Editor's Notes
The high mountain ranges isolated Greeks from one another, causing different Greek communities to develop their own ways of life. Over time, these communities became fiercely independent which encouraged people to participate in political affairs. The rivalry between the communities led to warfare that devastated Greek society. The Greeks lived on a number of islands to the west, south, and east of Greece mainland and the Greeks became seafarers. They sailed onto the Aegean Sea, the Mediterranean, and the Black Sea establishing colonies throughout the Mediterranean.
