- An effective learning experience today is really a continuum from the more formal, in-classroom learning, to the more informal methods. Students are expecting more from their education experience these days. They no longer want to be a passive participant in their learning. Nor do they want to be boxed into a specific style of instruction – one where interaction is one-way, from teacher to student – and that occurs at a pre-determined place and time.Today’s students want to be active participants in their learning and have more access to informal learning opportunities. They expect immediacy through mobile devices, a personalized education experience tailored to their needs – including access to class materials when and how they want it - and Facebook-level connection with their learning – such as instant messaging and instant content sharing. An active learning experience combines informal learning opportunities with formal instruction AND it provides this anywhere, anytime. We believe this is how to take students to the next level of engagement and achievement. And to effectively serve that active learning, you need the foundational support of the right educational technology mix.

- It’s all about engaging the student, right? But how do we keep them engaged in the learning experience when they walk out of the classroom? How do we keep them connected with other students, instructors and their coursework? One crucial factor for successful engagement is that they can access these channels of communication easily. Anytime. Anywhere. And on their preferred device.Another important factor is the human element incorporating live engagement - especially in an online learning environment. Not to mention the digital content that they can integrate into their classes via Blackboard content partners.
- But the Education Network is different from one’s personal, social network. Students have told us they want their Education Network to be separate – focusing on their academic life. Blackboard brings social and informal tools within the learning environment. Instructors and students can post to discussion boards - anywhere, anytime –in traditional or voice format. And they can instantly set up meetings, have impromptu conversations and share content ad-hoc. Online collaboration spaces facilitate online communities where study groups, clubs and the like can interact in the same place where their coursework resides. This integrated environment blends a student’s informal and their classroom learning to provide a better experience, increasing their overall satisfaction and ultimately improving their chances for success.
- And the most important part of this kind of investment is that it ensures that you continue to stay relevant in a changing landscape where your consumer, the student, has increasingly changing expectations. In an environment where 60% of students say schools don’t meet their technology expectations and 78% want greater flexibility, it’s imperative that schools respond in order to attract and retain their students. And we only see this increasing as over 10 million students over the next 4 years are expected to move from a campus-only learning environment to taking at least one class online. That’s a major shift and we need to be ready to support it.

- While the LMS has taken hold, a parallel development, fostered by emerging collaboration technologies, has emerged in the learning environment: live engagement, through which instructors and students interact with each other in real-time. Through these technologies, the human element is becoming part of online learning as well.Blackboard Collaborate makes the learning experience more personal and interactive. It enables institutions to create virtual classrooms, hold online office hours and faculty meetings, and encourages informal, peer-to-peer learning through spontaneous, instant connections.
