1. RESEARCH INTO FILM MAGAZINES
I have created another slideshow presenting research into various film magazines and I explain how
they are used to effectively give more information to the reader about the films and how the magazines
are constructed. This slideshow manages to present how each film magazine is different and unique.
2. • It has been found that this film
magazine attracts mostly men in their
mid thirties
• It is a monthly magazine that looks at
both films and music, but also includes
sections on books
• It is published by IPC Media
• The contents of the magazine include
articles on albums and film
releases, interviews with
directors, reviews on music, film and
DVD’s and also presents any current
news around at the time
• This magazine cover will attract the
audience due to its wide range of
features it covers, not focusing entirely
on one aspect of the media industry
therefore broadening its market.
However it is still giving a wide scale of
information on films, enough to satisfy
the reader
UNCUT
3. • This film magazine is targeted at an
older audience, appealing to both men
and women. It is a more intellectual read
with high amount of detail included.
•It is published by BFI
• Content of the magazine includes an
inside look into the ‘magic’ behind the
film itself, giving deeper research and
analysis than other film magazines. It
looks mainly at films, not focusing much
on other aspects of the film industry
• Has a recognisable logo presented on the
header of every magazine produced.
Automatically drawing the audience in
and as it is easy to recognise they will
already know what to expect from this
particular magazine
• An international, academic magazine –
covering world wide film
SIGHT AND SOUND
4. • Focuses entirely on the Sci-Fi genre,
therefore attractive a specific target
audience.
• It is expected that this magazine would
attract more males than females. With an
age range of around 20+
• It is a monthly magazine and it is published
by Future Publishing
• The magazine covers topics such as, fantasy
horror, popular science and it also manages
to look at videogames, television, literature
and comics.
• This Sci-fi magazine is known for using
recognisable faces on the front covers of
their magazines, example being ‘Star Trek’
or ‘Doctor Who’. This is done to easily make
the magazine eye catching and will have an
automatic appeal to people who enjoy this
genre. Therefore making this the unique
selling point of the film.
SFX
5. • Empire magazine covers a broad genre of
films, however focusing more on mainstream
cinema.
• The particular magazine looks to target men
more than women, you can tell this from the
image chosen as well as the colours and font
choice that is apparent. All presenting a much
more masculine tone.
• It is published by Bauer Consumer Media
• It contrasts to such film magazines as ‘Sight
and Sound’ which has a niche market and has
a more serious approach when covering the
film industry, whereas Empire is a more
common, easy to read film magazine.
• It attracts the target audience through the
wide coverage of films, looking at more than
one genre, which not all film magazines
manage to successfully do. Therefore making
that the unique selling point of this magazine.
EMPIRE
6. • More male orientated, this can be seen by the types
of film the magazine chooses to cover
• It looks at mostly mainstream cinema, not focusing
too much on one particular genre, however leaning
towards more masculine style films
• This film magazine is published monthly by Future
Publishing
• Content of this magazine includes, film, blue-ray
and DVD reviews, news and features. It also loos at
what's new at present, having in depth interviews
with any actor/actress that's ‘hot’ at the time. The
audience will then know whether the magazine will
appeal to them or not this month depending on
who/what the story is covering
• I believe that this magazine is successful because it
is not too specific, therefore broadening its
horizons whilst still managing to focus on a
particular target audience
TOTAL FILM
7. • This film magazine is very different in that
each issue looks entirely on one film, it is
artistic and in depth, analysing in detail each
aspect of the film
• It attracts a niche market and is far from being
mainstream based. It is thought that this
magazine attracts a younger market who
appreciate culture and style of a film
• It is interesting that how the film chosen for
that month decides the entire layout, style and
form of the issue. Therefore changing month
to month
• The unique selling point of this film magazine
is that all the issue bases itself on the one film,
which readers may find an attractive feature
• The magazine is produced by the Church of
London
