Little Buddy system uses GPS to keep track of children's wearabouts - Salt Lake City Utah County Libertarian

  1. 1. Little Buddy system uses GPS to keep track of children's wearabouts - Salt Lake City Utah County Libertarian According to a recent Sun Times article, the Little Buddy GPS system will enable parents to track their children when they are away. Much like the GPS systems in automobiles can use global positioning satellites to pinpoint your car's location for navigation purposes, the Little Buddy can be placed in a child's backpack or other location in order to follow his or her movements during the day. The system can also be programmed to alert parents if see this children leave a designated area by sending a text message notifying them that the child has left the area. While this might cut down on the number of children who play hooky and run off to the mall during school hours, it is a frightening technological breech of privacy. However, it should be noted that it is not the first or only device to enable people to be tracked. On Star systems in many automobiles allow for official site pinpointing the position of a car at any given time. Cell phones also allow for people to be tracked via cell tower triangulation. Even U.S. passports have contained RFID chips with tracking and information capabilities for several years. However, this is the first such device that I know of that is expressly for tracking an individual's location. It is a lot like the chips you can have implanted into your pets in case they get lost, but for a child. Obviously, this is not implanted either, which would seem to make it easy to get around for the child. Regardless of your feelings towards the device, this is most likely a trend that we will see more of in the future. GPS and other technologies provide room for a lot of information to be available to whoever is provided access to it. http://www.examiner.com/article/little-buddy-system-uses-gps-to-keep-track-of-children-s-wearabouts
