Over a two year period of using a Moodle based self-access resource, student logins were measured against student numbers in schools in order to evaluate the percentage of students’ usage. Peaks in student use seemed to correspond with teacher training initiatives. This paper outlines these initiatives and the relationship between student use of self-access ICT resources and teacher training. It also details the types of training and incentives offered to both teachers and students to improve the usage figures of self-access.

Craver’s Historical Overview of the Changing Instructional Role of the High School SLMS, 1950–1986 Craver’s (1986) overview of the evolving instructional SLMS roledemonstrates the gradual change in attitudes and practices taking place between the socially complacent 1950s and the disillusioned 1980s when societal problems affecting students seemed overwhelming and unsolvable. With the launching of Sputnik in the early 1950s, anti-intellectualism in America quickly gave way to concentrated efforts directed toward high educational achievement. During this decade, as educators noticed that children appeared to have individual learning styles, they came to realize that multiple information sources could nourish each of their unique intellects. This made the library a natural focal point in the school and contributed to two gradually evolving librarian roles: assistance with curriculum development (albeit limited) and initiation of course-integrated library instruction. With increasing use of course-integrated audiovisual materials during this decade and the decline of the library as study hall, the more passive librarian role of housing and providing materials slowly transformed into an active instructional role. This gradual transformation was recognized by the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) in their 1956 official statement acknowledging that librarians were becoming “coordinators, consultants and supervisors of instructional materials on each level of school administration” (Gates 1968, 235, as cited in Craver 1986). In the turbulent 1960s, as school curriculum expanded to include such diverse new subject areas as communication, fine arts, and the humanities, students spent more time in school than previous generations had, and instructional methods became increasingly varied and creative. At the same time, federal funding became available for the development of schools, libraries, and the purchase of diverse library materials. As these education reform initiatives evolved, so did the instructional role of the school librarian, who was described as a “team teacher, learning expediter and media programming educator” (Davies 1963, 158, as cited in Craver 1986). In the latter part of the decade, research into the role of the school librarian was carried out through the School Library Manpower Project. Its publication, Occupational Definitions for School Library Media Personnel showed that overall the scope and nature of the job was evolving into “an active teaching role in the instructional program of the school through instruction in the effective use of media and equipment” (School Library Manpower Project 1971, 10, as cited in Craver 1986). The early seventies saw further educational change as the system moved from students passively receiving teacher-delivered material toward projects and activities that engaged students in their own learning more than did lectures and tests. But by the latter part of the decade, as national .

INFORMATION LITERACY AND THE PUBLIC LIBRARY Jane Harding Information Services/Special Projects Librarian Sunshine Coast Libraries Queensland There is a lack of literature about information literacy and the public library, especially compared with that of school and academic libraries. This might suggest that public libraries are not engaged in information literacy efforts. However the literature reveals that, despite myriad challenges, public libraries worldwide are embracing the responsibility and have implemented a wide array of information literacy approaches. They are furthering information literacy in their communities, albeit along a poorly defined and obstacle strewn path. Edited version of a paper first published in the 'Australian library journal ' August 2008. It is over 30 years since the term'information literacy' was coined by PaulZurkowski' and nearly 20 years since the concept came to the forefront of the library and information profession. Libraries of all types have been charged with taking an active role in fostering an information literate society. Public libraries have been proposed as the obvious and well equipped agencies for imparting critical information skills to the wider community. A myriad of how to guides, reports, studies and national goals and objectives provide a framework for information literacy programs in school and academic libraries. By contrast, there is very little published literature about the efforts of public libraries. Nonetheless public libraries are embracing this responsibility. There is evidence of a wide range of information literacy focused programs in public libraries worldwide. Although these programs vary in format and content, most libraries have approached information literacy skills development in similar ways and appear to have found a balance between the expectations placed on them by various government and information industry bodies, user demands, and available resources. It is also clear that the scope of programs is being limited by a range of factors, some of which are the very characteristics originally identified as a strength of public library involvement in information literacy development. Information literacy and tbe public library: an overview Information literacy is widely considered to be a survival requirement for life in the informa- tion age, a vital underpinning to lifelong learn- ing, and critical for a thriving democ- racy.^"''"'*'̂ '*'̂ '̂ '''"''"''̂ ''''''''''̂ Many definitions of information literacy have been proposed and debated in the 30 years since the term was proposed, most of which reflect attributes similar to the following commonly cited definition ...to be information literate, a person must be able to recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information.'* Information literacy has been identified as an issue of importance to all society.'^ Public libraries are regarded as id.

This overview of information literacy (IL) and information literacy instruction (ILI) focuses on the terminology used in advocating for and discussion of IL practices in public libraries. Although the focus of the proposal is on public libraries, the practices reviewed also look to academic and school libraries for understanding of how IL and ILI are currently perceived and delivered. This study also considers the unique situation of public libraries in regards to the terminology that has been appropriated by academic institutions, as well as the role of public librarians themselves in providing ILI.

483 Salika A. Lawrence | Kelly McNeal | Melda N. YildizBy using popular culture, teachers can help students engage in a variety of multimedia projects that help them make connections between reading, writing, and technology. Summer Program Helps Adolescents Merge Technology, Popular Culture, Reading, and Writing for Academic Purposes Research has documented that adolescents engage in many literacy prac- tices outside of school (Cutler, 1999; Fisher, 2003; Hinchman, Alvermann, Boyd, Brozo, & Vacca, 2003/2004; Mahiri & Sablo, 1996; Moje, 2000), where they have the choice and freedom to make their own decisions with few restrictions and opportunities to interact with a wide array of texts in different forms. Recent reports suggest that today’s adolescents have “mul- tiple literacies” (King & O’Brien, 2002) because they interact with multiple forms of nontraditional texts and different sources of information, access popular culture and mass media, and communicate with people from diverse backgrounds and perspectives through the use of new technologies (Moore, Bean, Birdyshaw, & Rycik, 1999). Adolescents’ current reliance on technol- ogy prompts a redefinition of literacy that represents a generation of youths who read less print-based text (Collier, 2007) and rely instead on visual im- ages as a means of comprehending text while sorting through a plethora of digital information, technology, and media. Although they now “read” more images, youths still need and use critical thinking skills such as exploring and critiquing the “text” when they shift through different sources of digital information. Previous research falls short of distinguishing between the technological literacy practices adolescents engage in outside of school, namely e-mailing and surfing the Web (Moore et al., 1999), and the academic and critical lit- eracy expectations identified in media and visual literacy standards, name- ly evaluating sources, synthesizing information, and using different media. These practices ref lect “21st-century literacies...[which] includes new ideas about what can be considered texts” (Collier, 2007, p. 4) and students’ interac- tions with those texts. Collier (2007) reported that students in our 21st-century context increas- ingly interact with nontraditional texts such as rap lyrics and graphic nov- els. In this context teachers have had to reexamine their classroom practices Journal of Adolescen t & Adul t L i teracy 5 2 (6) March 2 0 0 9 doi:10 .15 9 8 /JA A L . 5 2 . 6 . 3 © 2 0 0 9 In ternat ional Reading A ssociat ion (pp. 4 8 3 – 4 9 4) 484 J o u rn a l o f A d o le sc e n t & A d u lt L it e ra cy 5 2 (6 ) M a rc h 2 0 0 9 because of the increasing inf luence of technology on students’ literacy practices. The problem is that teachers...assume students already know all the “tech stuff,” and need only to have their writing and think- ing s.

This roundtable focused conversation on how the emerging information literacy framework (ACRL, 2015) impacts libraries in virtual schooling environments. Participants discussed K-12 and higher education students' development of information literacy as a series of threshold concepts and metaliteracies (Mackey & Jacobson, 2011, 2014; Townsend, Brunetti, & Hofer, 2011). Participants also examined what the evolving information literacy framework means for virtual schools, libraries, teachers and librarians. Hodges, A. & Ochoa, M. (2015). Marks (Eds.), Proceedings of Society for Information Technology & Teacher Education International Conference 2015 (p. 2168).
