Cano Cristales - The Spectacular Colorful River of Colombia
1. Cano Cristales - The Spectacular Colorful River of Colombia
There may be many rivers in the world that are claimed to be the most beautiful. But if
there’s one that has solid reasons to hold this prestigious title, it has to be the Caño
Cristales of Colombia. Also known as the “River of Five Colorsâ€Â, Caño Cristales
rightfully deserves this description as the river reflects incredible vivid colors like deep green, blue
red, dark orange, at certain times of the year. Witnessing how this river bursts with bright colors as
the sun touches its clear waters is indeed a feast for the eyes, and is worth the travel.
Caño Cristales’ vibrant colors do not appear all year round. They occur during summer,
between the wet and dry season, and when conditions like water level and temperature are just
right. The creatures responsible for the colors are actually a distinct species of plant named
Macarenia clavigera. These plants grow on the river floor and exude a brilliant red color. Because
they interact with the blue water, the yellow/green sand and other natural hues, the result is a
unique multi-colored river.
This famous Columbian river lies in the Serrania de la Macarena region of the Meta province. With a
length of about 100 kilometers and a width of 20 meters, Caño Cristales flows into the
Guayabero River. If you want to see this beautiful phenomenon, plan your visit from June to mid -
December. You can also consult a reputable tour company operating in the area as they can also
advise you about the best dates to visit.
Caño Cristales is not as accessible as other rivers. Most tourist usually begin their journey to
the river in Bogota. From here, you can travel by bus to Villavicencio, which is the capital of the
Meta province. Once here, you need to fly on a chartered plane to the small town of La Macarena.
This one-hour flight is considered very scenic as you will go across the vast Llanos plains connected
to the tributaries of the Amazon River.
Then you have to make your way into the national park and hike through the thick jungle, following
unmarked trails. But the trekking part makes the experience more challenging and satisfying. But
since most tourists do not know their way around, it’s much better to hire a guide to avoid
getting lost and other inconveniences. When hiking to Caño Cristales, don’t forget to
wear suitable clothing and bring plenty of liquids. Light layered clothes are usually needed during
the day, but warmer clothes are necessary at night. It is also handy to bring waterproof coat just in
case it rains.
The National Park is home to a very diverse array of flora and fauna. A number of them are endemic.
The experience of walking around or through the river is a memorable experience. While here, try to
count the colors you see. Some travelers claimed that they saw more than 5 colors at one time. Aside
from the colors, you will also be impressed with the fascinating rock formations, waterfalls and
natural pools in the area. Surely the beauty of Caño Cristales will not fail to enchant you! You
may swim and relax in the natural pools under the waterfalls, but not after capturing the beauty of
the river on camera.
