Unit: Practices and Procedures of Mason Tending Worker
Objectives: To become aware of common construction safety hazards and to develop
and display a safety awareness in field exercises and on construction projects. To learn
the worker protection rules as specified in the OSHA Federal Register Subparts E and Q.
To become aware of common back injuries caused by poor lifting habits and to
demonstrate good lifting techniques in field exercises and on construction projects.

Section I: Safety
1. C/W “Occupational Safety and Health Administration for Concrete and
Masonry”
Have students watch the film, “Working at Heights Safely” and fill in the worksheet on
page 2 of the Practices and Procedures of Mason Tending Worker Manual. Instructor
will review this worksheet with students after the film is over OR use it as a test grade.

2. C/W Instructor will have assign the 13 OSHA subsections on pages 3-8 amongst the
students and have them paraphrase the section into their own words on the board in the
order they are presented in the manual. Students will be asked to record these

necessary, and then collect it and review information with the entire class.

H/W Students will read pages 15-16 on their own and choose one of the twenty “Top 20
Safety Violations Masonry Contractors Were Cited For By Federal OSHA in 1987,” and
create a poster board identifying this violation, Ranking, number of citations, SWR rank,
and specific OSHA violation. This poster board will be graded by a rubric included at
end of lesson template, graded as a test, and due in three days time.

3. C/W Using a Cause and Effect Chart included at the end of this lesson, the instructor
will first have the students read pages 17-19 aloud as a group and then have them fill in
the Cause and Effect Chart indicating the following Causes: Concrete mixture, wet
concrete, form oils, and grinding and sand blasting. The chart will go into the portfolio
labeled as “Portfolio Activity 1-Masonry” and graded if necessary

Section II: Project Planning
4. C/W Instructor will remind students that their Safety Violation poster board project is
due tomorrow and discuss any concerns or questions students may still have regarding
the rubric. Students will refer to page 23 in their manual and draw the area suggest by the
instructor on this page for a grade using the directions at the top of the page of this
activity.

Section III: Scaffold Erection
6. C/W Instructor will first check off the homework activity from the previous night and
review the information with the class. Then the instructor will have previously placed
Safety Violation projects around the room then allow students time to read each board,
and conduct a class discussion on each project welcoming only positive commentary.

formula required for estimating a modular brick 6.75 multiplied by the number of square
feet the wall is that requires the brick. Have students do kinesthetic activity of performing
various math formulas on the board in front of the class with the instructor answering any
pertinent questions regarding formula. Then have the class read page 47 individually to
themselves and discuss as a group afterwards.

http://www.masonrymagazine.com, possibly handing out a sample of this writing genre
as an example. Then the instructor will assign the following: mortar, Type S, Type N,
Type O, Efflorescence, Mortar Admixtures, Air-Entraining Agents, Accelerators,
Retarders and Extended-Life Retarders, Bond Modifiers, Corrosion Inhibitors, Water
Repellents, Proprietary Plasticisers, Colored Mortar, and State-of-the-and Art Mortar
Mixing, Mobile. (15 total) Instructor will ask students to create their own magazine
article genre, much like the previous ones they have read, and create one regarding the
topic they were assigned, complete with pictures, typed in a 12 font, and printed. Rubric
is attached.

C/W “Occupational Safety and Health Administration for Concrete and Masonry” Have students watch the film, “Working at Heights Safely” and fill in the worksheet on page 2 of the Practices and Procedures of Mason Tending Worker Manual. Instructor will review this worksheet with students after the film is over OR use it as a test grade. This poster board will be graded by a rubric included at end of lesson template, graded as a test, and due in three days time.
