2. Step 1: Recognize the Ethical Dilemma
I was working at Lonestar Steakhouse & Saloon as a host a
few years ago when I noticed a server was leaving the
restaurant with twice the amount of tips as everyone else. It
was then I noticed that she was changing the amount of the
tip that each customer left her on their credit card.
3. Step 2: Get the Facts
After observing my coworker for a few days to make sure she
was forging the tip amount, I learned that I was correct. I saw
her adding a one in front of every tip she was given on a
credit card. This gave her at least ten dollars more on each
tip.
4. Step 3: Identify Your Options
I realized I had two options.
1. I could tell my manager about what I saw.
2. I could not say anything and let her keep changing tip amounts.
5. Step 4: Test Each Option
If I were to tell my manager, I would be doing the right thing. I
would be protecting the customer and the restaurant from
legal impacts.
If I were to not tell my manager I would be doing the wrong
thing. I would be allowing a coworker to break the law, and
steal from customers.
6. Step 5: Decide Which Option to Follow
After reviewing my options, it was very clear which one I
needed to follow. I needed to tell my manager what I saw.
7. Step 6: Double-check with the spotlight
questions
I asked myself “How will I feel if my family finds out about my
decision?”
- I would feel proud for doing the right thing.
I asked myself “How will I feel about this if my decision is
reported in the local newspaper or posted on the Internet?”
- I would be happy to be recognized for doing the right thing.
8. Step 7: Take Action
After double-checking that I was doing the right thing, I went
to my manager and told him what I had seen. My manager
then went through her credit card receipts and found the
proof needed to confront her about the issue.
