I4MS 2015: Enhancing digital transformation in manufacturing SMEs I4MS 2015 will explore the progress achieved by the I4MS initiative and the impact participation has had on SMEs. To date I4MS has achieved over 80% industrial participation. An initial participation of 80 SMEs has now grown to 150 as momentum continues to build. Success is also evident with SME participation in projects leading to the adaption of new technologies and approaches. I4MS phase two will take this success further through additional projects supported by a budget of approximately EUR 35 Mn. At I4MS 2015 participating SMEs will present their experiences, results achieved and impact made. They will explain how they have benefited and what the adaption of innovative ICT has meant for their business. European support does not just exist at EU level. Action at regional level supported through programmes such as Smart Specialisation present the good opportunity to reach out to and involve the diverse landscape of European SMEs. At I4MS 2015 participants will be introduced to a new activity designed for such outreach – digital innovation competence centres – and an outlook towards the next stage of I4MS. I4MS is a EUR 77 Mn initiative of the 'Factories of the Future' partnership designed to support the adaption of innovative ICT by SMEs. Through seven integrated projects in four key areas, I4MS brings manufacturing SMEs directly into research and innovation projects, introducing them to innovative technologies and supporting the adoption of such technologies.

The project APPOLO, currently active in the Seventh Framework programme, launches an Open Call for assessment experiments with new laser processing equipment for emerging manufacturing technologies based on ultra-short pulse (sub-ns). The about two year running experiments aim at validation of the technologies needed for large and global markets. The equipment should be tested for the selected technological process in close-to industrial environment using the assessment service of laser application laboratories around Europe joined to APPOLO HUB. Validation will be performed in close collaboration between equipment supplier, end-user and an application laboratory connected to the APPOLO HUB. The new laser assessment experiments should provide business relevant technical investigations and demonstrate applicability of the new equipment for industrial applications.

The story on the redesign of our wish list at uncommongoods. It's a story of a half-broken legacy product, the surprising discovery of a loyal group of users, and a round of customer phone calls that led to an impactful redesign.

Professional credentials are shifting from paper to digital representations, but issues of security, validity, portability and cost – along with simplicity – are forefront among credential issuers considering the transition. Mozilla Foundation’s new Open Badge Infrastructure is one vendor-neutral option for digital credential display, storage and sharing. This ePoster (created for the November 2013 ICE Exchange conference held by the Institute for Credentialing Excellence) explains how traditional paper credential issuance can move to a digital credential approach using open web standards and technologies, and the potential benefits to credential issuers, credential earners and employers. Authors are Frank Catalano and Kenneth J. Doucet of Professional Examination Service, a not-for-profit professional credential assessment and services organization (@ProExam or www.ProExam.org).

If you’re a marketer it’s very likely that you’ve run an A/B test. It’s also likely that you’ve never calculated the sample size for your tests, and instead, you run tests until they reach statistical significance. If this is the case, your strategy is statistically flawed. Conforming to sample size requires marketers to wait longer for test results, but choosing to ignore it will bear false positives and lead to bad decisions. This deck was created for an email audience for there are valuable lessons for anyone who runs A/B tests.
