– ‘Constituents’ (Gardner, J.W., 1986)
– ‘Participants’ (Ford, J.F., 1990)
• The Problem?
– Industrial era notion of the word Followers; Passive &
Submissive;
1. Part of sweaty masses, hence separated from elites
2. Inability to act intelligently without guidance/control
3. Willingness to let other (elites) control their lives
4. Unproductive unless directed by others
– As opposed to Leaders; who are seen as being;
• Directive & active and,
• Elites
New Leadership Paradigm
1. Only those who are active in the relationship
can be considered followers
2. People can fall at various points on a continuum
of activity
3. Followers can become leaders; leaders can
become followers
4. People are leaders in some organizations,
followers in others
5. Followers do not do ‘followership,’ but rather
are participants in the leadership relationship
