ThErE arE Four ChoiCEs:
1. Become newly certified by taking the course and then passing
the exam; Or
2. Renew your Composting Programs SWANA Certification by
re-taking the exam.
Note that you must pay the exam fee plus the recertification fee.
Please submit the recertification fee to SWANA National with your
completed recertification application, which can be found at
www.sWaNa.org or through contacting SWANA’s Certification
Coordinator at cert@swana.org ; Or
3. Attend and obtain knowledge of composting systems design and
operations (without taking the exam) and earn CEU’s:
a. 30 for Composting Certification
b. 15 for Recycling Systems
c. 10 for Collection Systems, Construction & Demolition,
MOLO, MSW Systems Management, or Transfer Stations; Or
4. Register for the certification exam only. (One does not have to
take the course in order to be certified.)

This prep course is for the Composting Certification exam, issued jointly by SWANA and
the U.S. Composting Council (USCC); professionals who manage or would like to manage
composting programs will be exposed to the various opportunities for composting
agricultural and industrial waste. This course will enable you to turn your program into a
successful and cost-effective operation by gaining an understanding in both the composting
of materials and the full range of technologies involved in planning, designing and operating
composting systems.
CoursE CoNTENT: This 3-day course consists of presentation by David Hill, the Programs
instructor; classroom exercises, case studies, and a possible half-day tour and field exercise.
Please bring a calculator capable of handling seven digits for class activities.
CErTiFiCaTioN: Certification candidates need to register and apply to sit for SWANA’s
Certification Exam, which is a three-hour exam. You need to register specifically for the
exam if you wish to take it in order to become certified.
Certified Composting systems manager QualifiCations
• High School Diploma or GED; and
• Minimum of 5 years experience in Integrated Municipal Solid Waste
Management (4 year degree in a related field may be substituted for up to
2 years); and
• Minimum of 2 years experience in management/supervisory position directly
responsible for daily operations, compliance with design and permit conditions,
utilization of field equipment and services, personnel needs, utilization and
retention, responses to regulatory agencies and budgeting; and
• Receive a passing grade on the examination.
teChniCal assoCiate QualifiCation for Composting systems
• High School Diploma or GED; and
• Involved in the planning, design, implementation, operation or promotion in
the MSW field, but do not fit into the above category, e.g., consultants, planners,
vendors, regulators, etc.; and
• Receive a passing grade on the examination.
inspeCtor QualifiCations for the Composting disCipline
• High School Diploma or GED; and
• Minimum of 5 years experience in IMSWM; and
• Minimum of 2 years experience as an inspector of MSW landfills, e.g., can issue
official citations for violations which require action and currently in that position;
and
• Receive a passing grade on the examination.

David M. Hill resume
Since 2007, David Hill has been the principal in CycleLogic Environmental Marketing and Consultation where
he works with companies that generate, process, use, purchase or sell recyclable materials, primarily focused
on the economic and ecological benefits inherent with the reuse of organic materials. His clients have includ-
ed Peninsula Composting Company; Montgomery County, MD; Baltimore City. From 1999-2007 he was the proj-
ect manager and marketing manager of the Baltimore City Compost Facility, an in-vessel biosolids facility. At
Maryland Environmental Service from 1993-1999, he managed and directed composting operations for several
Maryland counties for several years. For four years he was with Shemin Nurseries, a subsidiary of Weyerhaeuser
Diversified Products, as Department Manager and then Account Manager. From 1984-1988 he was owner/
general manager of Designer Gardens.
He is a member of SWANA (as a small consultant), the Water Environment Federation, American Marketing
Association, and active with the U.S. Composting Council. He has a B.S. in Horticulture and a M.S. Marketing,
both from the University of Maryland.
