3. Research
One strength was that I got to look at other products and see how they were made. This let me have a look at the sort of
styles people like to do when they are making skateboard products. Another strength would be that it allowed me to
have a look at all of the bad things they have done and then I can adapt on the mistakes. This is especially for the pre
1990 product that I needed to research as it allowed me to take a look at all of the bad things they have done and see
how they have changed from then. There was a few things that I saw in my research and adapted on such as in my web
site I saw that they have done the front page as a full picture. I didn’t think this was that good so I adapted on it and
made a smaller picture and then I still had the space to put in some products at the bottom.
Another strength would be that I got to ask my target audience about my product and what sort of things
they would like to see. This helped a lot because it helped me choose which type of merchandise I want to design. It also
gave me a lot of answers that I potentially could have used.
Another strength would be the questionnaires. This gave me the chance to talk face to face to anyone from
my audience that wanted. It was good because I got to choose someone who was a skater. This helped because the
majority of my surveys were not skaters so you couldn’t really get any good answers from them.
Even though I used the pre 1990 product research for adapting ideas it didn’t really give me a lot that I
wouldn’t have already known. This is a weakness because I think that it was a waste of time and I could have been
looking at something that is more modern age.
Another weakness would be that in my survey people put down some silly, useless answers. I am pretty sure
that it was only the people who didn’t have any knowledge about skating because they didn’t know what to put down.
Another weakness would be that in my interview I only get to ask a small amount of people who could have
had one view about something, but the majority of the audience could have thought another thing was the better
option.
To better I would have looked at a logo because I turned out that my logo was a big part of my product because of my
questionnaire. This would have helped a lot because I would have known what type of styles other logos used could have
potentially had a better logo to put on my products, to make better products..
4. Planning
What were the strengths of your planning?
– One strength was that I had the chance to look at what style I wanted my product to
have. I did this by looking at what fonts/colours I want to have in my product. This
helped a lot because I got to imagine in my head how it was going to look. I then made a
layout of my products to see how the layout will be. This helped a lot as because I could
imagine more and more how my product was going to look. It also gave me a second
chance I away because if I didn’t like how it came I could have easily changed it.
– Another strength was that I got to think about health and safety and other problems.
This was really helpful as I got to find a solution of a potential problem before it actually
happened so it does not happen whilst I am doing my final product and it wastes my
time. I did have a problem where my computer shut down but I saved it because of the
planning before hand.
What were the weaknesses of your planning?
– One weakness was the soft ware and resources. I think that this was a waste of time as I
could have been actually on the software or using the resources without thinking about
it anyway. I did not use it one bit in my products creation as there was literally no need.
For me to have done better I could have done a design on my merch in my planning. This would have
made my product so much better as I would have got to see if I liked it before I did it.
5. Time Management
• I think that I could have managed my time a bit better. For the
merchandise I had a lot of products to make so for the merchandise I
rushed it a little bit and it did not turn out how I would have hoped. My
products were in on time only because I rushed the merchandise. My
products would have definitely improved if I had more time. For the
merchandise I would have created more complex designs. I would have
done more colour ways as well. For the web site design I would have
added all of the pages and try and make a functional website design. It
would have worked a lot better as the web site would look more realistic.
For my logo design I would have made it more complex and made it
contrast with each other a lot more. I would have made it in an illusion
shape that was original as this would look pretty cool for a logo. For the
magazine I would have improved it by adding more pictures of people on
the front. I would have also done an inside article of a magazine. I could
have also done a back page of a magazine as well.
6. Technical Qualities
Both of the
products have
the skater in
front of the title.
This is to
exaggerate the
skate trick and
at the same
time to create
more room
My magazine
has a dark
style towards
it because the
photo is dark
and in the
night and I
am also using
red which is
associated
with danger.
Their magazine
is really bright
because they
have used a
bright image
and the skater
is wearing
yellow. The
title is also
yellow with is
associated
with
happiness.
We both have added the writing on
the left of the screen and made the
main words bigger. However theirs is
all one colour and font but mine is
two colours and different fonts
I have added a
promotion in my
magazine to interest
the audience.
I have got a sub
image for the
skater who's
name is under is
I named
the skater
in my
image
7. Aesthetic Qualities
I really like the top
part of my web site
design because it
looks so slick because
the black contrasts
with the white so
well. I have done it so
I didn’t add too much
black and over do it.
The top black part is really
well done because it makes
my product look more
professional and realistic.
The navigation bar, search
bar, login/signup, and the
basket is also really well
done. This is because they
are all the perfect distance
away from each other and
they are all the perfect size.
The icons next to the
sections make t look more
professional as they are in
the same kind of style. You
can also tell is it brings you
onto multiple pages or just
one as the drop down arrows
mean there is more than one
page and the icons mean it is
just one page (apart from
search bar).
The photo in the
middle is really
good as it clearly
advertises the new
collections and
that is the first
thing people will
see when they
click on.
The featured products look really
good but I think it would be better
if a said that they were featured
products. Also they black dot
would look better if they were a
tiny bit smaller
8. Audience Appeal
The skate board
would appeal to the
target audience as it
has a complex design
which was asked for
in my questionnaire.
Even the non-skaters
said that they would
like to see a complex
design.
In my questionnaire the
target audience said that
they would like to see
they logo on the
merchandise. Belongers
like to have the logos on
their products and stick
the same product so they
will to have a cool logo.
I have chosen a bright colour
as the target age range are
more interested in bright
colours. Also both genders
will like the colours as there
are a range of colours in the
skateboard.
I have done multiple colours as I think that
the audience would like that because if
they are wearing different colour trousers
they can still look good in each colour. The
white and the black t- shirts appeals to
both genders as they are both unisex
colours.
I have made a look book so the audience
can see all of the new products in one
place. This makes it appealing to my target
audience as 16 – 19 year olds like the most
simple way of viewing things.
10. Feedback 1
• What did you like about the product?
– The designs are clear and contrast well
– They clearly all link together
– The fonts work well with the genre
– The layouts look professional
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
– The colour scheme is quite limited
11. Feedback 2
• What did you like about the product?
– I liked the way the magazine was laid out as it
worked well with the image used. The stories on
the front were all related to the topic and the
overall design worked well.
– I liked the designs and they work well as a brand
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
– More diversity with products or style as they are
all quite similar.
12. Feedback 3
• What did you like about the product?
– Website looks real
– I think that the photos are of a good quality and
have been chosen well for each product.
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
– I don’t think this would attract females much
because of the themes and colour schemes.
Female merch or models would broaden the
audience for the product.
13. Peer Feedback Summary
• What do you agree with from your peer feedback?
– I agree that my products need more diversity and kind of look the same. This
is because all of my products have the same sort of colour scheme so they
look quite similar. If I was to switch up the colours all of my products would
look different.
– I agree that the magazine was laid out really well because I used my research
to find a professional product and used it as inspiration to my final product. .
– I agree that my web site looks real because I also used other professional
products from my research as inspiration to my final product and I made it
look better.
• What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?
– I disagree that my product doesn’t attract females because the female gender
was not my primary audience, it was my secondary audience. There is nothing
in my work that excludes females. My t-shirts just the normal unisex colours,
black and white, so they attract both audience‘s
14. Peer Feedback Summary
One thing I would do is widen the colour scheme a lot more. Even if it attracts
females as well it would be good, I would do this by adding brighter colours and
having more of a happy mood in my products.
I would also use colours that are associated with different genders/types of
audience. I would use colours such as pink, green, purple and some more yellow.
However I would not remove the other colours as the majority of skaters are male.
I would just show the females that there are still products for them.
Another thing I would do is make more products that are different. I would do this
by adding more merchandise such as hats, socks, hoodies and to have a more
complex designs on them.
I would also make a more complex look book that has pages on each product with
writing about the merchandise. I would have people modelling in the look book
and just have pictures of the product. I would section it out with cool diagonal
lines.
