An effective learning experience today is really a continuum from the more formal, in-classroom learning, to the more informal methods. Students are expecting more from their education experience these days. They no longer want to be a passive participant in their learning. Nor do they want to be boxed into a specific style of instruction – one where interaction is one-way, from teacher to student – and that occurs at a pre-determined place and time.Today’s students want to be active participants in their learning and have more access to informal learning opportunities. They expect immediacy through mobile devices, a personalized education experience tailored to their needs – including access to class materials when and how they want it - and Facebook-level connection with their learning – such as instant messaging and instant content sharing. An active learning experience combines informal learning opportunities with formal instruction AND it provides this anywhere, anytime. We believe this is how to take students to the next level of engagement and achievement. And to effectively serve that active learning, you need the foundational support of the right educational technology mix.
[CLICK] It starts with the traditional LMS, which provides the asynchronous learning tools that all students and professors have come to expect. But the active learner expects more than an LMS these days. A holistic learning experience provides students and faculty with more ways to communicate and interact with one another – [CLICK] from the informal, unstructured interactions that occur ad-hoc with, for example, IM and instant content sharing [CLICK]to the more formal, structured instructor-led events that happen over virtual or physical classrooms. And in a truly active environment, [CLICK] students must have the flexibility of accessing their learning wherever they are – in the classroom, in their home, or on-the-go via their mobile devices. This combination of Blackboard Learn, Collaborate and Mobile enables institutions to provide a complete, more cohesive learning experience using robust education technology that helps address the challenges you are facing in delivering a social learning experience [CLICK] , improving student outcomes [CLICK] and staying relevant for today’s active consumer [CLICK].
It’s all about engaging the student, right? But how do we keep them engaged in the learning experience when they walk out of the classroom? How do we keep them connected with other students, instructors and their coursework? One crucial factor for successful engagement is that they can access these channels of communication easily. Anytime. Anywhere. And on their preferred device.Another important factor is the human element incorporating live engagement - especially in an online learning environment. Collaborative technology helps humanize the learning experience among students and faculty with capabilities such as mobile web conferencing, instant messaging and voice discussion boards. And then of course there is the content itself. Today’s students are accustomed to high quality, visually engaging content. Blackboard provides rich content that includes access to YouTube, SlideShare, Flickr and more … from directly within their learning environment. Not to mention the digital content that they can integrate into their classes via Blackboard content partners.
But the Education Network is different from one’s personal, social network. Students have told us they want their Education Network to be separate – focusing on their academic life. Blackboard brings social and informal tools within the learning environment. Instructors and students can post to discussion boards - anywhere, anytime –in traditional or voice format. And they can instantly set up meetings, have impromptu conversations and share content ad-hoc. Online collaboration spaces facilitate online communities where study groups, clubs and the like can interact in the same place where their coursework resides. This integrated environment blends a student’s informal and their classroom learning to provide a better experience, increasing their overall satisfaction and ultimately improving their chances for success.
And the most important part of this kind of investment is that it ensures that you continue to stay relevant in a changing landscape where your consumer, the student, has increasingly changing expectations. In an environment where 60% of students say schools don’t meet their technology expectations and 78% want greater flexibility, it’s imperative that schools respond in order to attract and retain their students. And we only see this increasing as over 10 million students over the next 4 years are expected to move from a campus-only learning environment to taking at least one class online. That’s a major shift and we need to be ready to support it.
An effective learning program requires more than just a framework for putting courses online. Successful programs require a complete technology toolkit. Blackboard Learn delivers a highly accessible, streamlined learning platform. By extending learning experiences beyond the classroom, Institutions can provide more engaging and effective learning. Social learning tools keep students working together and learning from each other, becoming more active participants in their learning. A central content management repository enables institutions to share, store, manage and update content across courses, organizations or institutions. And Blackboard Learn provides capabilities to measure learning outcomes more efficiently and turn learning data into actionable information - improving learning outcomes and enabling you to showcase your success. And we know that your institution does not want to be forced into a specific technology. That’s why Blackboard Learn provides flexibility to choose your learning tools. Our commitment to open technology and an open database even further extend the learning experience and increase your technology investment. For example, there are many options to integrate content, regardless of publisher. And there is a library of hundreds of additional customizations and functionality available through the Blackboard Building Block add-ons. You can also choose to expand your functionality by using our open APIs to create additional extensions to Blackboard Learn on your own.
While the LMS has taken hold, a parallel development, fostered by emerging collaboration technologies, has emerged in the learning environment: live engagement, through which instructors and students interact with each other in real-time. Through these technologies, the human element is becoming part of online learning as well.Blackboard Collaborate makes the learning experience more personal and interactive. It enables institutions to create virtual classrooms, hold online office hours and faculty meetings, and encourages informal, peer-to-peer learning through spontaneous, instant connections. With Collaborate’s new voice authoring capability, instructors can provide a human personal touch even when interaction is not ‘live’. They can add voice instructions, commentary to course pages, and provide clearer verbal feedback on assignments, quizzes and exams. And educational institutions save on costly, unproductive travel for administration or faculty meetings on multi-site or dispersed campuses. They can expand their course catalog, tapping remote faculty to teach subjects for which there is limited demand or limited expertise available on campus, offering courses at one location but making them available to students at other locations as well, and increasing enrollment without adding to their physical campus. The integration between Blackboard Learn and Collaborate streamlines administration for a greater return on your technology investment. And mitigates risk with a single, proven vendor. It provides a seamless platform to blend asynchronous and synchronous content for more effective learning and better learning outcomes.
Blackboard Mobile Learn was designed with the belief that institutions can increase students’ interaction with courses by making them available on the devices they are glued to at all times, AND they can increase student engagement and retention by putting their course tools and materials into a really beautiful and interactive environment.Native applications are available for each of the major mobile platforms- iOS (both iPhone and iPad), Android, and BlackBerry. These apps provide an intuitive, user-friendly, engaging environment where students can interact with their courses and the most powerful Blackboard Learn features anytime and anywhere. But the goal of Mobile Learn is not to replicate or just extend Learn. You can truly do things from a mobile device that you can’t do from a laptop or desktop. There is a new category of devices and there are ways to engage your students and intersect with your LMS in ways that were never possible. It’s never going to be a standalone learning app but rather helps you address your teaching and learning goals in a new way. The integration between Blackboard Learn and Blackboard Mobile provides a lifestyle based on a personalized experience that each user wants to have. It has evolved from discretionary to necessity. It is no longer a nice to have, it’s a must have and in many cases it is becoming the standard way of accessing information, staying in touch and learning.
