Learning Outcomes. At the end
of this session, you will know…
1. what Moodle is
2. where the SCM Moodle site is,
   and what it looks like
3. what Moodle can be used for
4. how to use the SCM Moodle site to
   -create a simple course
-create a simple link to a website
   -create a simple forum
PART I

OO means a collection of
objects and the interactions
between them
Created by teachers
    for teachers
In Social Constructivism…
• the learner is actively involved in a joint enterprise with
the teacher of creating ("constructing") new meanings.

• The role of the teacher is to enter into a dialogue with
the learner, trying to understand the meaning to that
learner of the material to be learned, and to help her or
him to refine their understanding until it corresponds with
  that of the teacher.
• Teacher: “I will actively interact with you to
help you know what I know”
Social Constructivism – learning theory
that emphasizes that learning is an
active social process in which individuals
make meanings through the interactions
with each other and with the environment
they live in.

Knowledge is thus a product of humans
and is socially and culturally constructed.

PART III With Moodle, you can

Create a course that is the online
equivalent of a real-world course that you
 teach (with a weekly layout)

Extend the class activity beyond the
 standard classroom hours (via homework)
 and supports asynchronous learning (useful
for part-timers and those who missed class)

 Allow collaborative learning and knowledge
 sharing via wikis
With Moodle, you can
Create online, self-marking and passworded
Quizzes (activated on a specific date/time)
Monitor students’ online activities
(via activity logs)
Get students to upload softcopy work
or assignments, where the grade can be
given.

Upload documents, PYQs, past test
questions for students to view or download.
With Moodle, you can

Interact with students by replying to posts
In forums that you create

Have students record their thoughts and
make notes in the Moodle blogs (built-in)

Have online chat with logging of chat
sessions (useful only in teacher-students
schedule chats, otherwise is a waste of time)
With Moodle, you can

Link to educational videos from
Youtube.com or TeacherTube.com.

Use educational games to complement the
Learning (built-in Millionaire quiz, Sudoku,
Hangman, Crosswords, etc.)

Allow students to leave voice recordings
(Nanogong)
With Moodle, admin staff can
Create sections (courses) that are
password-protected so that only those know
the password can access (download) files. E.g.,
Excel, Word, Powerpoint, etc.

Store promotional or marketing material or
work files, again secured by passwords

Store training materials for future reference
(e.g., all staff development powerpoint
presentation files)
In Conclusion, with Moodle,
                    Moodle
Academic staff can create a learning environment
for students where self-directed learning activity
can be monitored – no programming needed;

Administrative staff can create password protected
areas to store work-related files or training material
that can be accessed by others in a team

Does this sound like a lot of work? Yes it is. But once the
initial hurdle is cleared, it becomes easier as you slowly add
more resources and activities to your Moodle course.
My advice is - start small. “Life’s a climb, but the view’s great!”
Questions?

 Okay, so how do you
  think you can use
Moodle in your work at
        SCM?
PART IV How to use the SCM Moodle site:
          http://scm.moodlehub.com

You can log in using your
                       Stamford email address
                    (minus the @stamford.edu.my
                     part). Password is the same.
                       E.g., zuraika.abu.bakar
Alternatively, you can
 create your own user name,
but you have to inform me so
that I can set you as a course
            creator
This is what main page looks
like. You can see who has
logged in in the past 2 hours
All SCM staff are automatically
course creators. Click the
Courses link to add a new
course
Enter
course
details
Set the start
and end of the
course
Password
protect the
course with an
enrolment key
(password)
Click
Your
course
page.
Notice the
weekly
layout?
As a course
creator, you
must turn

  • 31. With Moodle, you can Link to educational videos from Youtube.com or TeacherTube.com. Use educational games to complement the Learning (built-in Millionaire quiz, Sudoku, Hangman, Crosswords, etc.) Allow students to leave voice recordings (Nanogong)
  • 32. With Moodle, admin staff can Create sections (courses) that are password-protected so that only those know the password can access (download) files. E.g., Excel, Word, Powerpoint, etc. Store promotional or marketing material or work files, again secured by passwords Store training materials for future reference (e.g., all staff development powerpoint presentation files)
  • 33. In Conclusion, with Moodle, Moodle Academic staff can create a learning environment for students where self-directed learning activity can be monitored – no programming needed; Administrative staff can create password protected areas to store work-related files or training material that can be accessed by others in a team Does this sound like a lot of work? Yes it is. But once the initial hurdle is cleared, it becomes easier as you slowly add more resources and activities to your Moodle course. My advice is - start small. “Life’s a climb, but the view’s great!”
