Logical appeals – using reasons or evidence to support an opinion; consists of an opinion statement that is supported by reasons and evidence opinion statement – also known as the thesis statement of a persuasive essay, states the issue and the writer’s opinion on the issue Example: Thirty-five years later, as a parent of a ten-year-old, I still think uniforms would improve the quality of life for students. reason – answers the question why about an opinion statement. Why does the writer feel that school uniforms would improve the quality of life for the students? Example: Uniforms generally cost less than do most clothes that students want to wear. evidence – provide important support for a reason Example: For instance, the yearly cost of uniforms in Long Beach, California, is $70 to $90 for a set of three. There are four types of evidence writers typically use: Facts – a statement that can be proven true Statistics – a fact in number form Anecdotes & Examples – a brief story or a specific instance that illustrates a general idea Expert Opinion – the opinion of an authority on the subject
