Lesson 17 - The indefinitive article “A -
An”
El artículo indefinido significa “un - una” y se utiliza únicamente en singular.

A: se usa antes de un sonido consonante y An: se usa antes de un sonido vocal.

 1 El artículo indefinido se usa delante de nombres que indiquen oficio, religión,
   nacionalidad, profesión y rango.

    ●   David is an artis and your father is a butcher
        David es un artista y su padre es un carnicero
    ●   John is a protestant, but Camilo is a catholic
        John es un protestante, pero Camilo es un católico
    ●   Alex is a cuban and Frederic is a french
        Alex es un cubano y Federico es un francés

 2 Se usa en expresiones exclamativas que llevan las palabras “such / what” siempre y
   cuando el sustantivo que siga se refiera a algo concreto, tangible o palpable.

    ●   I had never seen such a papaya!
        Yo nunca había vísto semejante papaya!
    ●   What a beatiful car
        Que hermoso carro
    ●   What luck!
        Que suerte!

    Si se quiere enfatizar, sí puede usarse “a - an” aunque el sustantivo no sea concreto.

    ●   What a luck!
        Que suerte!

 3 Se usa con unidades de tiempo y de medida.

    ●   They go to holymass twice a month
        Ellos van a la santa misa dos veces al mes
    ●   Tomatoes are three dolars a kilo
        Los tomates están a tres dólares por kilo

 4 El artículo indefinido se usa con más frecuencia que la palabra “one” puesto que dicho
   numeral se usa para hacer énfasis en número o para marcar contrastes de cantidad.
●   There is only one holiday this month
    Sólo hay un día festivo este mes
●   He has seven brothers and one sister
    Él tiene siete hermanos y una hermana
