                           Dialogue Big 3

We are going to write a conversation between Clemenceau, David 
Lloyd George and Woodrow Wilson. These three important men 
who were in charge of the treaties after WW1, had different ideas 
about how to deal with Germany. Points of debate were, 
compensation for the war, what punishment did Germany had to 
receive, among others. Each one had different perspectives, Wilson 
was idealistic, Lloyd George was worried about the economy of 
Britain in first place and Clemenceau wanted to virtually destroy 
Germany, making her pay. It's important to highlight that the US 
was only involved for 2 years in the war and was not as damaged 
as Britain and France. The famous speech by Woodrow Wilson 
about the fourteen points, highlights his idealistic point of view and 
his softness as regards the punishment for Germany.  
 
 
Wilson​: David, Georges, good afternoon gentlemen. We are 
gathered here today, to discuss and hopefully agree on Germany’s 
punishment. I believe, that we have to focus on not being too harsh 
on Germany. It is important to consider the possible revenge if we 
take too serious measures. One day Germany will be ready to 
attack again, and it's our duty prevent another war as “The Great 
War”. 
 
David Lloyd George​: Good afternoon, I particularly think that your 
proposal is too soft. Germany deserves to be punished. She is the 
main responsible for starting the war. She somehow has to pay, as 
you said we have to prevent another war. For Britain it is important 
to trade with Germany like before the war, therefore the punishment 
for her should be harsh but not devastating. 
 
Clemenceau: Hello gentlemen, first of all I would like to say that 
French people have seen our country invaded by the Germans 
several times, not only in the ww1, but also in the Franco­Prussian 
war. I believe that Germany should return Alsace Lorraine to 
France, it belongs to us. In addition, it is essential for us that the 
Germans suffer, French territory has been the most damaged 
during the war. 
 
David Lloyd George:  I think Alsace Lorraine is a fair point, maybe 
the part of suffering is extremist. I think that Germany should lose 
her Navy and colonies. We can not forget about the horrors of the 
war, as Clemenceau said. Germany has to be punished but we 
have to be moderate, no one wants Germany to seek revenge.  
 
Wilson​: What punishments would you recommend?  
 
Clemenceau​: In my view, Germany must pay for all the horrors of 
the war. What she has done is unforgivable, the destruction of our 
land, the killing and injuring of our people. Millions of soldiers have 
fought and died, She deserves to pay. Germany has proved that 
she does not look for peace, only her personal interests. If we had 
lost, the punishment for us would be really harsh. She had no 
mercy for Russia with the treaty of Brest Litovsk.Germany must pay 
a very high amount of money, enough to rebuild every single 
building she has destroyed. Also she will have to downgrade her 
army to one thousand men. 
 
David Lloyd George​: I agree, but I must add that she will have to 
get rid of her navy, we have to make sure that the Germans are not 
going to be a possible future threat for us. In addition, Germany 
should not be allowed to have an overseas empire or have 
relationships with Austria. It is a threatening power. 
 
Wilson:​ I do not think that is the right choice, think gentleman, do 
we want another war? However, I do believe in self determination, I 
agree that the Germany’s overseas empire must be independent.  
 
Clemenceau​: I absolutely do not want another war but think, if we 
take them easily they will recover fast and possibly be a threat of a 
future war. We need to rebuild our economies and Germany must 
pay for all the damages. If not she will attack again and we will be 
weakened. 
 
David Lloyd George​: I think that we can use some of Wilson's 
ideas, not being too harsh to prevent a future war. But, it's important 
to weaken her military power, without it, a war cannot be fought. As 
Clemenceau said, she started the war, therefore she must pay for 
what she has caused. 
 
Wilson: Gentlemen, I am sorry to change the subject but for me it is 
very important to know your opinions about the 14 points. They are 
important to me, I do believe that the world can be a better place for 
all of us. 
 
Clemenceau: I am happy with some of the points, for example that 
Alsace Lorraine is returned to France, as I had already said. 
However, I do believe it is difficult to achieve them and the point 
about self determination is debatable. 
 
David Lloyd George: I also disagree with the point of self 
determination, Britain colonies are very important to our economy 
and a part of our country that we have earned. However, the point 
about trade is beneficial for all of us, thinking about the economy of 
our countries. 
 
Wilson: It is difficult for all of us to agree, but overall we all like 
some of the points. So, let's summarize what Germany must do: 
accept the guilt and therefore, pay for everything she has 
destroyed, downgrade her army to one thousand men, weaken her 
naval force and not be allowed to have military vehicles or aircraft. I 
want to add that we should create a League of Nations, the last 
point of my speech “the fourteen points”. This consists on making a 
world organization to guarantee peace between countries and 
prevent another catastrophe. Do you agree? 
 
Clemenceau​: I think the agreement is fair enough. Do not forget 
that she must accept the blame of starting the war and return 
Alsace Lorraine to the French. 
 
Lloyd George​: I agree too, especially as regard the cuts in 
Germany’s military. The colonies can be controlled by this league 
you, Wilson, previously mentioned. 
 
In our opinion we really liked doing it on a voicethread because it is 
more creative than just reading from a book, it is a new exciting
