DEPRIVATION OF FOOD
~ INDIA
Citizenship Badge - Stage 2
Shortage of food or hunger is also known as famine. Famine is a widespread
scarcity of food, caused by several factors including crop failure, population
unbalance, or government policies. This phenomenon is usually accompanied or
followed by regional malnutrition, starvation, epidemic, and increased mortality.
Nearly every continent in the world has experienced a period of famine
throughout history.
Introduction to Hunger
Causes of Famine in India
-Population
Increase in population is a reason that India has a shortage of food. India is the second
populated state with more than billion living in it. It is projected that the population will
increase to 1.3 billion in 2020. To feed the large population we require millions of tons
of food grain. It is estimated that India would require 343.0 million metric tons of food
grains in 2020 to feed the whole population. The prices of important commodities are
rising. Two-digit inflation rate has affected agriculture. Prices of commodities such as
fertilizers and others used in agriculture have considerably gone up. So income from
agriculture has been reduced and farmers are forced to leave agriculture.
Causes of Famine in India
-Population
This in turn causes less rice to be produced in order to meet the demands of the
estimated food needed for India. To increase food production, area under agriculture
should be increased. But rather than increasing, agricultural land is now being
converted into industrial land. The recent example is of Singur, where thousand acre of
agricultural land is converted into a car factory. Urbanization is another problem.
Agricultural lands are now being converted into housing plots and are converted into
cities and towns. This has increased the pressure on agriculture, causing lesser food
production which results in hunger .
Causes of Famine in India
-Monsoons and Droughts
Drought is a major concern for India as it occurs almost every two-three years and
affects the development of the nation. It occurs due to a late arrival, early withdrawal
or failure of monsoon. Since India is a largely agricultural country, the monsoon could
mean a blessing or a disaster for the people of India. The country is adversely affected
by the paucity of showers almost every alternative year, plunging the vast number of
agriculturists into survival crisis and slowing down or completely halting the growth of
other sectors. Drought years, resulting in food shortage and famine, not only point at
the human cost but, in some years, a political and economic cost as well.
Causes of Famine in India
-Monsoons and Droughts (Example)
Some of India’s worst droughts include:
Great Famine: It is also known as the Madras famine, and is caused by the drought of
1876-1878. The famine has affected many regions of southern India, and has affected
up to 58,500,000 people. Over five million people perished due to the famine. This
drought was compounded by measures taken by the British to cut wages for relief
workers. This resulted in spending less than it did a year earlier during the Bihar famine
Efforts To Aid India
Adventist Development and Relief Agency
ADRA is bringing aid to Assam State, India, where
nearly 1 million people have been affected by flooding.
Heavy monsoon rains put 360,000 people out of their
homes and destroyed crops and farmland . ADRA is helping 25,000 people recover by
distributing mosquito nets, securing clean water sources, delivering hygiene kits, and
through cash-for-work programs.
Efforts To Aid India
ACF International
Our Impact:
Action Against Hunger provides lifesaving assistance and
restores self-sufficiency to millions of people in over 40
countries. 550,000 small farmers provided with tools after
drought and displacement in 2012. 42,000 severely
malnourished children treated in D.R. Congo in 2012.
170,000 people gained access to clean water in Kenya in 2012.
