One of Marcel Pagnol’s cherished spot in Marseille. In his “trilogie
marseillaise”, Marius, the main character was torn between
his beloved one, Fanny, on shore and his love for the sea. And it
appears to be understandable… Restaurants, bars, sunny terraces,

It feels like the fish market of Marseille has always
been there, through centuries it has remained and
is still a place where one can buy freshly caught
seafood. Every day, let it be rain or shine the
fishermen are always there in the morning, near the
water line. You can hear some yelling ‘Criée’ which
is announcing that their fish is being sold and it is
definitely part of the magic of Marseille’s port.

The M Pavilion is a temporary structure spread
across 3,000m². Throughout the European Capital
of Culture year, it will showcase the cultural
programme and the Marseille Provence region.

and cultural attractions on offer in 2013.

plancha, including the preserve piece of pig.

In this store, you will find lot of goods like T-shirts,
bags or jewels done by local artists. Every product
is manufactured in France and made in limited
edition. This shop is an ephemeral one: it is based
in Jeunes Anacharsis Street only until December.

At the beginning, Le chateau d’If was a strategic place to
provide the city of Marseille. In the 17th century, it became
a prison where famous tale’s characters such as“The Count
of Monte Cristo” and “The Iron mask” were imprisoned..
Le Chateau d’If is located in one of the Frioul Islands so
you can also enjoy the wild landscape of those Islands. At
only 20 minutes by boat from the Vieux Port you can be
pleased with the wild landscape, the “calanques” and an
unobstructed view of the city.
La Canebière is Marseille’s most famous street, opening
directly onto the Old Port (Vieux Port). Its name
originates from the Provençal term canébé, meaning
“hemp,” and can be traced back to the 11th Century
when the street was home to ropemakers and hemp
merchants. Its lively hotels, luxury shops, theaters, and
cafes earned it an international reputation a bit like the
“Champs Elysées”in Paris.
This pleasant brewery welcomes you both in summer
and winter when you need to relax after being walking
all day long in the streets of Marseille. You’ll be able
to benefit from this large and shaded terrace close to
the old port both for drinks and enjoy their delicious
homemade burgers but also their tapas and many other

If you are looking for a very good and sophisticated
cuisine “La table du fort” is the right place to be.
seasonal food is always suggested on the menu. Not only
dishes are very good but aesthetically very interesting.
If you are gourmets you will not be disappointed, you
can be sure that the gourmets of Marseille know this
restaurant. Furthermore, the atmosphere is cozy and the
interior design is modern. As regards to the price we can
say that it is a real good value for money.
Situated at the entrance of the Vieux-Port on the
south bank, Fort Saint-Nicolas was built on the orders
of the “Sun King” Louis XIV. Built to watch over the
townspeople and to defend the crown against civil
unrest or rebellion, the canons were turned on the city.
The tower, named Entre casteaux, is now home to the
Foreign Legion. The only way to visit the fort is through
the Tourist Office which has arranged organised tours.
This place, founded in the 20th century, was the fish
wholesale for many years, before becoming the biggest
theater in the region. We can read « Criée for fishes » on
the entrance of the building. This place, which has been
transferred at Port Saumaty in 1976 is a symbolic place
of Marseille, especially for its name and architecture.
Nowadays, the building hosts The National Theater of
Marseille, which has a sitting capacity in excess of 1000
spectators, spread over two auditoriums.

the trendiest bar of the city and be prepared to
spend an amazing night. In this surprising pirate

This Museum has recently re-open for MP2013.
Situated on the relic gardens, it traces the history of the
foundations of Marseille and from the first centuries of its
existence around the spectacular wrecks from a ship from the
3rd Century, which was discovered in the port antique. There
is also a collection of important Marseillaisian family coat of

Between the Vieux Port and the commercial port
stands la Cathédrale de la Major, an important
symbol of Marseille. Its atypical architecture in the
Roman-Byzantin style is similar to that of the Bonne
Mère. Built at the end of the XIX century by Léon XIII,
it is one of the biggest churches constructed since
the middle ages. The inside, mainly in marble, is as
astonishing as the outside with its particular stripes.

In the heart of the oldest district of the city
this restaurant & shop is a good place to taste
Provençal dishes. From fresh and regional products
to the craftsman framework, everything is made to
make you feel the authenticity of Marseille. After

The architectural complex of the Vieille Charité,

rectangular form of the buildings comprises four
wings which open onto a courtyard, of which the
centrepiece is a beautiful domed chapel in Italian
baroque style.
The vielle charité is also a multidisciplinary centre
promoting science and culture, including the
Museum of Mediterranean Archeology and the
Museum of African, Oceanic, and Amerindian Arts
which aims to show elements from different and

The last relics of one of the oldest churches in
Marseille, this building was built in the 12th
Century and altered in the 14th and 17th Centuries.
It was destroyed during the French revolution of
1789 for hosting meetings of the sections who
were outraged by the convention. Only the bell was
saved.
Built in 1593 as a hospital, the Hotel Dieu is one of the em-
blematic buildings of Marseille which overlooks the Vieux
Port. A real architectural example in the 18thcentury, it was
completely renovated during the 19th century. Now it has
found a new identity as an outstanding starred hotel as
well as a Casino. You will truly enjoy the amazing style of
thebuildingandtheviewofthefamousVieuxPortfromthe
inside.

Situated in the very heart of the city, the house boasts
a striking façade of diamond-shaped stones and a
beautifully sculptured staircase. Built by a wealthy
Marseilles merchant between 1570 and 1576, it is a
fine example of 16th Century civil architecture. It was
inspired by the palaces of the Renaissance, in particular
the Diamond Palace in Ferrare, Italy. Today the building
houses a museum dedicated to the old town of Marseille.
Createdin1963,itremainsoneofthefewpreservedtrading
ports in the world. Discovered during the reconstruction
of the old port area which was destroyed during World
War II, these archeological remains are testimonies to the
commercial activity of Marseille, the Phocaean City, in
ancient times. For instance, you can see an amphora : the
ancient Greek two-handled jar, as well as gold coins.
Even if this address has been well known in the city for a
long time, it has made a strong comeback 3 years ago
thanks to the young owner as pleasant as his restaurant.
This modern “bistro” has a convenient atmosphere, with
their Argentinean barbecue, burgers, and various cheeses
but also homemade cocktails including the famous mojito.

In this charming shop, two young men, who have
brought the concept to Marseille, make frozen yo-
gurt. Basically it’s a 0% fat ice cream just as deli-
cious as regular ice cream. Add to that some fresh
fruits, a sweet topping, and you’ll get a tasty des-
sert. But the yogurt factory also makes some origi-
nal creations with tea, smoothies or fruit juices. For
a very special and sweet moment.
Close to the city hall, this literary café has a great
terrace on Mazau’s square. Trying one of their de-
licious and carefully prepared salads and cup of
tea during the lunch break is a must. There are also
bookstores, art and photography exhibitions in the
close area.

The Cours Julien is undoubtedly the artistic spot of the city. This
square could be a tribute to Maurice Bejart, a famous French

have to go at the restaurant « Les Gamins ». Any other
translation besides: « Kids » can’t be more appropriate
for this place.
Indeed, you will enjoy here a large variety of hamburg-
ers: classic burger or surprising burger such as « duck
burger ». In a nice atmosphere, the two nice bosses will
guide you to choose your dish. Alternative music and
trendy decoration, this place is definitely refreshing.
Any other translation besides « the taste of things » can’t
be more appropriate for this place. Classic and classy, it is
a traditional tasty restaurant. No big surprise here but just
good food and delicious atmosphere. With their « magret
de canard» and their pleasant environment, you will have

The beautiful stadium was built for the 1938 World
Cup. Enlarged for the 1998 World Cup, it is currently
the second largest stadium in France being able to
hold 60,000 spectators. It is Marseille’s shrine of
soccer and of course home to local team Olympique
Marseille who celebrated its centenary in 1999.
Designed by Le Corbusier, one of the most famous
French architects of the modern movement, this original
building is like a vertical village. There are true little
streets inside the building with a bakery, hostel and a
restaurant. Moreover you can find a swimming pool, an
elementary school and a running track on the roof.
This magnificent park on the south of the city was
designed by landscape gardener Alphan. Water is a major
feature here, with beautiful ponds and lakes throughout.
An 18th-century country house stands in the heart of
this open space, beautifully completed by a garden “à
la française”. Other points of interest include botanical
gardens with a rose garden and tropical greenhouse.

Facing the sea, the Palais du Pharo stands on a cliff just
beyond the borders of the Vieux Port. This palace built
during the 19th century for Napoléon III, is familiar to
sailors in the region, as it is seen as a welcoming site for
ships returning home. These days it is used as a place
for conferences and conventions, but the large garden
and the view of the Frioul Islands make it a place to be
enjoyed by everyone.
Ouch, that’s a difficult wake-up; my partner and I are
hungry. After an outstanding night, I need a perfect meal.
I’ve an idea. We decide to enter at “the Baron Perché”
and I lead my guest right next to the old wood stove; we
order one “terre”brunch. After a short chat, a nice waiter
interrupts us quickly with a homemade fruit salad and
some juice.That is exactly what I needed. I feel great with
a coffee, some toasted breads with maple syrup and jams.

At first it was just a small chapel built in 1218 on the
top of the hill which dominates the city. However,
over the centuries it has grown to become this huge
basilica we admire today. Marseille’s inhabitants call
it the “good mother” and believe that she looks after
them from this place. The site welcomes millions of
people each year from all around the world, some
because of their faith and others who simply admire
the architecture and the 360 degree views of Marseille
it offers. You can admire it from numerous spots
around the city but you cannot leave Marseille without

This beach, which lies between the Vieux Port and

There is a famous link between Marseille and the picturesque city
of Cassis; over 20km you can enjoy the limestone cliffs buried in the
clear water of the Mediterranean Sea. The area, whose complete
surface is 5000 hectares, has been classified as a protected site since
1975 and can be visited only by foot or by boat.
Magic and steep, the Calanques are the favorite place of tourists.
While they are difficult to access thanks to narrow paths, the
Calanques provide the pleasure of swimming and a stunning view
of the area. People who go there have to deserve the beauty of the
location: a long walk is required before one reaches the Calanques.
Rock climbing is a popular activity throughout the area due to the
many cliffs that surround the site.

In the middle of a mind blowing setting of high
cliffs, Sugiton’s calanque is made up of two peb-
bled beach coves. Opposite, a characteristic rocky
islet emerges, named “the rocher du torpilleur”
(rock of the torpedo boat) because it looks like a
warship.

Goudes-calanques
It is the most famous, the most spectacular and the
most grandiose of the calanques. En Vau is located
behind abrupt and jagged white cliffs. A special
place for climbing, the sea is incredibly clear and
spans the entire palette of blue and green.
It is possible to sail from the Vieux Port to the Calanques, with
several circuits of various length. Some go around the Frioul islands
and others directly into the Calanques, with a stop for some bathing
in the turquoise water. Audio comments are available in several
languages for every circuit. Lastly, if you wish to enjoy a cruise alone
or with friends, boats can be rented for private parties.
Les Goudes still looks like an undiscovered piece of the world. It is
a small fishermen’s village which has kept all of its authenticity. Its
name comes from the fact that to reach this area, you must take
a road full of bended curves. You can easily find nice bars and
restaurants, but don’t be surprised to find huge crowds once the
summer arrives: this is one of the most visited places in Marseille.

Town of art, town of history, Aix-en-Provence was built and developed
around this dual identity. Even if it typically reflects the spirit of Provence,
the town knows how to blend different cultures. It is a city with a human

It is an elegant and well-kept neighborhood which its inhabitants are

an emblematic figure of what we call “Provence,” was born and lived
in Aix-en-Provence. Today, you can see examples of his work in the
Cezanne studio or at the Art Museum.

like the Richelme of Cardeurs square where the sun can be enjoyed
throughout the day. In the evening, the city comes alive and you will
find some unavoidable places to party like the Mistral.If you want to get the most out

Those who have seen Paris but have not seen Cassis have seen nothing at
all. The village of Cassis is the very essence of Provence. A former fishing
port 15 minutes south of Marseille, the town is now largely supported by
tourismaswellasitsvineyards.
Always friendly and welcoming, you will find many places to eat, take a
break, or simply stroll through the labyrinth of streets.Varied meals, from
theauthentictotheProvencalandtheexoticareservedinterracesshaded
byfloweringtrees.
If the Creeks and Cap Canaille which made it famous are essential in
Cassis, the city itself is worth seeing. Its port, its architecture and its
beautiful square as well as its ocher and pink facades reflecting the sun
will delight you. Cassis is just a little piece of heaven.
Cap Canaille, 399 meters high, is the highest cliff in France. To reach its
peak, only the bravest hikers use marked paths, others will prefer to
drive along the winding roads of its crest. The view across the bay of
Cassis will be the same, breathtaking!
You will of course find the well known beaches of the city, often over-
crowded during the summer. This is without a doubt explained by the
beautyoftheturquoisewater,thefinesand,andtheubiquitousgreenery.

itslegendarylight,l’Estaqueisanareaonthenorth-westsideofMarseille.
Cezanne painted“Le Pin à L’Estaque”as a tribute to this sublime, typically
Mediterranean nature. With its marina and its beaches, this picturesque
villagemaintainsaspecialatmosphere,stampedwithtradition.
Once the summer returns, there are plenty of activities in this former
hamlet of fishermen and tile manufacturers. Come here to sit outside
at a café or to simply go for a walk on the steep paths of the Calanque.
Whatever you do, do not leave without having tried the Chichi-fregi.

You are tired of guided tours succeeding each other,
you just want to rest, think of nothing so Starter
Park is a good solution... Fall back into childhood in
this amazing site near Marseille; try Go Karting or
the Quad bikes, if you feel less secure with vehicles
go on a paintball fight with your friends. Open
whatever your age, gender or level you will find
fun times here for sure.
Originally a popular dish made within fishermen’s
families, this simple dish has become a gourmet’s
choice, with notable fishes included in the
preparation, like angler fish, and some shell-fishes
as well.
This famous liquor was invented in 1932 by Paul
Ricard. It is made from many plants including anise
which gives it this special smell and taste. Very
refreshing when served with ice, it is the favorite
drink of people from Marseille for the aperitif.
This soap is famous in the world, it’s still made in the
traditional way by some manufacturers in Marseille,
and made exclusively from olive and a few other
vegetable oils. Although many other products exist
today, the therapeutic virtues of this product have
prevented it from simply disappearing.
This sport played with metal balls is from Marseille
and everyone can play it. The goal is to throw the
metal balls as close as possible to a tiny wooden
ball, while standing at a precise location.
