Over the next 6 weeks you will complete the A2 Media Studies Induction Project. In small groups you will research, plan, film, edit, and present a moving image product which represents young people. The project will allow you to develop the practical skills needed at A2, and introduce you to the key concepts for the examined topics.
Purpose By the time you complete the induction project you will have developed key skills essential to A2 Media Studies. You will be familiar with key concepts and debates needed to succeed in A2 Media Studies.
Skills and Knowledge Moving image research and planning Moving image production and post-production Media issues and debates Media Theories Media and Collective Identity – Media Representations of Youth
Week 1 – Introduction to Key Concepts Media Representations of Youth Media Theories and Concepts Week 2 – Research Analysing similar products Identifying conventions Applying theory Week 3 – Planning Scripting, storyboarding Production management Week 4 – Filming Week Week 5 – Post-production Week 6 – Presenting your Product
Analysing the Representation of Youth Whilst you watch the film analyse how the young characters are represented. You should think about: The messages communicated about young people The ideas associated with being young Whether you think the characters are stereotypical or unstereotypical Whether you think the representations of teenagers are positive or negative The effect of technical aspects on representation (camerawork, sound, editing, mise-en-scene) Think about the differences in the way teenagers and adults are represented in the film, especially in relation to the effect of technical aspects. What effect does this have?
Concepts to Apply Representation – identify examples of signifiers used to construct meaning. Audience – how do the filmmakers want the audience to respond? What do they do to encourage that response? Narrative – what conflicts are there in the film? Genre – what genre or genres does the film relate to? Do you think the film follows conventions o not? Subcultures – how is the youth subculture represented? What is its relationship to adult society?
