With 236 years of age, Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ) is one of the oldest still published newspapers in the world. However, despite its age, NZZ is far from being old-fashioned. Especially when it comes to data-driven decision making and data-driven innovation, NZZ has been investing a lot within the last three years. For wrangling large amounts of data we have been using Apache Spark for almost a year now – and do not regret this choice. It had not only given us flexibility with ad-hoc analytics, but also drives our data-products (in production). In this talk I will share some of our use cases as well as insights we gained over the last year with Apache Spark. I will especially talk about how we calculate article recommendations and showcase some new exciting data products which are currently in active development.

Similar to Linking authorities through Wikidata

Wikidata has been created in order to support all of the roughly 300 Wikipedia projects. Besides interlinking all Wikipedia pages about a specific item – e.g., a person - in different languages, it also connects to more than 1900 different sources of authority information. We will present lessons learned from using Wikidata as a linking hub for two personal name authorities in economics (GND and RePEc author identifiers) and demonstrate the benefits of moving a mapping from a closed environment to Wikidata as a public and community-curated linking hub. We will further ask to what extent these experiences can be transferred to knowledge organization systems and how the limitation to simple 1:1 relationships (as for authorities) can be overcome. Using STW Thesaurus for Economics as an example, we will investigate how we can make use of existing cross-concordances to "seed" Wik-idata with external identifiers, and how transitive mappings to yet un-mapped vocabularies can be earned.

Slideset of the keynote talk given by Christian Bizer at the Language Data and Knowledge (LDK 2019) conference in Leipzig, Germany Abstract of the talk: Millions of websites have started to annotate data describing products, local business, events, jobs, places, recipes, and reviews within their HTML pages using the schema.org vocabulary. These annotations are widely used by search engines to render rich snippets within search results. Surprisingly, the annotations are hardly used by the research community. In the talk, Christian Bizer investigates the potential of schema.org annotations for being used as training data for tasks such as entity matching, information extraction, and sentiment analysis. Web pages that offer semantic annotations often also contain additional structured data in the form of HTML tables. In the second part of the talk, Christian Bizer discusses the interplay of semantic annotations and web tables for information extraction as well as the general potential of relational HTML tables for complementing knowledge bases such as DBpedia, focusing on the discovery of formerly unknown long tail entities as well as the extraction of n-ary relations. The amount of structured data that is published on the Web has increased sharply over the last years. The deluge of available data calls for new search techniques which support users in finding and integrating data from large numbers of data sources. In his talk, Christian Bizer will give an overview of the different types of data search that have been proposed so far: Entity search, table search, constraint and unconstraint search joins. As an example of a system from the last category, he will introduce the Mannheim Search Join Engine which provides for executing unconstraint search joins over different types of Web data including Linked Data, Microdata, Web tables and Wikipedia tables.

While basic Web analytics tools are widespread and provide statistics about website navigation, no approaches exist for merging such statistics with information about the Web application structure, content and semantics. Current analytics tools only analyze the user interaction at page level in terms of page views, entry and landing page, page views per visit, and so on. We show the advantages of combining Web application models with runtime navigation logs, at the purpose of deepening the understanding of users behaviour. We propose a model-driven approach that combines user interaction modeling (based on the IFML standard), full code generation of the designed application, user tracking at runtime through logging of runtime component execution and user activities, integration with page content details, generation of integrated schema-less data streams, and application of large-scale analytics and visualization tools for big data, by applying both traditional data visualization techniques and direct representation of statistics on visual models of the Web application.

Building web applications that can stand the test of time has always been tough. Web technology in particular is a rapidly changing landscape with new fads emerging frequently, that often leaves us with a outdated and unused application that needs to be rewritten at considerable effort and cost. With a common component based approach we can change this costly cycle of rebuilding every few years, by leveraging existing frameworks and web technologies that will allow us to create interchangeable Web Components that work in any environment. Although Web Components do pretty much what can be done with custom HTML, CSS and JavaScript, the distinct difference is it can be re-used more easily. In combination with a chosen technical framework, if done right, can provide the front-end to a component based architecture that allows to pick and choose the parts that we want to build our web application with, therefore reducing ongoing costs and effort, and increasing reusability, shareability, and quicker time to market to address users needs. This presentation will talk about the building blocks that will help to realise this reusable front-end vision including: standards (SDMX, CSPA); technologies; and Collaboration, through a community based approach to software development.

ELAG 2017 Abstract: Authority files and identifiers are used by libraries to consistently refer to entities such as subjects and authors. This principle of referencing “things, not strings” is also applied successfully in Linked Open Data and knowledge bases. The open knowledge base Wikidata connects Wikipedia articles in any language and provides background information on article’s subject such images and affiliations. In addition to internal references Wikidata contains identifiers from more than thousand authority files: well known library identifiers such as VIAF and GND, researcher IDs such as ORCID and Google Scholar, and identifiers for many more items such as TED speakers and Find A Grave. Wikidata thus emerges as a giant curated linking hub based on authority identifiers. In contrast to closed authority files that often impose tedious procedures, Wikidata can be enhanced and corrected by anybody, just like Wikipedia. The management of links between authority files in Wikidata is particularly suitable for automation: mappings extracted from Wikidata can be used in other systems and mapping data is already available in libraries ready to be added to Wikidata. This presentation will illustrate the use of Wikidata as authority linking hub with a case study considering links between author identifiers from RePEc (Research Papers in Economics) and GND. Workflows include both automatic and semi-automatic mapping approaches. We will address both technical solutions and organizational policies ruling the operation of Wikidata bots for automated updates. The tools presented in this talk include “wdmapper” command line application for extracting and complementing mappings from Wikidata with external mapping files and the “Mix’n’Match” to support crowdsourced mapping of authority files to Wikidata. "What's new?" and "What has changed" are questions users of Knowledge Organization Systems (KOS), such as thesauri or classifications, ask when a new version is published. Much more so, when a thesaurus existing since the 1990s has been completely revised, subject area for subject area. After five intermediately published versions in as many consecutive years, STW Thesaurus for Economics has been re-launched recently in version 9.0. In total, 777 descriptors have been added; more than a thousand (of about 6,000) have been deprecated, in their vast majority merged into others. More subtle changes include modified preferred labels, or merges and splits of existing concepts. We here describe how these changes were tracked, making use of the published SKOS (Miles & Bechhofer, 2009) files of the versions, loading them into named graphs of a SPARQL endpoint and executing queries on them. An ontology supporting version and delta description and query formulation is introduced. High-level visualizations of aggregated change data and drill-downs to the actual concepts are presented. We finish with an outlook to the skos-history project, which generalizes and extends the methodology to different knowledge organization systems.

SWIB14 presentation Over time, Knowledge Organization Systems such as thesauri and classifications undergo lots of changes, as the knowledge domains evolve. Most SKOS publishers therefore put a version tag on their vocabularies. With the vocabularies interwoven in the open web of data, however, different versions may be the base for references in other datasets. So, updates by "third parties" are required, in indexing data as well as in mappings from or to other vocabularies. Yet answers to simple user questions such as "What's new?" or "What has changed?" are not easily obtainable. Best practices and shared standards for communicating changes precisely and making them (machine-) actionable still have to emerge. STW Thesaurus for Economics currently is subject to a series of major revisions. In a case study we review the amount and the types of changes in this process, and demonstrate how versioning in general and difficult types of changes such as the abandonment of descriptors in particular are handled. Furthermore, a method to get a tight grip on the changes, based on SPARQL queries over named graphs, is presented. And finally, the skos-history activity is introduced, which aims at the development of an ontology/application profile and best practices to describe SKOS versions and changes.

Publishing Linked Open Data in a user-appealing way is still a challenge: Generic solutions to convert arbitrary RDF structures to HTML out-of-the-box are available, but leave users perplexed. Custom-built web applications to enrich web pages with semantic tags "under the hood" require high efforts in programming. Given this dilemma, content management systems (CMS) could be a natural enhancement point for data on the web. In the case of Drupal, one of the most popular CMS nowadays, Semantic Web enrichment is provided as part of the CMS core. In a simple declarative approach, classes and properties from arbitrary vocabularies can be added to Drupal content types and fields, and are turned into Linked Data on the web pages automagically. The embedded RDFa marked-up data can be easily extracted by other applications. This makes the pages part of the emerging Web of Data, and in the same course helps discoverability with the major search engines. In the workshop, you will learn how to make use of the built-in Drupal 7 features to produce RDFa enriched pages. You will build new content types, add custom fields and enhance them with RDF markup from mixed vocabularies. The gory details of providing LOD-compatible "cool" URIs will not be skipped, and current limitations of RDF support in Drupal will be explained. Exposing the data in a REST-ful application programming interface or as a SPARQL endpoint are additional options provided by Drupal modules. The workshop will also introduce modules such as Web Taxonomy, which allows linking to thesauri or authority files on the web via simple JSON-based autocomplete lookup. Finally, we will touch the upcoming Drupal 8 version. (Workshop announcement)
