Foreword
Hari Om!
We are pleased to bring you the Fifteenth edition of the e-book series from the Kanchi Periva Forum. As you
might be aware, we have been regularly publishing free ebooks with a view to disseminate knowledge about the
Hindu tradition & culture, and more importantly carry the message of Sri Maha Periva to our members by setting
His discourses within the appropriate topic and in the right context for the readers to read and relish the same.
This month, we are continuing with the series we commenced in April 2013 – on the topic of “Supreme Scientific
Secrets from ancient India”. The base content of the original writing is provided by Sri Raguram Gopalan, one of
our respected members and an excellent thinker. We have great pleasure in bringing to you the excellent work of
Sri Raguram Gopalan, which is interspersed now with ample dose of Periva’s discourses on those topics, so that
you can enjoy the beautiful and thoughtful messages by our Nadamaadum Deivam (Walking God), Sri Maha
Periva, extolling the deep scientific aspects, and greatness of our own religion.
As in the previous editions, you would get to read the original writings of Sri Raguram Gopalan, coupled with
Periva’s articles in English to the extent available. To ensure that our Tamil readers enjoy His language and style
of speak, we are providing an appendix of all those discourses in Tamil as well at the end of the ebook with

About the Author
Sri Raguram Gopalan
Sri Raguram Gopalan was born in Chennai as the first child to Mrs. & Mr. Gopalan
Venkataraman Iyer in Chennai. His grandfather Sri. Venkatarama Sastrigal was a
renowned Sanskrit and Vyakarna teacher in Kumbakonam Raja Patashala. He did
his schooling in Chennai and Kumbakonam.
Sri Raguram currently works in a private company as Senior Vice President and is
a MBA Gold medalist with dual specialization in Marketing and Systems & an
Electronics Engineering graduate. He is a voracious reader, blogger and is
interested in Indian Philosophy, Siddha principles, History, Music & Yoga. He is a
black belt holder in his karate school, a Pranic healer and student of Tai Chi.
Since 2001 his universe revolves around Priya (wife) and Aishwarya & Adityaa (Kids) and is currently settled in
Bangalore. You can visit his blog @ http://ragsgopalan.blogspot.in/

From the Author
“Curious by nature, in a life so uncertain
Thirsty for the truth, which is so certain
I sought for some water in our Vedas ‐ the fountain
Though I can’t understand fully what it contains
I am amazed & speechless with what I could ascertain
This is just a speck of dust from that golden mountain
Thankful to my family for helping me in what I could attain
Grateful for the wisdom and works from all the chieftains
Wish I repay every atom of it through my gratuitous tearstains”
This effort is to share what I read, understood and enjoyed about the scientific aspects in ancient India which are
codified in our language, arts and in 1000s of temples. The quotes and examples are predominantly in Tamil but I
have tried to give the meaning which can enable a reader to grasp the meaning and progress. Any shortcomings
you notice are purely reflective of my abilities to understand and express. There was not even an iota of intention
to hurt any sentiments or beliefs of others.
I initially thought that I shall reproduce a prayer from one of the books which I had read but at one fine moment I
decided to capture my feelings in my own words. So I scribbled few lines in English summing up my feelings as
above, few lines for the Sage of Kanchi and a prayer in Tamil with its meaning in English. You may understand this
prayer better after you read this book. Please feel free to copy and reproduce in whichever form - see how much
of this can you share to dispel the ignorance. The more you share the better. If I have acknowledged any books or
authors please recognize them and ensure that you either buy their books or donate to their cause. They deserve
all the credits.

Periva’s voice: Advice for Retired Pensioners
Group of Retired Pensioners: What should we do?
Sri Maha Periva: Who are you all?
Group of Retired Pensioners: We are pensioners.
Sri Maha Periva: I was waiting for you only all this time. You
alone are the Kalpaka (wish-yielding) trees for our nation. If
you will, our country will turn into gold. If you keep weeping
with family worries and anxiety, all can only weep.
You become ripe Kalpaka trees and provide shade and sweet
food to the flying birds, the crawling worms and all the
animals in the intermediate region. Make them grow
happily.
If you are a retired engineer, provide food for at least two
boys and train them to become equivalent of Overseer. Even
if they do not get a degree, let them earn their living by
working in private or with contractors or companies.
We have consumed many items from this world. We have enjoyed many items. What have we done for the
world in return? If we die without doing anything in return, we will be big robbers. Our life will go waste. To
join and study in colleges and schools has now become impossible (like getting honey from beehive for a
lame man).
What will poor people do? Doing job is itself a lowly profession, devoid of freedom and self-respect. The way
colleges and job procedures exist now; getting job is just a dream. Sometimes we day-dream that in case job
is not available, everything will return to the earlier way of life of Aachara (conduct). That remains a daydream only so far.
When job is not available, our boys fall for still more deplorable (avenues of) hotels, military, cinema etc.
Once they go there, the purity of Aachara and food and lofty ideals, which our elders have protected for
thousands of years, will all be as good as lost.
Will our government protect us from such a danger? This is a matter which everyone should ponder over and
come to a conclusion. There is no need to write much on this.
We praise sky-high in every newspaper article and discourse about our arts, our culture, our philosophy etc.
The first act of those of us who have ‘advanced’ is to destroy them. Though some of us abstain from
destroying them directly, we watch the fun when they are being washed away in the river.
When government is in the hands of such people, in order that our next generation does not degenerate
further, those who have studied our culture and retired from service in various departments should help a
little.

This is nothing big for you. If four-five such pensioners get together, they can start a private tutorial college
and an adjoining hostel. To those boys, who are interested in performing rituals as per their family
traditions, a little of religious education and training in performance of rituals can also be given.
Anybody who goes for studies as per family traditions is unable nowadays to have modern education. The
good fortune to remove this deficiency is that of educated and retired pensioners.
Such elders should undertake to render this service either alone or in groups. Let us not worry about degrees
and diploma certificates; each of us can, as far as possible, help in poor boys getting knowledge of modern
subjects without spoiling their Aachara and performance of rituals and in fact, growing them.
Whether it be chemistry, physics, mathematics, literature, accounts, engineering, electrical engineering,
physical education, weaving, machines etc., handicrafts, instrumental education in harmonium etc., there
are experts who have retired from service and are available.
Only if they spend at least a small part of their life for children of future generations, our children will escape
from hotels and cinema. At least a little of self-respect and purity of food will remain. Even if some
remaining elders offer to teach foundations of our culture, viz. Vedas, Sastras, old works like Kural, Sastra of
Siddhas etc., nobody wishes to learn.
On the other hand if there is offer to prepare children free of cost for examinations like London Matric,
Cambridge Senior etc. or to teach for four years and arrange for direct admission in Form IV, a lot of children
will come forward to utilise the offer. We can help such children by providing support for later life and at the
same time by seeing that they do not swerve much from our true ancient culture.
If there are occasional persons who study basic texts like Veda, those who are economically strong should
help those who teach and those who learn these texts to live a life without difficulty. This alone is watering
the plant at the root.
Note: As per texts of Dharma, anybody can do this danam of Vidya. Those who are born a vipro should
certainly do at least a little of this. All can do the dharma of protecting cows. But as per Gita, vaisyas should
definitely do this. (‘Krishi Gourakshya vanijyam vaisya- karma svabhavajam’- Gita 18:44).
A superior brahmana is one who learns all arts and, without using them for his own living, considers it his
duty and purpose of life to teach them to those of the respective castes.
Everyone should thus learn at least one art and teach it definitely to others. By everyone practising this
method, it is possible to make the public comprehensive in knowledge and power, many times more than
what a king could achieve.

Shiva Lingam is not a Phallus
If there is one part in the series I want you to read and talk about it with your friends then it is this topic.
If I ask you as to what Shiva Linga stands for then more than 99% of the responses would be that it represents a
Phallus symbolizing the male sex organ / creative energy with the female sex organ / creative energy - Yoni as the
base and both together representing inseparability and totality in the process of creation.
Nothing is more misunderstood and misquoted than this concept of Hinduism. Every idiot including me who has
read few books about Hinduism thinks that they are experts of Indology / Vedic studies. The wisest of sages who
gave us Vedas and Upanishads did not boast that it is their work. At the end of every work they acknowledged
that they are telling us what they have been told by their ancestors.
It is 155 trillion+ years of universal knowledge available today in the richest of the languages Tamil and Sanskrit.
This cannot be accurately interpreted in a foreign language. Lest in the weakest of all languages - English.
The other contributing factor to this misunderstanding has been the Sanskrit language or should I say the
richness of the language.
We have already noted that the same word can have multiple meanings. This is not limited to Sanskrit, but to all
the languages. For example,





Sutra means thread, Aphorisms (the ability to express something in terse and concise manner). Ex. Kama
sutra – the most understood of all the sutras. Brahma Sutra – The thread of consciousness in any form
that runs in this universe – the most unheard of.
Artha in Sanskrit means “meaning” and “wealth”, we have already seen this. As in Vaak-Artha and Artha
Sastra (the science of wealth management).
Same way Lingam means Symptom, Proof, Gender, Male sex organ etc. Hence it was very easy to get
confused, associate the lingam with a Phallus and also to ignore the philosophy and the supreme science
behind it. Even people who believed that it represented much more did not knew the philosophy and the
science behind it. Let’s look at what it means.

I am going to request you to kindly refer to both the pictures below:

Figure 15 – Shiva Linga – Shape and Significance (Courtesy; Dr. Ganapathi Sthapati)
We have already seen that the subtle energy is takes the form of a square and the gross energy takes the form of
a circle with an in-between state it takes the shape of a tetrahedron and octagon. Now look at the Shiva lingam
from the top. Its base is always a square and the top is always a circle.

Figure 16 – Shiva Linga

Figure 17 – Shiva Linga with shape of the God’s particle
(Star) engraved.

If I have to merge all the 3 shapes together and it naturally takes the shape of a Lingam with a round top. Shiva
Linga captures the overall process of evolution in one form and shape - subtle to gross state – it encompasses
every state of consciousness that is possible in this universe.
Why the figure above states that Square shape is Sattvic, circle is Tamasic and the in between state is Rajasic?
Let’s understand the definitions of all the three qualities.


Sattvic represents the perfect state of balance. When it is subtle it is luminescent and in a perfect state
of resonant non-vibration. The energy levels were perfect so that the resultant vibration is nil and it is
in absolute balance.



Tamasic state represents a state where the height of evolution is reached and hence it is farthest away
from the core. This is a different explanation from the usual one available in the web and books. Let me

© Copyrights reserved Kanchi Periva Forum – www.periva.proboards.com & www.periva.org

explain this. The core is very subtle and the tamasic state is very gross and hence it is away from the core.
Tamasic state then should be considered as the darkest state possible. Why?
o

o



Because the core is luminescent and if the gross state is farthest from the core hence it should be
dark. This is the meaning behind the most famous statement ‘Tamasoma Jyothir gamaya”… take
me from darkness to light. It is not about just your mind but about the entire being aspiring to
become a light and merge with primordial light.
There is no evolution possible beyond the Tamasic state and it has to devolve to reach its core /
subtle state.

Rajasic is a state where the pulsation has resulted in a rotational force and hence things are set into
action. This represents the evolution process and hence associated with action.

Then the natural next question is, if Shiva Lingam is associated with the entire spectrum of consciousness then
we should see it associated the elements and the light. Isn’t?





There is a story in Indian Purana that Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva discussed who is the most powerful
among them.
Lord Shiva challenged Brahma and Vishnu to reach his head and feet respectively.
Brahma tried to find Shiva’s head and Vishnu tried to reach Shiva’s feet, both of them failed.
Most of us would have heard the story but would not have understood the philosophical and scientific
significance.
o

o
o

o



Lord Shiva in the form of Linga stood there as a PILLAR OF LIGHT. This pillar of light is the Brahma
Sutra / light of consciousness which spanned from the center of the galaxy (Hiranyagarba) to
every being & non-being in the Universe.
Brahma could not find the head because; Brahma is always associated with intelligence in Indian
texts.
Brahma gave the supreme wisdom - the Vedas and stands for Intelligence. He could not reach
Shiva’s head signifies that Intelligence will not take you to God. Intelligence as an energy is too
gross and cannot reach the most subtle state of light.
Vishu represents earthly life – Rajasic in character – this is the tetrahedron & octagon state. He
could not reach Lord Shiva’s feet signifying you cannot reach the core through actions.

Lord Shiva in the form of Lingam is represented as one of the elements (Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and
Space) in the Hindu temples.

If you read the following Upanishad quote, you can probably understand the meaning:
na karmaNaa na prajayaa dhane
na tyaagenaike amRitatvamaanashuH
pareNa naakam nihitam guhaayaaM
vibhraajate yadyatayo vishanti
Not by work, not by progeny, not by wealth, they have attained Immortality.
Some have attained Immortality by renunciation.
That which the hermits attain is laid beyond the heaven; yet it shines brilliantly in the (purified) heart.
© Copyrights reserved Kanchi Periva Forum – www.periva.proboards.com & www.periva.org

And this quote also brilliantly articulates the luminescent nature of the Paramaanu:
na tatra (not there) suryo bhaati (sun shines)
na candra (moon does not) na tarakam (nor the stars)
nema vidyuto (nor the lightning) bhanti (shines)
kuta ayam agnih (how can fire shine)
tam (that) eva (alone) bhantam (shines)
anubhati (thereafter shines) sarvam (everything)
tasya bhasa (in that light)
sarvam idam vibhati (everything shines)
The sun does not shine there, nor does the moon, nor the stars or the lightning, much less this fire (deepam).
When He shines, everything shines after Him; by His light alone everything is illumined.
The trick is to take the definition & meaning from Upanishads or any scripture and apply it to the God’s particle
and the process of evolution and you would understand it perfectly.
Many a times the concept of God & faith obscures our mind to look beyond and rationally think about it. It is not
the problem of religion but our system of education which has ruined our thinking.
Today the biggest challenge we have is to "Unlearn" than to learn.
So to conclude:
 Shiva Lingam does not represent Phallus. To represent male and female totality and inseparability Hindus
do have Arthanareeswara and it is not represented through Lingam.
 Shiva Lingam represents the Pillar of Light and the entire spectrum of consciousness. From the most
subtle to the most gross.
 It represents an in-between Guna / EGG state (between un-manifest and manifest) and hence it is
formless with a form.
 While Lord Nataraja represented the rhythmic pulsation of this Brahma sutra, the cosmic dance / the
dance of the evolution, Shiva Lingam represents the primordial light itself in all its state of
consciousness.
 By this analogy, our body itself is a lingam with the visible body as the gross part at one end and the most
subtle body which is invisible and is part of the primordial light at the other.
Check out the picture below which represents most of the aspects we have discussed so far.
May Lord Shiva help us all to understand Him better..

This diagram represents everything we have discussed so far. The central red line is the Brahma Sutra which runs
from the center of Galaxy to the terrestrial forms. Just correlate this with the Mayan Hunab Ku in the previous
part.
This summarizes as to how Energy becomes matter, Subtle becomes Gross, Un-Manifest becomes manifest, how 8
becomes 9, and Square / Cuboid becomes a circle / Sphere. All represented in one formless form called SHIVA LINGAM.

Periva’s voice: Lingam is Aroopa Roopam
So far we have seen Vinãyaka and his interactions
with the trio who have sung the Thevãram songs and
as to how it has been mentioned in their songs and
how evidence is available in folk-lore of there being a
'ஓலமிட்ட

விநாயகர்',

பிள்ரையார்',
'செவி

'கூப்பிடு

'மாற்று

உரைத்த

பிள்ரையார்',

and

ொய்த்த விநாயகர்' in various temple

towns, as proof of the various active roles played by
PiLLaiyar in these incidents.
In his writings MaNikka Vãsagar has not made a
mention of PiLLaiyar anywhere. But they have had
some intimate interactions. Let me tell you about one
story which may not be known to most of you.
In the olden times the best route from Pãndya
Kingdom to the Sozha Desam was through this place
known as Ãvudaiyãr Kovil aka Thirupperundurai.
There was a place for transients to stay for the night,
known as Chathiram in that town.

Besides that was a PiLLaiyar statue installed in the open space without a roof over his head.
Normally such PiLLaiyar in the open air without a roof overhead are known as a PiLLaiyar who preferred the
sunlight and so had a name as, 'veyil uganda piLLaiyar' – 'சவய்யில் உகந்த பிள்ரையார்'! Here the
PiLLaiyar had gone a step ahead and is said to have suffered the Sunlight for the sake of travellers on behalf of
them – vicarious suffering and so was known as 'veyyil kãththa piLLaiyar' – 'சவய்யில் காத்த
பிள்ரையார்'!

You may be aware of the fact that Vãdavurãr as MãNikka Vãsagar was originally known, as the minister of the
Pãndya Nãdu had gone to the Sozha Nãdu with funds for the purchase of horses. On the way he stayed in this
Chathiram for a night. This 'Open Air Theatre PiLLaiyar' came in his dream.
To demonstrate the theory of Adwaitam, he occurred in the dream as Brhma, Vishnu and Rudra, repeatedly
morphing in to the other and told him, "You will construct a temple here in this very place for the Para
Brhmam.
Do not ask me as to how to construct a temple for the Brhmam which is without form and without any defining
characteristics known as 'NirguNa'! I know that it is difficult to display a form for the formless. But it is
essential to make people understand and comprehend the idea.
Brhmam is 'aroopam' that is, formless. Other than Siva Lingam all the other statues of Gods are three© Copyrights reserved Kanchi Periva Forum – www.periva.proboards.com & www.periva.org

dimensional! But Siva Lingam is neither form nor without form, a sort of an oblong sphere known as
'arooparoopa' – 'अरूपरूपं'! The base for the Siva Lingam is 'Ãvudaiyãr' – 'ஆவுரடயார்', indicative of Brhma,
Vishnu and Rudra as the trio and above all that, (not exactly 'above' but beyond) the trio, is Sivam. This is a
symbolic representation only.

But people overly impressed by the 3 D picture as seen by the eyes and perceived by the mind think of it also
as a form only! It is normal for common people to have such common ideas! But in such a big country like
ours, there has to be at least one temple for the formless primordial Param, isn't it?
A temple to encompass the idea of form and formless, GuNa and NirguNa, from here and now to infinity and
eternity! So, having installed the 'Ãvudaiyãr', leave it without installing the Siva Lingam on top of it.
The empty space does not mean that it is nullity but the inclusive principle of all existence! To enable people to
understand, that God is a principle of all parts of existence, name the God here as the 'Ãtma Nãtha Swami'. Do
not construct the temple straight away because I have told you.
My Father will appear before you under the 'Kurundai' tree as the Guru and advice you to make you
understand, comprehend and experience that the indwelling Ãtma in all living beings is none-else but the same
Para Brhmam! After that you do the construction of the temple!" PiLLaiyar vanished after that.
Thus from the statement of an elephant (the PiLLaiyar), money meant for purchase of horses was made use of
for the construction of Ãvudaiyãr temple, that is the temple for Rishabha the bull!
This word Ãvudaiyãr means the owner of all cattle. The 'Udaiyar' means the owner as given in the stone
carvings in temples where it is mentioned in Tamil as 'Nageschchuram Udaiyar' – 'நாககச்சுைம் உரடயார்'
and 'Raja Rajechchuram Udaiyar' – 'ைாஜ ைாகஜச்சுைம் உரடயார்'.
It means that the Bull is the Pasupati for all cows and Siva is the Pasupati for all animals and human beings too,
as after all human beings are also animals only! So, all of us put together are only animals and so are included
in the word 'Pasu' and God as the Master for all of us is the 'Pasu Pati'! Thus the temple became 'Ãvudaiyãr
Kovil' – 'ஆவுரடயார் ககாயில்'.
If it is to be literally translated, we should be calling it the 'Bull Temple'! Not only the temple, but the temple
town of 'Thirupperundurai' also came to be known by the name of the temple as 'Ãvudaiyãr Kovil' with the
passage of time! AmbãL is also formless here as 'Yogãmbikai'!
As both AmbãL and Swami have been left without a statue here, what MãNikka Vãsagar did was to install
three PiLLaiyar statues at the entrance of the temple, to emphasise the fact that he appeared in three different
forms as Brhma, Vishnu and Rudra as well as the Para Brhmam in the form of PiLLaiyar, I suppose!
In the temples of many places, we do find two PiLLaiyar statues one in the outer entrance and one in the inner
Prãhãram. Only here in the Ãvudaiyãr Kovil we are faced with a row of three PiLLaiyar statues abreast at the
very entrance!

The Primordial Circular Force – Ganapati & Maths
In the last few decades the main stream western science has started accepting concepts like uncertainty
principle, wave mechanics, quantum mechanics, and periodicity of the wave pattern. Most importantly it is about
the fundamental wave pattern of any energy or matter and the harmonics of these wave patterns falling in a
particular form and proportion which is dictated by geometry / mathematics. In all the western scientists are
scratching their heads on the depths of science of the subtle aka the sacred spatial geometry.
Most of the eastern philosophies have mastered this science and have codified these natural laws as a part of
their religion, which is often dismissed as superstition. I already highlighted that in Tamil and Sanskrit the
definition for science is “Knowledge of the space”.
Modern science is moving in the right direction albeit very slow and they are trying to understand as to how
elements are bonded within a molecule in addition to what elements constitute them. For example Chlorophyll
molecule consists of Carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and magnesium (Mg at its core) has a complex 12 fold Pattern
– just one such typical pattern which can convert sunlight into life substance. The same pattern exists in our RBC
cells just that it has an iron at its core instead of magnesium.
The understanding about the human body especially, “the spatial awareness that exists in each and every cell is
due to the different sensory organs tuned at frequencies”, led the scientists to unravel the innate spatial
geometry of life.
Be it living, non-living beings, abstract forces like gravity, nuclear force, electromagnetism, heat, movement of
astronomical bodies it does not matter what, everything in this universe adheres to a vibration / periodicity and is
reducible to a number or a ratio. As a wise man said, “Mathematics is the language of gods”. This primordial
rhythm & its harmonics are captured under the topic “Seelam” by Mayan in ancient tamil texts. Let’s look at
this in detail.
I have been finding it difficult to sequence the flow for this topic and let me try starting from the basics:


We know that the Paramaanu or God’s particle is a cube. This particle with the primordial vibration
combines with other particles to create a shape. The Paramaanu combines in the multiples of 8 to
evolve the next structure. Let us see the importance of 8 later, but remember 8 is the number for Lord
Narayana and Om namo Narayana has 8 Aksharas.



What do you call a cube called in Tamil? It is called Ganam (கனம்). This also means heaviness, gravity,
honor, dignity, abundance, plenty. To indicate it is a square cuboid they call it கன ெதுைம்.



The process of the addition of Paramaanu into bigger units is called as Ganam (கணம், गणं). In Tamil

both the Cube and the additive resultant are called as Ganam and the only difference
being that in Cube it uses a small “na” (ன) as an alphabet. In the additive process /
resultant it uses a Big “na”(ண). The big “na” signifies that due to the additive process
the small (na) becomes big (na).


This additive process starts because of the first rhythmic circular force also called as a
Suzhi (சுழி) in tamil which means “loop”.

© Copyrights reserved Kanchi Periva Forum – www.periva.proboards.com & www.periva.org



Here comes the beauty. The Lord of or the energy associated with this additive force (Ganam) is called as
Ganapathi (கணபதி, गणपती). Note this is the bigger “na” used and not smaller “na”.
He is associated with the first circular force - Suzhi (and hence he takes the first honor in
any Vedic ritual. This means Lord Ganapati is the first process in the evolution and
everything has to start with him. Even if it is Lord Shiva or Vishnu it does not matter, the
very first honor goes to the Lord of Ganas. Many Indians when they start writing (atleast few decades
back) they first start with this symbol at the top of the page before anything for a successful completion
of that activity.



If I add my own inferences to the above with a caveat that everything else I have written have a solid
back up mostly from our own study of languages (as you can yourself see) and our scriptures.
o The symbol above signifies that what was “a point” with untouched / non-interacting energies /
resulted in the primordial first circular force out of a pulse and also signifying that every circular
force shall also collapse back to a point.
o Also the bigger / heavier things are formed or created by its smallest unit and hence symbolically
the heavier ones are carried by the smaller units. To signify this may be a god in the form of an
elephant is carried by a mouse.



Now you know why every ritual starts with this Sloka to Ganapathi:
o

“GanAnAm tva Ganapati gum Havamahe, Kavim Kavinam Upamasra vastamam
Jyestharajam Brahmanam Brahmanaspat aana Srnvan nuti bhissi dasadanam”
This means “May you the Lord of Ganas, Ganapati",... . so it goes.



Now what do we call the study of this additive force - Ganas? Mathematics – Ganith / Ganitham
(கணிதம், गणणत ).



So we Indians have codified:
o the primordial God’s particle as Paramaanu or microbode or Lord Shiva,
o the rhythmic movement of the pillar of light as Lord Nataraja,
o the first circular force as the symbol for Lord Ganapathi,
o the lord of the additive force as Lord Ganapthi and
o the Study of this additive force which leads to the formation of everything in the universe is
Mathematics in Sanskrit and Tamil.
o Every possible state of consciousness and manifestation is represented in Shiva Linga
o We will see that the multiples of 8 in which the additive force moves is codified as Lord
Narayana or Vishnu and the five state manifestation process as the five letters associated with
Lord Shiva.

Just forget that these names are the names of the Hindu gods, and tell me one religion or philosophy or one
branch of science in this world which can capture the nature’s primordial secret in this way and codify it for the
common benefit of the world and carry it for thousands / millions of years.
These are just a start and please wait for the other interesting aspects to unfold.

Periva’s voice: Vinayakar
Now about this sloka starting with ‘suklaambaradaram’, which
we all say to start with any of our religious and ceremonial
‘karya’, though thought to be addressed towards PiLLaiyar; does
not contain any reference to PiLLaiyar, surprisingly! None of his
names such as, GaNapathy, GaNesa, Vinayaka, and or words
such as, Gowrisuta or Sivatmaja; have been used in the sloka.
His ‘vahanam’ (carrier – mooshika the rodent rat), or favourite
weapon (paashahastha), or favourite dish (modaka) find a
mention in that sloka! None of his physical identifications such
as, gajamukha (elephant faced), ekadanta (whose one tusk had
been broken thus giving him the name of ‘single tusked’); or
lambhodara (whose tummy is big); are referred!
Not mentioning even a single one of his famous exploits!
The sloka is as follows:- “shuklaambaradharam, vishnum, sasi
varNam, chaturbhujam I prasanna vadanam dyaayet sarva vigna
upa saantaye II” ‘shuklaambaradharam’ = wearing white dress; so do
all males. Those who wear other colours are referred as ‘pitambaradhari’ or ‘raktambaradhari’ wearing yellow
or red dress respectively. So, the first word does not refer to only PiLLaiyar!
Next word is, ‘vishnum’! This means, ‘Omni present’, especially known as a name for PiLLaiyar’s uncle and not
him! So, the nephew gets the name of his maternal uncle and we also are reminded of him only and not
PiLLaiyar!
Next is, ‘sasi varNam’ = of the colour of the moon; so is Easwara and Saraswathy! This is followed by ‘chatur
bhujam’ = four armed; this is the common characteristic of all deities! So, again it does not necessarily refer to
PiLLaiyar! Then the sloka talks of, ‘prasanna vadanam’ = smiling faced; can you think of a God who is not
having a pleasant smiling face? Except for KaaLi, Nrusimha Murthy, Veera Bhadra and such Ugra Swaroopa-s,
all Gods are pleasant faced only! But, more than any other God, in one way, it will be agreed that PiLLaiyar has
a smiling face dripping happiness, with a broad countenance of a baby elephant!
For each of the above five words, we have to knock on the fore-head with our knuckles, known in Tamil as
‘kuttik-koLvadhu’- five times! Then we have to do ‘dhyaayet’ that is think deeply of, ‘sarva vigna upa
saantaye’! Having not mentioned a word of his name or any of the known characteristics, now you have to
deeply think about that special ability of that God, who can get all your trouble cancelled! That is PiLLaiyar!
Before starting on any venture or endeavour, think of him and pray – say this sloka and at least once do the
‘kuttu’! Even before the child grows up to be able to learn any of these sloka-s by heart, the child is told, “Son,
before starting anything, think of PiLLaiyar and pray to him to obviate all sorts of problems”. Then as he grows
up, the moment he hears the words, ‘sarva vigna upa saantaye’, he knows that we are praying to our PiLLaiyar.
The word ‘vishnu’ in the sloka is indicative of the very closeness between the uncle and nephew!

Seelam – The primordial rhythm & fundamentals
Now, let us get into some real heavy stuff - Mathematics (Ganitham – the study of Ganam) that governs this
rhythm and harmonics. My first concern is how to make it easily digestible for an average individual who hates
Math? So I shall take the easiest route that I know. I shall first explain the concept, then the actual Math part of it
and then go to the philosophy and significance of the same. Later we shall look at how these are codified in
nature and our scriptures and available in front of our eyes which we have failed to recognize.
Let us be clear about the following terminologies like Progression, Proportion, root, Diagonal and Pythagoras
theorem:


Let us take a series as follows: 2, 4, 8, 16, 32…. In this we need to be clear about what is Progression and
proportion. As many of you know that whole series is a geometric progression where the next number in
the series is a function of the current number and a multiple. This multiple here is 2, so that 2*2 = 4, 4*2
= 8 and so on. This multiple or the constant is called as proportion. You derive the value of the
proportion by dividing the number by its previous number – (n+1)/n : (n+2)/(n+1). Hope this is clear.



We know that a square has 4 equal sides. Each side of a square is called as “root” and the line that
connects the 2 opposite ends is called as ‘Diagonal”. In the figure below sides AB, BC, CD, DA are called as
“Root”. Lines AC, BD are called as ‘Diagonal”.

Figure 19; Square


Figure 20: Pythagoras theorem

Pythagoras theorem – This theorem gave us the formula to calculate the sides of a right angle triangle as
given above. If you are not familiar with this, then please understand that if you know any 2 sides of the
triangle the 3rd side can be calculated by the formula given above. I am not going to focus on the
argument that this theorem was available in Indian scriptures before the Greek mathematician gave it.
Let’s look at the concepts and not which civilization gets credit as of now.

Since the fundamental structure is a square in 2D and Cube in 3D and also in the process of evolution one
becomes many, let’s ask ourselves the following questions:



How one square does create another square which is larger in size, progressively? What is the
progression and proportion in this series?
How one cube does create shapes which are polygonal (Hexagon, Octagon, decagon, dodecagon etc)
progressively? What is the progression and proportion in this series?

Now let us see Figure 21 where and consider the square ABGF. You can enlarge the image to see the alphabets
clearly. Now as we know sides AB, BG, GF, AF are called “root” – remember this well and let us assume the
© Copyrights reserved Kanchi Periva Forum – www.periva.proboards.com & www.periva.org

smallest root possible is unity and hence each root is of unit length. AB=BG=GF=AF=1. Area of this square = 1*1 =
1.

Figure 21; Square

Figure 22: Cube

Line AG is called as the “diagonal” and as per Pythagoras theorem the length of AG should be √2. AG =
√(AF2+GF2). So to summarize the root of the square ABGF is 1 and the diagnol is √2.
Now consider a larger square AGHJ, here AG, GH, HJ, AJ are the sides and hence called as root. AH, GJ are the
diagonal in the 2nd square. We know AG = √2, then AH = GJ = 2 as per Pythagoras theorem. To sum up the root of
the square AGHJ is √2 and the diagonal is 2. Area of this square is 2.
If you look at the ratio root/diagonal (root to diagonal ratio) of both the squares it is 1/√2 and √2/2 which results
in 1/√2. This will progressively hold good. The magic proportion in this progression is √2.
What we can infer from this is if we consider a progression of squares from a unit square to larger squares, then
the proportion of the progression is √2. But before we jump into its philosophical significance let’s answer the
second question.
Consider the cube above whose side is of unit length. We know a cube is made of squares. We know ABCD is a
square of length (root) =1 and diagonal = AC = √2. If we want to find out the length of the diagonal of the cube
which is AE, then ACE is a right angle triangle with AC = √2. And CE =1 and hence AE = √3.
What we can infer from this is if we consider a progression of cubes from a unit cube to larger ones, then the
proportion of the progression is √3.
I am going to handle the significance of √2 and √3 in the next part.

Periva’s voice: Ancient Mathematical Treatises
Jyotisa, as we have seen, consists of three sections. There was a
scholarly man in the Matha who was particularly learned in
this science. We wished to honour him with a title and
decided upon "Triskandha-Bhaskara". "Skandha" literally
means a big branch springing from the trunk of a tree. The
three skandhas of Jyotisas are : siddhanta, hora and samhita.
The siddhanta-skandha deals with arithmetic, trigonometry,
geometry and algebra. The higher mathematics developed by
the west in later centuries is found in our ancient Jyotisa.
Arithmetic, called "vyakta-ganita" in sanskrit, includes
addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. "Avyaktaganita" is algebra. "Jya" means the earth and "miti" is method
of measurement. "Jyamiti" evolved with the need to measure
the sacrificial place :"geometry" is derived from this word.
The "geo" in geography is from "jya". There is a mathematical
exercise called "samikarana" which is the same as "equation".
The sixth Anga of the Vedas, Kalpa (I will speak about it later ), has a great deal to do with the fifth,
that is Jyotisa. Kalpa has a section on "sulba-sutras". These sutras mention the precise
measurements of the "yajnavedi" (sacrificial altar).
The character of the yajnabhumi is called "cayana". The sulba- sutras deal with a number of cayanas
like, for instance, the one shaped like Garuda. They tell us how to construct a brick-kiln ---the
number of bricks required for the cayana of such and such shapes. The siddhanta-skandha is used in
all this.
There is an equation in the Apastamba sulba sutras which could not be proved until recently.
Westerners had thought it to be faulty merely as they could not solve it. Now they accepted it as
right. That Indians had taken such great strides in mathematics, thousand of years ago has caused
amazement in the West. There are a number of old equations still to be solved.
Our sastras mention branches of mathematics like "rekhaganita, "kuttaka", "angapaka", etc.
"Avyakta-ganita" is also called "bijaganita".
Eight hundred years ago there lived a great mathematician called Bhaskaracarya. An incident in his
life illustrates how relentless destiny is. Bhaskaracarya had a daughter called Lilavati. The great
astrologer that he was, he found that she had "mangalya-dosa" in her horoscope, but he felt
confident that he could change his daughter's destiny, as foreshadowed by the stars, with his
ingenuity and resourcefulness, as an astrologer.
He decided to celebrate Lilavati's marriage during a lagna in which all the planets would be in
positions favourable to the bride. This should, he thought, ensure that Lilavati would remain a
"dirgha-sumangali".
In those days there were no clocks as we have today. A water-pot was used to measure time. It
© Copyrights reserved Kanchi Periva Forum – www.periva.proboards.com & www.periva.org

consisted of an upper as well as a lower part. The water in the upper receptacle would trickle down
through a hole into the lower container. The lower part was graduated according to the unit of time
then followed ---nazhikai (nadika), one sixtieth of a day or 24 minutes. So the time of day was
calculated by observing the level of the water in the lower container. ("Water-clock" and "hourglass" are English names for such an apparatus. Since water evaporates quickly sand was used
instead. )
According to the custom then prevailing, Lilavati's marriage was to be celebrated when she was still
a child. On the appointed day, she sat beside the water--clock and bent over it fascinated by the
apparatus. As she fumbled around a pearl from her nose--stud got loosened and fell into the
apparatus lodging itself in its hole. The flow of water into the lower receptacle was reduced.
So what the clock indicated as the hour fixed for the marriage was not the right one---the auspicious
hour had passed. Nobody including Lilavati, had noticed the pearl dropping into the water-clock.
When they came to know about it, it was too late. They realised that destiny could not be overcome.
Later Bhaskaracarya wrote a mathematical treatise and named it "Lilavati" after his daughter. The
father taught his widowed daughter mathematics and she became highly proficient in the subject.
Lilavati deals with arithmetic, algebra, etc.
It is a delightful book in which the problems are stated in verse as stories. Bhaskaracarya also wrote
the Siddhanta-Siromani which deals with how the positions and movement of the heavenly bodies
are determined.
We learn the text of an edict in the Pracinalekhamala that a Gurjara (Gujarat) king had made an
endowment to popularise the works of Bhaskaracarya.
Parts 7, 8, 9 and 10 of Euclid's Geometry are believed to be lost. All the 12 books on mathematics in
Sanskrit are still available. "Making additions several times is multiplication; carrying out
subtraction several times is division. " We remain ignorant of such easy methods of calculations
dealt with in our mathematical texts.
Varahamihira lived several years before Bhaskaracarya, that is about 1, 500 years ago. He wrote a
number of treatises including the Brhat-Samhita and the Brhajjatika. The first is a digest of many
sciences, its contents being a wonderful testimony to the variety of subjects in which our forefathers
has taken strides. Brhajjatika is all about astrology.
Aryabhata, famous for his Aryabhatiya-Siddhanta, also lived 1, 500 years ago. The vakya--ganita now
in use is said to be based on his Siddhanta. Varahamihira and Aryabhata are much acclaimed by
mathematicians today.
All these books on mathematics also deal with the movements of the celestial bodies. There are
seven "grahas" according to the ancient reckoning--the five planets and the sun and the moon.
Rahu and Ketu are called "chaya -grahas" (shadow planets) and their orbits are opposite of the sun's
and the moon's.

Seelam – Significance of √2 & √3
Let’s look at the significance of √2 and √3 but before that let’s capture the philosophical significance of
Progression and Proportion:


The whole world is conceptualized as wave harmonics of the primordial rhythm with a progression and
proportion. Philosophically the Proportion which does not change / which is constant is the immutable
component and the progression which changes / is volatile is called as the Mutuable component in the
process of evolution. The whole universe is the progression and God is the proportion. So if I know the
God’s proportion and the formula behind it I can create anything in this universe including a universe.
This secret is called as the Brahma Vidya / Sree Vidya (Knowledge of Brahman, Sree) in Indian texts. What
we are going to see further are very minor parts of the Brahma Vidya. 



In the last part we saw, that the primordial square multiplied itself to be a larger square (progression of
squares) using the proportion √2. The diagonal of the square 1 (ABCD) forms the root of Square 2
(AGHJ). This is very profound if you get the concept.



If we consider square 1 as the cause then its diagonal is the effect. This diagonal is the root for the next
square (AGHJ) and hence the effect of Square 1 is the cause of Square 2, this cause results in square 2’s
diagonal which is its effect and this is how the progression or evolution happens. If you can see
glimpses of Cause and effect cycle and the famous law of Karma in this analogy then you can pat yourself.




A square halved by the diagonal (square 1 with area 1) produces a square twice its area (square 2, area =
2). The mystery of biological growth from cellular division or the different musical notes from the base
tone is contained in this.



Robert Lawlor in his book “Sacred Geometry” very nicely puts it as the root of a plant (like the root in a
square) is causative and embedded in the earth (and embedded in the square). These are very heavy and
profound concepts just let it sink into you.



When you divide the full height of the human being considering the total height as unity then belly as
called as Hara in Japanese, Dantein in Chinese, Nabhi in India which is below the navel will measure (2√2) from the soles of the feet to belly and (√2 -1) from navel to the head. In Yoga, Zen and Chinese
meditation techniques this point corresponds to the transformative and generative aspects of the
individual that involves rooting techniques for self transmutation. So Lao Tzu said, “To seek the root is
the goal”.



√2 signifies the power of multiplicity. Hence the Generative aspect of this rhythm is attributed to √2.
This represents the principle of transformation.



Remember √2 is a proportion in the progression of squares and a square does not become a higher form.
We have seen that the diagonal of the cube (sides of unit length) is √3. It is this √3 which divides the
volume form of a cube and the diagonal of the cube becomes a root for the higher shapes like
pentagon, hexagon etc.



Hence √3 signifies the formative power of the rhythm while √2 signifies the generative power of the
nature.

We will touch the same using Vesica Piscis in the next part which shall take us to √5 and the golden mean . I am
not going to touch upon important topics like Gnomic spirals and the relation between various progressions and
hence I would request you to Google them if you are interested.
PS:
There are many books on this topic and I would recommend “Sacred Geometry – Philosophy & Practice” by
Robert Lawlor which I found easy to read and understand.
You tube and Internet is replete with tons of images, articles and videos on this topic and you can learn a great
deal from them.

Periva’s voice: Concept of Maya
In the Mangala Sloka(invocation) to this Beeja Ganita(algebra),
Bhaskaracharya says that supreme which is Infinite, does not
suffer diminution when creating the world out of Himself, or gain
addition when the created word attains Laya(merger) in Him.
For, if the addition of even a fraction can make a difference to the
infinite, then it could not have been infinite before such addition.
Similarly infinite cannot become less than the infinite when any
thing is taken away from it. The Infinite is poorna, full and
limitless Supreme. The Prapancha (Universe) which is infinitely
varied, is also limitless Supreme, the limitless Supreme will
remain intact.
Therefore, if this Poornam (the infinitely varied form of the
objective Prapancha) is taken away from that Poornam (the
subject which is Infinite), that Poornam, the subject Infinite,
alone will remain.
This may be illustrated mathematically as follows : if 2 is divided by 2, the quotient is 1. With 2 as the
dividend, if the divisor is progressively reduced as 1, 1/2, or 1/4 etc., the quotient will respectively
be 2, or 4, or 8,etc., Thus the divisor becomes less and less, the quotient will become more and more.
When the divisor is the least, that is infinitesimal, approximating to Zero, the quotient will be
infinity. This is known as the Khaharam - Kha standing for Aakas, signifying poojyam (zero), haaram,
meaning taking away or dividing.
How do we verify the correctness of an arithmetical question in division? We multiply the quotient
with the divisor and check whether the resulting is equivalent to the dividend given in the question.
In this Khaharam, or division.
In this Khaharam, or division of any number by zero, the number that is divided stands for the
Prapancha 9the pluralistic universe of infinite variety), the divisor, zero or Poojyam, which in
mathematical language is an indefinable factor, approximating to nothingness, stands for Maya, and
the quotient is the Infinite, that is Brahman.
For the purpose of creating the Prapancha, which is dividend, Brahman , which is the quotient ,
multiplies itself by Maya, which is divisor. Even as I divided by Zero, or 2 divided by Zero, or 3
divided by Zero, will give the same quotient, when the Infinite is multiplied by Zero, it is
undeterminate, and therefore, it can take the values 1,2,3 etc., which are Bheda sankhyas, or
numbers connoting differences, standing for the plurality of the world.
The Upanishad says that the One Absolute determined to become many, and for that purpose. It
associated itself with Maya, and become Many.
When this Absolute Infinite multiplied Itself in association with Maya, which is tantamount to zero, it
appears as 1,2,3,4 etc., the several objects of this Prapancha. But when any number is multiplied by
Maya. The dividend, which is the plurality of the prapancha is the Infinite variety.
© Copyrights reserved Kanchi Periva Forum – www.periva.proboards.com & www.periva.org

The quotient, which is Brahman, is Real Akhanda and Ananta. In the Saanti Mantra, Poornam adah is
the quotient , Absolute Infinity, and Poornam idam is the dividend, pluralistic Infinity.
Advaita anantam multiplied by Poojyam is Dvaita anantam. if the latter is divested of is Maya -- by a
process of Khaharam-dividing by Poojyam which is Maya -- we get the Advaita anantam.
Maya multiplies the formless Infinite which is One only without a second , into an infinity of finite
forms. Th One alone, that is real, has value; the Many, which are products of Maya, are like Maya,
without ultimate value.
So Brahman is not affected either by diminution from It (creation or Srsti) or by the addition to It
(merger or Laya) of Prapancha, which has no ultimate value.
The Divine Mother is the Creative Principle of the universe, the Maya Sakti aspect of Brahman, which
makes the Infinite One appear as the Infinite Many.
She presents the formless Supreme in finite forms. It is only by her grace that one can transcend the
Maya and obtain the advaitic realisation of the One without a second.

Seelam – Vesica Piscis, √5, & Golden Mean ()
If you don’t know what is vesica piscis, please google and you would find it interesting. I am not going to explain it
here and I would focus on the summary and aspects which are often left out. The philosophical aspect of Vesica
Piscis, is a rotating point becomes as circle of unity. Two circle of unity (with its radius as unity) interacting /
intersecting each other in a perfect manner offers an overlapping area which is considered to be sacred and
fundamental to all the geometric forms in the universe. We will first see how √2, √3 & √5 are part of this Vesica
Piscis.
Please look at 2 circles who radius is unity and AB = 1, intersecting
as per the diagram. The overlapping area ABCD is the Vesica Piscis
and we can see √2, √3 & √5 all part of this Vesica Piscis.
ABPQ and ABRS are 2 squares and the side of the square is 1. √5 is
as significant as √2 and √3. In the diagram here √5 is the diagonal of
the rectangle PQRS / diagonal of 2 squares – one below the other.
Figure 23; Vesica Piscis
√5 is the regenerative factor that binds 2 squares or that factor that transcends two worlds or the bonding factor
for 2 cosmic entities. This √5 shall take us to the most important ratio which is the Golden mean or the God’s
ratio.
But before that let me share what stuck my mind when I was engrossed with Vesica Piscis and √3. Look at the
pictures below. These are pictures of forehead marks of Hindu Brahmins sects called Iyengars and their supreme
deity is Narayana. I correlated the striking similarity of the rectangle around the Vesica piscis and Iyengar’s
namam. You just have to imagine the 2 overlapping circles are the right and left side of the face with the Vesica
Piscis starting from the top tip of the nose. To me the formative principle of √3 is in line with the “Bhootha krut”
and “Vishwa karma manu stvashtha” aspects of Maha Vishnu as per Vishnu sahasranamam. I had a good laugh
on this correlation.

Figure 24; Iyengar Namam 1
(Courtesy: Internet)

Figure 25: Iyengar Namam 2
(Courtesy: Internet)

Coming to the Golden mean, If you have not heard about it, just Google or here is a quick link
http://www.goldennumber.net/. Some of you might be even have fatigue repeatedly reading and listening about
it, like I do. Hence I am not going to rewrite what is widely available. But let’s look at the philosophical aspect of
it, its relation to √5 and its manifestation.
Now so far in √2, √3 & √5 what we have seen is how Unity evolves as many. But if I am interested in geometrically
dividing the Unity so that this proportion evolves as unity then how do I do it?

Consider a line of unit length and also consider
two segments a, b so that a+b =1.

Let a+b =1

a

b

A and B are such that it has to fulfill this condition
of
Proportionality that a/b : b/1.
(Figure 26: Line and)

This means what ‘a” is to “b”, is the same as what “b” is to the whole length which is 1.
Mathematically resolving this equation a/b : b/1, hence b2 = a and hence b= √a. This means a + √a = 1. The
answer to this equation is only one value which is called the Golden mean / God’s ratio denoted by  =
1.6180339… and a = 1/. Philosophically it is the division of unity and the only possible creative duality within
the unity.
You may ask as to why unity is not divided into 2 equal parts and why is should be 1/ (0.6180339..). This is
effectively answered by our Upanishad “Whether we know it or not, all things take their existence from that
which perceives them”. Adi Shankara said “the universe is an illusion / maya” because it is what we perceive.
We tend to ignore them as philosophy or superstition.
But let’s look at it scientifically as we understand. When the unity is divided into equal parts there is no
asymmetry and difference and hence there is no perceptual universe. An asymmetric division is needed to
create the dynamics necessary for progression and extension of unity.
Let’s summarize our understanding again:







√2 – the generative component and a multiplying factor creates multiple squares from a unity of
square.
√3 – the formative component that creates multidimensional polygonal shapes from a cube.
√5 – the regenerative component or the binding component that transcends and binds both the
worlds.
 - Golden mean or the God’s ratio, which is an evolutionary principle that is guided from within and an
indisputable mathematical evidence of the conscious evolution of this Universe.
 - Is a self-similar variable which can be used to derive Unity and it is the only proportion by which the
Primordial rhythm maintains it perpetual oscillation to sustain this universe.
Relation between  and √5 is,  = (√5+1)/2

© Copyrights reserved Kanchi Periva Forum – www.periva.proboards.com & www.periva.org

Now let’s geometrically as to how  and √5
are intricately linked. Consider the Pentagon
picture whose side is of unit length. Ie.
AB = BC = CD = DE=AE = 1 and
EG = FB = CG = DF = 1 and
EB =  = 1.61803399 and BG = 1/ =
0.61803399 and hence all the ratios like AG =
AF = EF = GB = 1/.
Also FG = 1/2, which means EB = EF+FG+GB =
1/+1/+1/2
Also GI = 1/2 and GJ = 1/3

(Figure 27: Pentagon & , Courtesy: Internet)
If you are interested more please check out the Fibonacci series and its relation to . The importance of 5 is
dominant in every living organism while 6 and 8 are the characteristic of mineral and inanimate structures. It
used to be rule of thumb that any plants / flowers which has 5 petals is an edible plant and hence 5 and
pentagon are the symbols of life which contains the God’s ratio or the golden mean.
Now let’s also understand how a √5 is related to √2 and √3. If we consider a right angle triangle with the base of
√2 and height of √3 or vice versa then the hypotenuse is √5. Now let me draw the connection between √2, √3, √5,
 and π. If you think they are all some random numbers which cannot be fixed to their 10th decimal and not
related to each other, just see the following relationship.
π = 2 x 6/5

or alternatively

 = (√π * √5) /(√2*√3)

This is the binding factor. I shall produce below some pictures which are aligned based on pentagon and the web
is replete with them for you to understand more.
These 2 parts were little heavy and I shall move to easier aspects on the universal rhythm from next part. The
point I was trying to make is that everything in this universe is subject to a proportion and its fractals and let’s see
the manifestation of it in our daily life.

The positions of Hindu classical dance (Bharat Natyam) describe geometric relationships from the axis of the body
and the alignment of center of gravity at “hara” invoking rooting and divine power of transformation. In Hinduism
“hara” is one of the names of Lord Shiva as in “Hara Hara Shankara”

Periva’s voice: Signs & Marks
If we call ourselves Hindus we must bear certain
external marks, outward symbols.
The boy scouts have a uniform of their own. Army and
navy men are distinguished by certain insignia. There
are number of divisions in police force.
Even though their functions will not change if they
wear one another's uniforms or badges, there is a strict
rule with regard to their dress and insignia.
The policeman's cap must not be worn by the sailor.
There is a certain discipline and orderliness among all
these forces.
This discipline as well as orderliness is essential in
religion also. That is why different jatis and different
asramas have different functions and signs.
According to the dharmasastras we must wear the
dhoti or the sari in such and such a way or apply the
mark to the forehead in a particular manner.
All this is not meant for social discipline alone. There is a high purpose, that of purifying our inner
life.
The court attendant has a tavali. The officials do not have it. Is it sensible to why? But we do not take
the same attitude with regard to the different signs and marks assigned to the people according to
their vocations and family customs. We make a noise in the name of equality.
Even though we remain divided in the matter of vocations - which indeed is for the welfare of the
entire community-we are of one heart. This is the ideal behind the social arrangement in which
different jatis are assigned different rites and external symbols, these in keeping with their natural
qualities and callings.
There is no high or low in all this. But we keep fighting among ourselves imagining that there is.
Now we have come to such a pass that nobody wears any of the external marks of our religion. At the
same time, we are not ashamed of wearing other types of signs or badges. To wear those marks that
bring uplift of the Self we are ashamed.
We dismiss all religious marks and symbols as part of superstition. But those who want to proclaim
themselves to be reformers don a particular type of cap or upper cloth and these external trappings
are given greater importance than symbols of a divine nature.

  • 3. Shri Kanchi Maha Periva Thiruvadigal Saranam Foreword Hari Om! We are pleased to bring you the Fifteenth edition of the e-book series from the Kanchi Periva Forum. As you might be aware, we have been regularly publishing free ebooks with a view to disseminate knowledge about the Hindu tradition & culture, and more importantly carry the message of Sri Maha Periva to our members by setting His discourses within the appropriate topic and in the right context for the readers to read and relish the same. This month, we are continuing with the series we commenced in April 2013 – on the topic of “Supreme Scientific Secrets from ancient India”. The base content of the original writing is provided by Sri Raguram Gopalan, one of our respected members and an excellent thinker. We have great pleasure in bringing to you the excellent work of Sri Raguram Gopalan, which is interspersed now with ample dose of Periva’s discourses on those topics, so that you can enjoy the beautiful and thoughtful messages by our Nadamaadum Deivam (Walking God), Sri Maha Periva, extolling the deep scientific aspects, and greatness of our own religion. As in the previous editions, you would get to read the original writings of Sri Raguram Gopalan, coupled with Periva’s articles in English to the extent available. To ensure that our Tamil readers enjoy His language and style of speak, we are providing an appendix of all those discourses in Tamil as well at the end of the ebook with appropriate links internally placed. As has been our practice, we are adding Periva’s rare photos within the book for you to preserve and treasure for times to come. We are sure that this Ebook will be extremely useful to you and request you to forward this to all your friends and relatives. For those who are not familiar about our website and forum, we welcome you to visit http://www.periva.org/ for a collection of rare videos and complete online library of upanyasams of Sri Maha Periva. If you are not already a member of our Forum and received this ebook from any of your friends, please also register on the forum http://www.periva.proboards.com to stay updated on devotees’ experiences and to receive our regular free publications. We humbly submit this e-book edition at the lotus feet of Shri Maha Periva. • 4. About the Author Sri Raguram Gopalan Sri Raguram Gopalan was born in Chennai as the first child to Mrs. & Mr. Gopalan Venkataraman Iyer in Chennai. His grandfather Sri. Venkatarama Sastrigal was a renowned Sanskrit and Vyakarna teacher in Kumbakonam Raja Patashala. He did his schooling in Chennai and Kumbakonam. Sri Raguram currently works in a private company as Senior Vice President and is a MBA Gold medalist with dual specialization in Marketing and Systems & an Electronics Engineering graduate. He is a voracious reader, blogger and is interested in Indian Philosophy, Siddha principles, History, Music & Yoga. He is a black belt holder in his karate school, a Pranic healer and student of Tai Chi. Since 2001 his universe revolves around Priya (wife) and Aishwarya & Adityaa (Kids) and is currently settled in Bangalore. You can visit his blog @ http://ragsgopalan.blogspot.in/ From the Author “Curious by nature, in a life so uncertain Thirsty for the truth, which is so certain I sought for some water in our Vedas ‐ the fountain Though I can’t understand fully what it contains I am amazed & speechless with what I could ascertain This is just a speck of dust from that golden mountain Thankful to my family for helping me in what I could attain Grateful for the wisdom and works from all the chieftains Wish I repay every atom of it through my gratuitous tearstains” This effort is to share what I read, understood and enjoyed about the scientific aspects in ancient India which are codified in our language, arts and in 1000s of temples. The quotes and examples are predominantly in Tamil but I have tried to give the meaning which can enable a reader to grasp the meaning and progress. Any shortcomings you notice are purely reflective of my abilities to understand and express. There was not even an iota of intention to hurt any sentiments or beliefs of others. I initially thought that I shall reproduce a prayer from one of the books which I had read but at one fine moment I decided to capture my feelings in my own words. So I scribbled few lines in English summing up my feelings as above, few lines for the Sage of Kanchi and a prayer in Tamil with its meaning in English. You may understand this prayer better after you read this book. Please feel free to copy and reproduce in whichever form - see how much of this can you share to dispel the ignorance. The more you share the better. If I have acknowledged any books or authors please recognize them and ensure that you either buy their books or donate to their cause. They deserve all the credits. © Copyrights reserved Kanchi Periva Forum – www.periva.proboards.com & www.periva.org Page 4 of 49

Invocation A Divine Soul With a noble goal Walked this earth When divinity was dearth Beyond any treasure's worth To avoid our death & rebirth Seek His guidance & grace For He shall ever embrace! Shatkona Yantra - one of the many ancient secrets Created by Sri Bhogar Siddhar currently in a temple in Sri Lanka, taken once in a year for rituals, believed to emanate supreme subtle divine energies. © Copyrights reserved Kanchi Periva Forum – www.periva.proboards.com & www.periva.org Page 5 of 49
  • 6. Periva’s voice: Advice for Retired Pensioners Group of Retired Pensioners: What should we do? Sri Maha Periva: Who are you all? Group of Retired Pensioners: We are pensioners. Sri Maha Periva: I was waiting for you only all this time. You alone are the Kalpaka (wish-yielding) trees for our nation. If you will, our country will turn into gold. If you keep weeping with family worries and anxiety, all can only weep. You become ripe Kalpaka trees and provide shade and sweet food to the flying birds, the crawling worms and all the animals in the intermediate region. Make them grow happily. If you are a retired engineer, provide food for at least two boys and train them to become equivalent of Overseer. Even if they do not get a degree, let them earn their living by working in private or with contractors or companies. We have consumed many items from this world. We have enjoyed many items. What have we done for the world in return? If we die without doing anything in return, we will be big robbers. Our life will go waste. To join and study in colleges and schools has now become impossible (like getting honey from beehive for a lame man). What will poor people do? Doing job is itself a lowly profession, devoid of freedom and self-respect. The way colleges and job procedures exist now; getting job is just a dream. Sometimes we day-dream that in case job is not available, everything will return to the earlier way of life of Aachara (conduct). That remains a daydream only so far. When job is not available, our boys fall for still more deplorable (avenues of) hotels, military, cinema etc. Once they go there, the purity of Aachara and food and lofty ideals, which our elders have protected for thousands of years, will all be as good as lost. Will our government protect us from such a danger? This is a matter which everyone should ponder over and come to a conclusion. There is no need to write much on this. We praise sky-high in every newspaper article and discourse about our arts, our culture, our philosophy etc. The first act of those of us who have ‘advanced’ is to destroy them. Though some of us abstain from destroying them directly, we watch the fun when they are being washed away in the river. When government is in the hands of such people, in order that our next generation does not degenerate further, those who have studied our culture and retired from service in various departments should help a little. © Copyrights reserved Kanchi Periva Forum – www.periva.proboards.com & www.periva.org Page 6 of 49
  • 7. This is nothing big for you. If four-five such pensioners get together, they can start a private tutorial college and an adjoining hostel. To those boys, who are interested in performing rituals as per their family traditions, a little of religious education and training in performance of rituals can also be given. Anybody who goes for studies as per family traditions is unable nowadays to have modern education. The good fortune to remove this deficiency is that of educated and retired pensioners. Such elders should undertake to render this service either alone or in groups. Let us not worry about degrees and diploma certificates; each of us can, as far as possible, help in poor boys getting knowledge of modern subjects without spoiling their Aachara and performance of rituals and in fact, growing them. Whether it be chemistry, physics, mathematics, literature, accounts, engineering, electrical engineering, physical education, weaving, machines etc., handicrafts, instrumental education in harmonium etc., there are experts who have retired from service and are available. Only if they spend at least a small part of their life for children of future generations, our children will escape from hotels and cinema. At least a little of self-respect and purity of food will remain. Even if some remaining elders offer to teach foundations of our culture, viz. Vedas, Sastras, old works like Kural, Sastra of Siddhas etc., nobody wishes to learn. On the other hand if there is offer to prepare children free of cost for examinations like London Matric, Cambridge Senior etc. or to teach for four years and arrange for direct admission in Form IV, a lot of children will come forward to utilise the offer. We can help such children by providing support for later life and at the same time by seeing that they do not swerve much from our true ancient culture. If there are occasional persons who study basic texts like Veda, those who are economically strong should help those who teach and those who learn these texts to live a life without difficulty. This alone is watering the plant at the root. Note: As per texts of Dharma, anybody can do this danam of Vidya. Those who are born a vipro should certainly do at least a little of this. All can do the dharma of protecting cows. But as per Gita, vaisyas should definitely do this. (‘Krishi Gourakshya vanijyam vaisya- karma svabhavajam’- Gita 18:44). A superior brahmana is one who learns all arts and, without using them for his own living, considers it his duty and purpose of life to teach them to those of the respective castes. Everyone should thus learn at least one art and teach it definitely to others. By everyone practising this method, it is possible to make the public comprehensive in knowledge and power, many times more than what a king could achieve. • 8. Shiva Lingam is not a Phallus If there is one part in the series I want you to read and talk about it with your friends then it is this topic. If I ask you as to what Shiva Linga stands for then more than 99% of the responses would be that it represents a Phallus symbolizing the male sex organ / creative energy with the female sex organ / creative energy - Yoni as the base and both together representing inseparability and totality in the process of creation. Nothing is more misunderstood and misquoted than this concept of Hinduism. Every idiot including me who has read few books about Hinduism thinks that they are experts of Indology / Vedic studies. The wisest of sages who gave us Vedas and Upanishads did not boast that it is their work. At the end of every work they acknowledged that they are telling us what they have been told by their ancestors. It is 155 trillion+ years of universal knowledge available today in the richest of the languages Tamil and Sanskrit. This cannot be accurately interpreted in a foreign language. Lest in the weakest of all languages - English. The other contributing factor to this misunderstanding has been the Sanskrit language or should I say the richness of the language. We have already noted that the same word can have multiple meanings. This is not limited to Sanskrit, but to all the languages. For example,    Sutra means thread, Aphorisms (the ability to express something in terse and concise manner). Ex. Kama sutra – the most understood of all the sutras. Brahma Sutra – The thread of consciousness in any form that runs in this universe – the most unheard of. Artha in Sanskrit means “meaning” and “wealth”, we have already seen this. As in Vaak-Artha and Artha Sastra (the science of wealth management). Same way Lingam means Symptom, Proof, Gender, Male sex organ etc. Hence it was very easy to get confused, associate the lingam with a Phallus and also to ignore the philosophy and the supreme science behind it. Even people who believed that it represented much more did not knew the philosophy and the science behind it. Let’s look at what it means. I am going to request you to kindly refer to both the pictures below: Figure 8 – reproduced here for convenience © Copyrights reserved Kanchi Periva Forum – www.periva.proboards.com & www.periva.org Page 8 of 49
  • 9. Figure 15 – Shiva Linga – Shape and Significance (Courtesy; Dr. Ganapathi Sthapati) We have already seen that the subtle energy is takes the form of a square and the gross energy takes the form of a circle with an in-between state it takes the shape of a tetrahedron and octagon. Now look at the Shiva lingam from the top. Its base is always a square and the top is always a circle. Figure 16 – Shiva Linga Figure 17 – Shiva Linga with shape of the God’s particle (Star) engraved. If I have to merge all the 3 shapes together and it naturally takes the shape of a Lingam with a round top. Shiva Linga captures the overall process of evolution in one form and shape - subtle to gross state – it encompasses every state of consciousness that is possible in this universe. Why the figure above states that Square shape is Sattvic, circle is Tamasic and the in between state is Rajasic? Let’s understand the definitions of all the three qualities.  Sattvic represents the perfect state of balance. When it is subtle it is luminescent and in a perfect state of resonant non-vibration. The energy levels were perfect so that the resultant vibration is nil and it is in absolute balance.  Tamasic state represents a state where the height of evolution is reached and hence it is farthest away from the core. This is a different explanation from the usual one available in the web and books. Let me © Copyrights reserved Kanchi Periva Forum – www.periva.proboards.com & www.periva.org Page 9 of 49
  • 10. explain this. The core is very subtle and the tamasic state is very gross and hence it is away from the core. Tamasic state then should be considered as the darkest state possible. Why? o o  Because the core is luminescent and if the gross state is farthest from the core hence it should be dark. This is the meaning behind the most famous statement ‘Tamasoma Jyothir gamaya”… take me from darkness to light. It is not about just your mind but about the entire being aspiring to become a light and merge with primordial light. There is no evolution possible beyond the Tamasic state and it has to devolve to reach its core / subtle state. Rajasic is a state where the pulsation has resulted in a rotational force and hence things are set into action. This represents the evolution process and hence associated with action. Then the natural next question is, if Shiva Lingam is associated with the entire spectrum of consciousness then we should see it associated the elements and the light. Isn’t?     There is a story in Indian Purana that Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva discussed who is the most powerful among them. Lord Shiva challenged Brahma and Vishnu to reach his head and feet respectively. Brahma tried to find Shiva’s head and Vishnu tried to reach Shiva’s feet, both of them failed. Most of us would have heard the story but would not have understood the philosophical and scientific significance. o o o o  Lord Shiva in the form of Linga stood there as a PILLAR OF LIGHT. This pillar of light is the Brahma Sutra / light of consciousness which spanned from the center of the galaxy (Hiranyagarba) to every being & non-being in the Universe. Brahma could not find the head because; Brahma is always associated with intelligence in Indian texts. Brahma gave the supreme wisdom - the Vedas and stands for Intelligence. He could not reach Shiva’s head signifies that Intelligence will not take you to God. Intelligence as an energy is too gross and cannot reach the most subtle state of light. Vishu represents earthly life – Rajasic in character – this is the tetrahedron & octagon state. He could not reach Lord Shiva’s feet signifying you cannot reach the core through actions. Lord Shiva in the form of Lingam is represented as one of the elements (Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Space) in the Hindu temples. If you read the following Upanishad quote, you can probably understand the meaning: na karmaNaa na prajayaa dhane na tyaagenaike amRitatvamaanashuH pareNa naakam nihitam guhaayaaM vibhraajate yadyatayo vishanti Not by work, not by progeny, not by wealth, they have attained Immortality. Some have attained Immortality by renunciation. That which the hermits attain is laid beyond the heaven; yet it shines brilliantly in the (purified) heart. © Copyrights reserved Kanchi Periva Forum – www.periva.proboards.com & www.periva.org Page 10 of 49
  • 11. And this quote also brilliantly articulates the luminescent nature of the Paramaanu: na tatra (not there) suryo bhaati (sun shines) na candra (moon does not) na tarakam (nor the stars) nema vidyuto (nor the lightning) bhanti (shines) kuta ayam agnih (how can fire shine) tam (that) eva (alone) bhantam (shines) anubhati (thereafter shines) sarvam (everything) tasya bhasa (in that light) sarvam idam vibhati (everything shines) The sun does not shine there, nor does the moon, nor the stars or the lightning, much less this fire (deepam). When He shines, everything shines after Him; by His light alone everything is illumined. The trick is to take the definition & meaning from Upanishads or any scripture and apply it to the God’s particle and the process of evolution and you would understand it perfectly. Many a times the concept of God & faith obscures our mind to look beyond and rationally think about it. It is not the problem of religion but our system of education which has ruined our thinking. Today the biggest challenge we have is to "Unlearn" than to learn. So to conclude:  Shiva Lingam does not represent Phallus. To represent male and female totality and inseparability Hindus do have Arthanareeswara and it is not represented through Lingam.  Shiva Lingam represents the Pillar of Light and the entire spectrum of consciousness. From the most subtle to the most gross.  It represents an in-between Guna / EGG state (between un-manifest and manifest) and hence it is formless with a form.  While Lord Nataraja represented the rhythmic pulsation of this Brahma sutra, the cosmic dance / the dance of the evolution, Shiva Lingam represents the primordial light itself in all its state of consciousness.  By this analogy, our body itself is a lingam with the visible body as the gross part at one end and the most subtle body which is invisible and is part of the primordial light at the other. Check out the picture below which represents most of the aspects we have discussed so far. • 13. Periva’s voice: Lingam is Aroopa Roopam So far we have seen Vinãyaka and his interactions with the trio who have sung the Thevãram songs and as to how it has been mentioned in their songs and how evidence is available in folk-lore of there being a 'ஓலமிட்ட விநாயகர்', பிள்ரையார்', 'செவி 'கூப்பிடு 'மாற்று உரைத்த பிள்ரையார்', and ொய்த்த விநாயகர்' in various temple towns, as proof of the various active roles played by PiLLaiyar in these incidents. In his writings MaNikka Vãsagar has not made a mention of PiLLaiyar anywhere. But they have had some intimate interactions. Let me tell you about one story which may not be known to most of you. In the olden times the best route from Pãndya Kingdom to the Sozha Desam was through this place known as Ãvudaiyãr Kovil aka Thirupperundurai. There was a place for transients to stay for the night, known as Chathiram in that town. Besides that was a PiLLaiyar statue installed in the open space without a roof over his head. Normally such PiLLaiyar in the open air without a roof overhead are known as a PiLLaiyar who preferred the sunlight and so had a name as, 'veyil uganda piLLaiyar' – 'சவய்யில் உகந்த பிள்ரையார்'! Here the PiLLaiyar had gone a step ahead and is said to have suffered the Sunlight for the sake of travellers on behalf of them – vicarious suffering and so was known as 'veyyil kãththa piLLaiyar' – 'சவய்யில் காத்த பிள்ரையார்'! You may be aware of the fact that Vãdavurãr as MãNikka Vãsagar was originally known, as the minister of the Pãndya Nãdu had gone to the Sozha Nãdu with funds for the purchase of horses. On the way he stayed in this Chathiram for a night. This 'Open Air Theatre PiLLaiyar' came in his dream. To demonstrate the theory of Adwaitam, he occurred in the dream as Brhma, Vishnu and Rudra, repeatedly morphing in to the other and told him, "You will construct a temple here in this very place for the Para Brhmam. Do not ask me as to how to construct a temple for the Brhmam which is without form and without any defining characteristics known as 'NirguNa'! I know that it is difficult to display a form for the formless. But it is essential to make people understand and comprehend the idea. Brhmam is 'aroopam' that is, formless. Other than Siva Lingam all the other statues of Gods are three© Copyrights reserved Kanchi Periva Forum – www.periva.proboards.com & www.periva.org Page 13 of 49
  • 14. dimensional! But Siva Lingam is neither form nor without form, a sort of an oblong sphere known as 'arooparoopa' – 'अरूपरूपं'! The base for the Siva Lingam is 'Ãvudaiyãr' – 'ஆவுரடயார்', indicative of Brhma, Vishnu and Rudra as the trio and above all that, (not exactly 'above' but beyond) the trio, is Sivam. This is a symbolic representation only. But people overly impressed by the 3 D picture as seen by the eyes and perceived by the mind think of it also as a form only! It is normal for common people to have such common ideas! But in such a big country like ours, there has to be at least one temple for the formless primordial Param, isn't it? A temple to encompass the idea of form and formless, GuNa and NirguNa, from here and now to infinity and eternity! So, having installed the 'Ãvudaiyãr', leave it without installing the Siva Lingam on top of it. The empty space does not mean that it is nullity but the inclusive principle of all existence! To enable people to understand, that God is a principle of all parts of existence, name the God here as the 'Ãtma Nãtha Swami'. Do not construct the temple straight away because I have told you. My Father will appear before you under the 'Kurundai' tree as the Guru and advice you to make you understand, comprehend and experience that the indwelling Ãtma in all living beings is none-else but the same Para Brhmam! After that you do the construction of the temple!" PiLLaiyar vanished after that. Thus from the statement of an elephant (the PiLLaiyar), money meant for purchase of horses was made use of for the construction of Ãvudaiyãr temple, that is the temple for Rishabha the bull! This word Ãvudaiyãr means the owner of all cattle. The 'Udaiyar' means the owner as given in the stone carvings in temples where it is mentioned in Tamil as 'Nageschchuram Udaiyar' – 'நாககச்சுைம் உரடயார்' and 'Raja Rajechchuram Udaiyar' – 'ைாஜ ைாகஜச்சுைம் உரடயார்'. It means that the Bull is the Pasupati for all cows and Siva is the Pasupati for all animals and human beings too, as after all human beings are also animals only! So, all of us put together are only animals and so are included in the word 'Pasu' and God as the Master for all of us is the 'Pasu Pati'! Thus the temple became 'Ãvudaiyãr Kovil' – 'ஆவுரடயார் ககாயில்'. If it is to be literally translated, we should be calling it the 'Bull Temple'! Not only the temple, but the temple town of 'Thirupperundurai' also came to be known by the name of the temple as 'Ãvudaiyãr Kovil' with the passage of time! AmbãL is also formless here as 'Yogãmbikai'! As both AmbãL and Swami have been left without a statue here, what MãNikka Vãsagar did was to install three PiLLaiyar statues at the entrance of the temple, to emphasise the fact that he appeared in three different forms as Brhma, Vishnu and Rudra as well as the Para Brhmam in the form of PiLLaiyar, I suppose! In the temples of many places, we do find two PiLLaiyar statues one in the outer entrance and one in the inner Prãhãram. Only here in the Ãvudaiyãr Kovil we are faced with a row of three PiLLaiyar statues abreast at the very entrance! • 15. The Primordial Circular Force – Ganapati & Maths In the last few decades the main stream western science has started accepting concepts like uncertainty principle, wave mechanics, quantum mechanics, and periodicity of the wave pattern. Most importantly it is about the fundamental wave pattern of any energy or matter and the harmonics of these wave patterns falling in a particular form and proportion which is dictated by geometry / mathematics. In all the western scientists are scratching their heads on the depths of science of the subtle aka the sacred spatial geometry. Most of the eastern philosophies have mastered this science and have codified these natural laws as a part of their religion, which is often dismissed as superstition. I already highlighted that in Tamil and Sanskrit the definition for science is “Knowledge of the space”. Modern science is moving in the right direction albeit very slow and they are trying to understand as to how elements are bonded within a molecule in addition to what elements constitute them. For example Chlorophyll molecule consists of Carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and magnesium (Mg at its core) has a complex 12 fold Pattern – just one such typical pattern which can convert sunlight into life substance. The same pattern exists in our RBC cells just that it has an iron at its core instead of magnesium. The understanding about the human body especially, “the spatial awareness that exists in each and every cell is due to the different sensory organs tuned at frequencies”, led the scientists to unravel the innate spatial geometry of life. Be it living, non-living beings, abstract forces like gravity, nuclear force, electromagnetism, heat, movement of astronomical bodies it does not matter what, everything in this universe adheres to a vibration / periodicity and is reducible to a number or a ratio. As a wise man said, “Mathematics is the language of gods”. This primordial rhythm & its harmonics are captured under the topic “Seelam” by Mayan in ancient tamil texts. Let’s look at this in detail. I have been finding it difficult to sequence the flow for this topic and let me try starting from the basics:  We know that the Paramaanu or God’s particle is a cube. This particle with the primordial vibration combines with other particles to create a shape. The Paramaanu combines in the multiples of 8 to evolve the next structure. Let us see the importance of 8 later, but remember 8 is the number for Lord Narayana and Om namo Narayana has 8 Aksharas.  What do you call a cube called in Tamil? It is called Ganam (கனம்). This also means heaviness, gravity, honor, dignity, abundance, plenty. To indicate it is a square cuboid they call it கன ெதுைம்.  The process of the addition of Paramaanu into bigger units is called as Ganam (கணம், गणं). In Tamil both the Cube and the additive resultant are called as Ganam and the only difference being that in Cube it uses a small “na” (ன) as an alphabet. In the additive process / resultant it uses a Big “na”(ண). The big “na” signifies that due to the additive process the small (na) becomes big (na).  This additive process starts because of the first rhythmic circular force also called as a Suzhi (சுழி) in tamil which means “loop”. © Copyrights reserved Kanchi Periva Forum – www.periva.proboards.com & www.periva.org Page 15 of 49
  • 16.  Here comes the beauty. The Lord of or the energy associated with this additive force (Ganam) is called as Ganapathi (கணபதி, गणपती). Note this is the bigger “na” used and not smaller “na”. He is associated with the first circular force - Suzhi (and hence he takes the first honor in any Vedic ritual. This means Lord Ganapati is the first process in the evolution and everything has to start with him. Even if it is Lord Shiva or Vishnu it does not matter, the very first honor goes to the Lord of Ganas. Many Indians when they start writing (atleast few decades back) they first start with this symbol at the top of the page before anything for a successful completion of that activity.  If I add my own inferences to the above with a caveat that everything else I have written have a solid back up mostly from our own study of languages (as you can yourself see) and our scriptures. o The symbol above signifies that what was “a point” with untouched / non-interacting energies / resulted in the primordial first circular force out of a pulse and also signifying that every circular force shall also collapse back to a point. o Also the bigger / heavier things are formed or created by its smallest unit and hence symbolically the heavier ones are carried by the smaller units. To signify this may be a god in the form of an elephant is carried by a mouse.  Now you know why every ritual starts with this Sloka to Ganapathi: o “GanAnAm tva Ganapati gum Havamahe, Kavim Kavinam Upamasra vastamam Jyestharajam Brahmanam Brahmanaspat aana Srnvan nuti bhissi dasadanam” This means “May you the Lord of Ganas, Ganapati",... . so it goes.  Now what do we call the study of this additive force - Ganas? Mathematics – Ganith / Ganitham (கணிதம், गणणत ).  So we Indians have codified: o the primordial God’s particle as Paramaanu or microbode or Lord Shiva, o the rhythmic movement of the pillar of light as Lord Nataraja, o the first circular force as the symbol for Lord Ganapathi, o the lord of the additive force as Lord Ganapthi and o the Study of this additive force which leads to the formation of everything in the universe is Mathematics in Sanskrit and Tamil. o Every possible state of consciousness and manifestation is represented in Shiva Linga o We will see that the multiples of 8 in which the additive force moves is codified as Lord Narayana or Vishnu and the five state manifestation process as the five letters associated with Lord Shiva. Just forget that these names are the names of the Hindu gods, and tell me one religion or philosophy or one branch of science in this world which can capture the nature’s primordial secret in this way and codify it for the common benefit of the world and carry it for thousands / millions of years. These are just a start and please wait for the other interesting aspects to unfold. © Copyrights reserved Kanchi Periva Forum – www.periva.proboards.com & www.periva.org Page 16 of 49
  • 17. Periva’s voice: Vinayakar Now about this sloka starting with ‘suklaambaradaram’, which we all say to start with any of our religious and ceremonial ‘karya’, though thought to be addressed towards PiLLaiyar; does not contain any reference to PiLLaiyar, surprisingly! None of his names such as, GaNapathy, GaNesa, Vinayaka, and or words such as, Gowrisuta or Sivatmaja; have been used in the sloka. His ‘vahanam’ (carrier – mooshika the rodent rat), or favourite weapon (paashahastha), or favourite dish (modaka) find a mention in that sloka! None of his physical identifications such as, gajamukha (elephant faced), ekadanta (whose one tusk had been broken thus giving him the name of ‘single tusked’); or lambhodara (whose tummy is big); are referred! Not mentioning even a single one of his famous exploits! The sloka is as follows:- “shuklaambaradharam, vishnum, sasi varNam, chaturbhujam I prasanna vadanam dyaayet sarva vigna upa saantaye II” ‘shuklaambaradharam’ = wearing white dress; so do all males. Those who wear other colours are referred as ‘pitambaradhari’ or ‘raktambaradhari’ wearing yellow or red dress respectively. So, the first word does not refer to only PiLLaiyar! Next word is, ‘vishnum’! This means, ‘Omni present’, especially known as a name for PiLLaiyar’s uncle and not him! So, the nephew gets the name of his maternal uncle and we also are reminded of him only and not PiLLaiyar! Next is, ‘sasi varNam’ = of the colour of the moon; so is Easwara and Saraswathy! This is followed by ‘chatur bhujam’ = four armed; this is the common characteristic of all deities! So, again it does not necessarily refer to PiLLaiyar! Then the sloka talks of, ‘prasanna vadanam’ = smiling faced; can you think of a God who is not having a pleasant smiling face? Except for KaaLi, Nrusimha Murthy, Veera Bhadra and such Ugra Swaroopa-s, all Gods are pleasant faced only! But, more than any other God, in one way, it will be agreed that PiLLaiyar has a smiling face dripping happiness, with a broad countenance of a baby elephant! For each of the above five words, we have to knock on the fore-head with our knuckles, known in Tamil as ‘kuttik-koLvadhu’- five times! Then we have to do ‘dhyaayet’ that is think deeply of, ‘sarva vigna upa saantaye’! Having not mentioned a word of his name or any of the known characteristics, now you have to deeply think about that special ability of that God, who can get all your trouble cancelled! That is PiLLaiyar! Before starting on any venture or endeavour, think of him and pray – say this sloka and at least once do the ‘kuttu’! Even before the child grows up to be able to learn any of these sloka-s by heart, the child is told, “Son, before starting anything, think of PiLLaiyar and pray to him to obviate all sorts of problems”. Then as he grows up, the moment he hears the words, ‘sarva vigna upa saantaye’, he knows that we are praying to our PiLLaiyar. The word ‘vishnu’ in the sloka is indicative of the very closeness between the uncle and nephew! • 18. Seelam – The primordial rhythm & fundamentals Now, let us get into some real heavy stuff - Mathematics (Ganitham – the study of Ganam) that governs this rhythm and harmonics. My first concern is how to make it easily digestible for an average individual who hates Math? So I shall take the easiest route that I know. I shall first explain the concept, then the actual Math part of it and then go to the philosophy and significance of the same. Later we shall look at how these are codified in nature and our scriptures and available in front of our eyes which we have failed to recognize. Let us be clear about the following terminologies like Progression, Proportion, root, Diagonal and Pythagoras theorem:  Let us take a series as follows: 2, 4, 8, 16, 32…. In this we need to be clear about what is Progression and proportion. As many of you know that whole series is a geometric progression where the next number in the series is a function of the current number and a multiple. This multiple here is 2, so that 2*2 = 4, 4*2 = 8 and so on. This multiple or the constant is called as proportion. You derive the value of the proportion by dividing the number by its previous number – (n+1)/n : (n+2)/(n+1). Hope this is clear.  We know that a square has 4 equal sides. Each side of a square is called as “root” and the line that connects the 2 opposite ends is called as ‘Diagonal”. In the figure below sides AB, BC, CD, DA are called as “Root”. Lines AC, BD are called as ‘Diagonal”. Figure 19; Square  Figure 20: Pythagoras theorem Pythagoras theorem – This theorem gave us the formula to calculate the sides of a right angle triangle as given above. If you are not familiar with this, then please understand that if you know any 2 sides of the triangle the 3rd side can be calculated by the formula given above. I am not going to focus on the argument that this theorem was available in Indian scriptures before the Greek mathematician gave it. Let’s look at the concepts and not which civilization gets credit as of now. Since the fundamental structure is a square in 2D and Cube in 3D and also in the process of evolution one becomes many, let’s ask ourselves the following questions:   How one square does create another square which is larger in size, progressively? What is the progression and proportion in this series? How one cube does create shapes which are polygonal (Hexagon, Octagon, decagon, dodecagon etc) progressively? What is the progression and proportion in this series? Now let us see Figure 21 where and consider the square ABGF. You can enlarge the image to see the alphabets clearly. Now as we know sides AB, BG, GF, AF are called “root” – remember this well and let us assume the © Copyrights reserved Kanchi Periva Forum – www.periva.proboards.com & www.periva.org Page 18 of 49
  • 19. smallest root possible is unity and hence each root is of unit length. AB=BG=GF=AF=1. Area of this square = 1*1 = 1. Figure 21; Square Figure 22: Cube Line AG is called as the “diagonal” and as per Pythagoras theorem the length of AG should be √2. AG = √(AF2+GF2). So to summarize the root of the square ABGF is 1 and the diagnol is √2. Now consider a larger square AGHJ, here AG, GH, HJ, AJ are the sides and hence called as root. AH, GJ are the diagonal in the 2nd square. We know AG = √2, then AH = GJ = 2 as per Pythagoras theorem. To sum up the root of the square AGHJ is √2 and the diagonal is 2. Area of this square is 2. If you look at the ratio root/diagonal (root to diagonal ratio) of both the squares it is 1/√2 and √2/2 which results in 1/√2. This will progressively hold good. The magic proportion in this progression is √2. What we can infer from this is if we consider a progression of squares from a unit square to larger squares, then the proportion of the progression is √2. But before we jump into its philosophical significance let’s answer the second question. Consider the cube above whose side is of unit length. We know a cube is made of squares. We know ABCD is a square of length (root) =1 and diagonal = AC = √2. If we want to find out the length of the diagonal of the cube which is AE, then ACE is a right angle triangle with AC = √2. And CE =1 and hence AE = √3. What we can infer from this is if we consider a progression of cubes from a unit cube to larger ones, then the proportion of the progression is √3. I am going to handle the significance of √2 and √3 in the next part. © Copyrights reserved Kanchi Periva Forum – www.periva.proboards.com & www.periva.org Page 19 of 49
  • 20. Periva’s voice: Ancient Mathematical Treatises Jyotisa, as we have seen, consists of three sections. There was a scholarly man in the Matha who was particularly learned in this science. We wished to honour him with a title and decided upon "Triskandha-Bhaskara". "Skandha" literally means a big branch springing from the trunk of a tree. The three skandhas of Jyotisas are : siddhanta, hora and samhita. The siddhanta-skandha deals with arithmetic, trigonometry, geometry and algebra. The higher mathematics developed by the west in later centuries is found in our ancient Jyotisa. Arithmetic, called "vyakta-ganita" in sanskrit, includes addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. "Avyaktaganita" is algebra. "Jya" means the earth and "miti" is method of measurement. "Jyamiti" evolved with the need to measure the sacrificial place :"geometry" is derived from this word. The "geo" in geography is from "jya". There is a mathematical exercise called "samikarana" which is the same as "equation". The sixth Anga of the Vedas, Kalpa (I will speak about it later ), has a great deal to do with the fifth, that is Jyotisa. Kalpa has a section on "sulba-sutras". These sutras mention the precise measurements of the "yajnavedi" (sacrificial altar). The character of the yajnabhumi is called "cayana". The sulba- sutras deal with a number of cayanas like, for instance, the one shaped like Garuda. They tell us how to construct a brick-kiln ---the number of bricks required for the cayana of such and such shapes. The siddhanta-skandha is used in all this. There is an equation in the Apastamba sulba sutras which could not be proved until recently. Westerners had thought it to be faulty merely as they could not solve it. Now they accepted it as right. That Indians had taken such great strides in mathematics, thousand of years ago has caused amazement in the West. An incident in his life illustrates how relentless destiny is. Bhaskaracarya had a daughter called Lilavati. The great astrologer that he was, he found that she had "mangalya-dosa" in her horoscope, but he felt confident that he could change his daughter's destiny, as foreshadowed by the stars, with his ingenuity and resourcefulness, as an astrologer. He decided to celebrate Lilavati's marriage during a lagna in which all the planets would be in positions favourable to the bride. This should, he thought, ensure that Lilavati would remain a "dirgha-sumangali". In those days there were no clocks as we have today. A water-pot was used to measure time. The lower part was graduated according to the unit of time then followed ---nazhikai (nadika), one sixtieth of a day or 24 minutes. So the time of day was calculated by observing the level of the water in the lower container. ("Water-clock" and "hourglass" are English names for such an apparatus. Since water evaporates quickly sand was used instead. ) According to the custom then prevailing, Lilavati's marriage was to be celebrated when she was still a child. On the appointed day, she sat beside the water--clock and bent over it fascinated by the apparatus. As she fumbled around a pearl from her nose--stud got loosened and fell into the apparatus lodging itself in its hole. The flow of water into the lower receptacle was reduced. So what the clock indicated as the hour fixed for the marriage was not the right one---the auspicious hour had passed. Nobody including Lilavati, had noticed the pearl dropping into the water-clock. When they came to know about it, it was too late. They realised that destiny could not be overcome. Later Bhaskaracarya wrote a mathematical treatise and named it "Lilavati" after his daughter. The father taught his widowed daughter mathematics and she became highly proficient in the subject. Lilavati deals with arithmetic, algebra, etc. It is a delightful book in which the problems are stated in verse as stories. Bhaskaracarya also wrote the Siddhanta-Siromani which deals with how the positions and movement of the heavenly bodies are determined. We learn the text of an edict in the Pracinalekhamala that a Gurjara (Gujarat) king had made an endowment to popularise the works of Bhaskaracarya. Parts 7, 8, 9 and 10 of Euclid's Geometry are believed to be lost. All the 12 books on mathematics in Sanskrit are still available. "Making additions several times is multiplication; carrying out subtraction several times is division. " We remain ignorant of such easy methods of calculations dealt with in our mathematical texts. Varahamihira lived several years before Bhaskaracarya, that is about 1, 500 years ago. He wrote a number of treatises including the Brhat-Samhita and the Brhajjatika. The first is a digest of many sciences, its contents being a wonderful testimony to the variety of subjects in which our forefathers has taken strides. Brhajjatika is all about astrology. Aryabhata, famous for his Aryabhatiya-Siddhanta, also lived 1, 500 years ago. The vakya--ganita now in use is said to be based on his Siddhanta. Varahamihira and Aryabhata are much acclaimed by mathematicians today. All these books on mathematics also deal with the movements of the celestial bodies. There are seven "grahas" according to the ancient reckoning--the five planets and the sun and the moon. Rahu and Ketu are called "chaya -grahas" (shadow planets) and their orbits are opposite of the sun's and the moon's. • 22. Seelam – Significance of √2 & √3 Let’s look at the significance of √2 and √3 but before that let’s capture the philosophical significance of Progression and Proportion:  The whole world is conceptualized as wave harmonics of the primordial rhythm with a progression and proportion. Philosophically the Proportion which does not change / which is constant is the immutable component and the progression which changes / is volatile is called as the Mutuable component in the process of evolution. The whole universe is the progression and God is the proportion. So if I know the God’s proportion and the formula behind it I can create anything in this universe including a universe. This secret is called as the Brahma Vidya / Sree Vidya (Knowledge of Brahman, Sree) in Indian texts. What we are going to see further are very minor parts of the Brahma Vidya.   In the last part we saw, that the primordial square multiplied itself to be a larger square (progression of squares) using the proportion √2. The diagonal of the square 1 (ABCD) forms the root of Square 2 (AGHJ). This is very profound if you get the concept.  If we consider square 1 as the cause then its diagonal is the effect. This diagonal is the root for the next square (AGHJ) and hence the effect of Square 1 is the cause of Square 2, this cause results in square 2’s diagonal which is its effect and this is how the progression or evolution happens. If you can see glimpses of Cause and effect cycle and the famous law of Karma in this analogy then you can pat yourself.   A square halved by the diagonal (square 1 with area 1) produces a square twice its area (square 2, area = 2). The mystery of biological growth from cellular division or the different musical notes from the base tone is contained in this.  Robert Lawlor in his book “Sacred Geometry” very nicely puts it as the root of a plant (like the root in a square) is causative and embedded in the earth (and embedded in the square). These are very heavy and profound concepts just let it sink into you.  When you divide the full height of the human being considering the total height as unity then belly as called as Hara in Japanese, Dantein in Chinese, Nabhi in India which is below the navel will measure (2√2) from the soles of the feet to belly and (√2 -1) from navel to the head. In Yoga, Zen and Chinese meditation techniques this point corresponds to the transformative and generative aspects of the individual that involves rooting techniques for self transmutation. So Lao Tzu said, “To seek the root is the goal”.  √2 signifies the power of multiplicity. Hence the Generative aspect of this rhythm is attributed to √2. This represents the principle of transformation.  Remember √2 is a proportion in the progression of squares and a square does not become a higher form. We have seen that the diagonal of the cube (sides of unit length) is √3. It is this √3 which divides the volume form of a cube and the diagonal of the cube becomes a root for the higher shapes like pentagon, hexagon etc.  Hence √3 signifies the formative power of the rhythm while √2 signifies the generative power of the nature. © Copyrights reserved Kanchi Periva Forum – www.periva.proboards.com & www.periva.org Page 22 of 49

I am not going to touch upon important topics like Gnomic spirals and the relation between various progressions and hence I would request you to Google them if you are interested. PS: There are many books on this topic and I would recommend “Sacred Geometry – Philosophy & Practice” by Robert Lawlor which I found easy to read and understand. You tube and Internet is replete with tons of images, articles and videos on this topic and you can learn a great deal from them. © Copyrights reserved Kanchi Periva Forum – www.periva.proboards.com & www.periva.org Page 23 of 49
  • 24. Periva’s voice: Concept of Maya In the Mangala Sloka(invocation) to this Beeja Ganita(algebra), Bhaskaracharya says that supreme which is Infinite, does not suffer diminution when creating the world out of Himself, or gain addition when the created word attains Laya(merger) in Him. For, if the addition of even a fraction can make a difference to the infinite, then it could not have been infinite before such addition. Similarly infinite cannot become less than the infinite when any thing is taken away from it. The Infinite is poorna, full and limitless Supreme. The Prapancha (Universe) which is infinitely varied, is also limitless Supreme, the limitless Supreme will remain intact. Therefore, if this Poornam (the infinitely varied form of the objective Prapancha) is taken away from that Poornam (the subject which is Infinite), that Poornam, the subject Infinite, alone will remain. This may be illustrated mathematically as follows : if 2 is divided by 2, the quotient is 1. With 2 as the dividend, if the divisor is progressively reduced as 1, 1/2, or 1/4 etc., the quotient will respectively be 2, or 4, or 8,etc., Thus the divisor becomes less and less, the quotient will become more and more. When the divisor is the least, that is infinitesimal, approximating to Zero, the quotient will be infinity. This is known as the Khaharam - Kha standing for Aakas, signifying poojyam (zero), haaram, meaning taking away or dividing. How do we verify the correctness of an arithmetical question in division? We multiply the quotient with the divisor and check whether the resulting is equivalent to the dividend given in the question. In this Khaharam, or division. In this Khaharam, or division of any number by zero, the number that is divided stands for the Prapancha 9the pluralistic universe of infinite variety), the divisor, zero or Poojyam, which in mathematical language is an indefinable factor, approximating to nothingness, stands for Maya, and the quotient is the Infinite, that is Brahman. For the purpose of creating the Prapancha, which is dividend, Brahman , which is the quotient , multiplies itself by Maya, which is divisor. Even as I divided by Zero, or 2 divided by Zero, or 3 divided by Zero, will give the same quotient, when the Infinite is multiplied by Zero, it is undeterminate, and therefore, it can take the values 1,2,3 etc., which are Bheda sankhyas, or numbers connoting differences, standing for the plurality of the world. The Upanishad says that the One Absolute determined to become many, and for that purpose. It associated itself with Maya, and become Many. When this Absolute Infinite multiplied Itself in association with Maya, which is tantamount to zero, it appears as 1,2,3,4 etc., the several objects of this Prapancha. But when any number is multiplied by Maya. The dividend, which is the plurality of the prapancha is the Infinite variety. © Copyrights reserved Kanchi Periva Forum – www.periva.proboards.com & www.periva.org Page 24 of 49
  • 25. The quotient, which is Brahman, is Real Akhanda and Ananta. In the Saanti Mantra, Poornam adah is the quotient , Absolute Infinity, and Poornam idam is the dividend, pluralistic Infinity. Advaita anantam multiplied by Poojyam is Dvaita anantam. if the latter is divested of is Maya -- by a process of Khaharam-dividing by Poojyam which is Maya -- we get the Advaita anantam. Maya multiplies the formless Infinite which is One only without a second , into an infinity of finite forms. Th One alone, that is real, has value; the Many, which are products of Maya, are like Maya, without ultimate value. So Brahman is not affected either by diminution from It (creation or Srsti) or by the addition to It (merger or Laya) of Prapancha, which has no ultimate value. The Divine Mother is the Creative Principle of the universe, the Maya Sakti aspect of Brahman, which makes the Infinite One appear as the Infinite Many. She presents the formless Supreme in finite forms. It is only by her grace that one can transcend the Maya and obtain the advaitic realisation of the One without a second. • 26. Seelam – Vesica Piscis, √5, & Golden Mean () If you don’t know what is vesica piscis, please google and you would find it interesting. I am not going to explain it here and I would focus on the summary and aspects which are often left out. The philosophical aspect of Vesica Piscis, is a rotating point becomes as circle of unity. Two circle of unity (with its radius as unity) interacting / intersecting each other in a perfect manner offers an overlapping area which is considered to be sacred and fundamental to all the geometric forms in the universe. We will first see how √2, √3 & √5 are part of this Vesica Piscis. Please look at 2 circles who radius is unity and AB = 1, intersecting as per the diagram. The overlapping area ABCD is the Vesica Piscis and we can see √2, √3 & √5 all part of this Vesica Piscis. ABPQ and ABRS are 2 squares and the side of the square is 1. √5 is as significant as √2 and √3. In the diagram here √5 is the diagonal of the rectangle PQRS / diagonal of 2 squares – one below the other. Figure 23; Vesica Piscis √5 is the regenerative factor that binds 2 squares or that factor that transcends two worlds or the bonding factor for 2 cosmic entities. This √5 shall take us to the most important ratio which is the Golden mean or the God’s ratio. But before that let me share what stuck my mind when I was engrossed with Vesica Piscis and √3. Look at the pictures below. These are pictures of forehead marks of Hindu Brahmins sects called Iyengars and their supreme deity is Narayana. I correlated the striking similarity of the rectangle around the Vesica piscis and Iyengar’s namam. You just have to imagine the 2 overlapping circles are the right and left side of the face with the Vesica Piscis starting from the top tip of the nose. To me the formative principle of √3 is in line with the “Bhootha krut” and “Vishwa karma manu stvashtha” aspects of Maha Vishnu as per Vishnu sahasranamam. I had a good laugh on this correlation. Figure 24; Iyengar Namam 1 (Courtesy: Internet) Figure 25: Iyengar Namam 2 (Courtesy: Internet) Coming to the Golden mean, If you have not heard about it, just Google or here is a quick link http://www.goldennumber.net/. Some of you might be even have fatigue repeatedly reading and listening about it, like I do. Hence I am not going to rewrite what is widely available. But let’s look at the philosophical aspect of it, its relation to √5 and its manifestation. Now so far in √2, √3 & √5 what we have seen is how Unity evolves as many. But if I am interested in geometrically dividing the Unity so that this proportion evolves as unity then how do I do it? © Copyrights reserved Kanchi Periva Forum – www.periva.proboards.com & www.periva.org Page 26 of 49
  • 27. Consider a line of unit length and also consider two segments a, b so that a+b =1. Let a+b =1 a b A and B are such that it has to fulfill this condition of Proportionality that a/b : b/1. (Figure 26: Line and) This means what ‘a” is to “b”, is the same as what “b” is to the whole length which is 1. Mathematically resolving this equation a/b : b/1, hence b2 = a and hence b= √a. This means a + √a = 1. The answer to this equation is only one value which is called the Golden mean / God’s ratio denoted by  = 1.6180339… and a = 1/. Philosophically it is the division of unity and the only possible creative duality within the unity. You may ask as to why unity is not divided into 2 equal parts and why is should be 1/ (0.6180339..). This is effectively answered by our Upanishad “Whether we know it or not, all things take their existence from that which perceives them”. Adi Shankara said “the universe is an illusion / maya” because it is what we perceive. We tend to ignore them as philosophy or superstition. But let’s look at it scientifically as we understand. When the unity is divided into equal parts there is no asymmetry and difference and hence there is no perceptual universe. An asymmetric division is needed to create the dynamics necessary for progression and extension of unity. Let’s summarize our understanding again:       √2 – the generative component and a multiplying factor creates multiple squares from a unity of square. √3 – the formative component that creates multidimensional polygonal shapes from a cube. √5 – the regenerative component or the binding component that transcends and binds both the worlds.  - Golden mean or the God’s ratio, which is an evolutionary principle that is guided from within and an indisputable mathematical evidence of the conscious evolution of this Universe.  - Is a self-similar variable which can be used to derive Unity and it is the only proportion by which the Primordial rhythm maintains it perpetual oscillation to sustain this universe. Relation between  and √5 is,  = (√5+1)/2 © Copyrights reserved Kanchi Periva Forum – www.periva.proboards.com & www.periva.org Page 27 of 49
  • 28. Now let’s geometrically as to how  and √5 are intricately linked. Consider the Pentagon picture whose side is of unit length. Ie. AB = BC = CD = DE=AE = 1 and EG = FB = CG = DF = 1 and EB =  = 1.61803399 and BG = 1/ = 0.61803399 and hence all the ratios like AG = AF = EF = GB = 1/. Also FG = 1/2, which means EB = EF+FG+GB = 1/+1/+1/2 Also GI = 1/2 and GJ = 1/3 (Figure 27: Pentagon & , Courtesy: Internet) If you are interested more please check out the Fibonacci series and its relation to . The importance of 5 is dominant in every living organism while 6 and 8 are the characteristic of mineral and inanimate structures. It used to be rule of thumb that any plants / flowers which has 5 petals is an edible plant and hence 5 and pentagon are the symbols of life which contains the God’s ratio or the golden mean. Now let’s also understand how a √5 is related to √2 and √3. If we consider a right angle triangle with the base of √2 and height of √3 or vice versa then the hypotenuse is √5. Now let me draw the connection between √2, √3, √5,  and π. If you think they are all some random numbers which cannot be fixed to their 10th decimal and not related to each other, just see the following relationship. π = 2 x 6/5 or alternatively  = (√π * √5) /(√2*√3) This is the binding factor. I shall produce below some pictures which are aligned based on pentagon and the web is replete with them for you to understand more. These 2 parts were little heavy and I shall move to easier aspects on the universal rhythm from next part. The point I was trying to make is that everything in this universe is subject to a proportion and its fractals and let’s see the manifestation of it in our daily life. © Copyrights reserved Kanchi Periva Forum – www.periva.proboards.com & www.periva.org Page 28 of 49

  • 31. Periva’s voice: Signs & Marks If we call ourselves Hindus we must bear certain external marks, outward symbols. The boy scouts have a uniform of their own. Army and navy men are distinguished by certain insignia. There are number of divisions in police force. Even though their functions will not change if they wear one another's uniforms or badges, there is a strict rule with regard to their dress and insignia. The policeman's cap must not be worn by the sailor. There is a certain discipline and orderliness among all these forces. This discipline as well as orderliness is essential in religion also. That is why different jatis and different asramas have different functions and signs. According to the dharmasastras we must wear the dhoti or the sari in such and such a way or apply the mark to the forehead in a particular manner. All this is not meant for social discipline alone. There is a high purpose, that of purifying our inner life. The court attendant has a tavali. The officials do not have it. Is it sensible to why? But we do not take the same attitude with regard to the different signs and marks assigned to the people according to their vocations and family customs. We make a noise in the name of equality. Even though we remain divided in the matter of vocations - which indeed is for the welfare of the entire community-we are of one heart. This is the ideal behind the social arrangement in which different jatis are assigned different rites and external symbols, these in keeping with their natural qualities and callings. There is no high or low in all this. But we keep fighting among ourselves imagining that there is. Now we have come to such a pass that nobody wears any of the external marks of our religion. At the same time, we are not ashamed of wearing other types of signs or badges. To wear those marks that bring uplift of the Self we are ashamed. We dismiss all religious marks and symbols as part of superstition. But those who want to proclaim themselves to be reformers don a particular type of cap or upper cloth and these external trappings are given greater importance than symbols of a divine nature.
