Eruption of Mt. St Helens The first sign of Mt. St Helens was a series of small earthquakes, which started on March 16th. It finally erupted on May 18th 1980!
Olympic Gold? On the day of the Olympic games the U.S. defeated Russia, and it was definitely a miracle on ice! February 22, 1980, when the young Americans took down the mighty Red Machine from the USSR.
Death of John Lennon John Lennon was born on October 9, 1940, and unfortunately died on December 8, 1980. He was apart of the very popular band The Beatles. He was finishing autographing his book for some fans and he left there and was returning to his home, when he arrived there a mentally ill man was standing outside and called he name then shot him 5 times.  December 10th 1980 he was cremated.
Sandra Day O’Connor Sandra Day O’Connor was the first lady to become part of the Supreme Court, on July 7, 1981.
What is MTV? MTV was a big hit sensation for the people in the 1980’s. MTV, or Music Television, a cable television network that devotes most of its programming time to video clips that accompany popular songs, has had a profound influence on young people, and on popular culture in general, since its first broadcast in 1982.
Iran-Contra Affair It began with Ronald Reagan’s administration supplied weapons to Iran. a sworn enemy — in hopes of securing the release of American hostages held in Lebanon by Hezbollah terrorists loyal to the Ayatollah Khomeini, Iran's leader.  1986 the word had gotten out about the secret transactions. The Lebanese magazine Ash-Shiraa published a series of articles in November 1986, that exposed the weapons-for-hostages deal.  On Christmas Eve 1992, President Bush issued presidential pardons to all indicted in the scandal. The Iran-Contra Affair was ended.
Assassination Attempt of Reagan March 30th 1981, John Hinckley fired six shots from a .22 caliber revolver at president Reagan, when he was finishing a speech he was giving to the National Conference of Building and Construction Trades Department of the AFL-CIO at the Washington Hilton.
Michael Jackson This wonderful man was born on August 29th 1958.  He was basically a singer entertaining people his whole life.  His life had an early end when he died on June 25th 2009 age 50 of a drug-induced cardiac arrest, just as he was coming out of a four-year reclusive period and rehearsing for a sold-out London concert "comeback" in July. His first song ever and was the most famous Thriller .
Liposuction In 1974, Dr. Giorgio Fischer, a gynecologist from Italy invented the original form of liposuction.  French physicians Illouz and Fournier further developed liposuction around 1978. By 1980, liposuction was extremely popular in the United States but was confronting negative publicity due to patients experiencing excessive bleeding and undesirable rippling of the skin after surgery. In 1985, Dr. Jeffrey A. Klein, a California Dermatologist, invented the tumescent technique for liposuction, revolutionizing liposuction surgery.  Patients could now have liposuction surgery without the fear of excessive bleeding and undesirable skin depressions.
Drug of the 1980’s Cocaine was a very highly addictive drug in the 1980’s.  You can’t smoke Cocaine you have to snort it or inject it into your skin.
Flight 007 On September 1, 1983, Korean Air Lines flight 007, on its way from Anchorage, Alaska to Seoul, Korea, carrying 269 passengers and crew, strayed off its intended course and entered into Soviet airspace.  A Soviet Sukhoi 15 fighter jet, piloted by Major GennadieOsipovich, was sent up to destroy the intruding Boeing 747. This, at the height of the Cold War era, was a major international incident.
Who was Sally Ride? Dr. Ride was selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA in January 1978. In August 1979, she completed a 1-year training and evaluation period, making her eligible for assignment as a mission specialist on future Space Shuttle flight crews. Dr. Ride served as a mission specialist on STS 41-G, which launched from Kennedy Space Center, Florida, on October 5, 1984.  In June 1985 Dr. Ride was assigned to the crew of STS 61-M. Mission training was terminated in January 1986 following the Space Shuttle Challenger accident.
Beirut Terrorist Attack A suicide bomber in a pickup truck loaded with explosives rammed into the U.S. Embassy in Beirut, Lebanon. Sixty-three people were killed, including 17 Americans, eight of whom were employees of the Central Intelligence Agency, including chief Middle East analyst Robert C. Ames and station chief Kenneth Haas. Reagan administration officials said that the attack was carried out by Hezbollah operatives, a Lebanese militant Islamic group whose anti-U.S. sentiments were sparked in part by the revolution in Iran.  The U.S. government took no military action in response to the embassy bombing.
CD’S? James Russell invented the compact disk in 1965. James Russell was granted a total of 22 patents for various elements of his compact disk system. However, the compact disk did not become popular until it was mass manufactured by Philips in 1980.
Olympics in Los Angeles? The Olympics in Los Angeles started on July 28th 1984 and it ended on August 12th 1984. After the financial problems of 1976, only Los Angeles bid for the right to host the 1984 Olympic Games. The bid was criticised for depending heavily on existing facilities and corporate sponsors.
Who was Vanessa Williams? Vanessa Williams was the first black Miss America and the first Miss America to resign her crown. The resignation took place, under pressure from the Miss America organization, following the 1984 publication in Penthouse magazine of steamy photographs taken of Williams when she was nineteen. Williams emerged from the controversy with a great deal of sympathy from the public—many people believed that she had been exploited—and was well on the way to the career she desired. In fact, the publicity surrounding her resignation may have helped her chances more than merely being Miss America could have.

Crack Cocaine Crack Cocaine is the type of Cocaine you can smoke.  Crack cocaine is a highly addictive and powerful stimulant that is derived from powdered cocaine using a simple conversion process. Crack emerged as a drug of abuse in the mid-1980s. It is abused because it produces an immediate high and because it is easy and inexpensive to produce--rendering it readily available and affordable.
Len Bias Considered by many to be one of the greatest college basketball players of the modern era. During the 1985 and 1986 seasons, this unheralded Northwestern High School (Hyattsville, MD) product asserted himself into the forward spot at the University of Maryland.  He was the second pick taken by the Boston Celtics in the 1986 NBA Draft, expected to pick up where a retirement-bound Larry Bird left off. Tragically, that would never come to pass. Three days after being drafted, Bias spent a night partying with friends and snorting cocaine in his University of Maryland dorm room. Overtaken by heart failure, he died shortly after.  On June 19th 1986.
Nintendo! :D The Nintendo 64 was released in the year 1996.  It was the most amazing and fun thing for everyone to do. Everyone and there family were going out and buying the game system.  It was the new spectacular game system out there. “Everyone had to have one”.
What happened to the Challenger… The Challenger was supposed to take off on January 22nd 1986, but there were so many delays and the weather was bad. The Challenger finally lifted off at 11:38:00 a.m. EST on January 28th 1986.  Seventy three seconds into the mission, the Challenger exploded, killing the entire crew.From the beginning, though, Shuttle Mission STS-51L was plagued by problems.
AIDS Another way to refer to aids is HIV and HIV stands for “Human Immunodeficiency Virus. We know that HIV can hide for long periods of time in the cells of your body and that it attacks a key part of your immune system – your T-cells or CD4 cells. Your body has to have these cells to fight infections and disease, but HIV invades them, uses them to make more copies of itself, and then destroys them. Over time, HIV can destroy so many of your CD4 cells that your body can't fight infections and diseases anymore. When that happens, HIV infection can lead to AIDS.  There is no cure for aids.
Supermodel GIA She was the first American Supermodel. GiaCarangi was a top US fashion model of the late 1970’s and early 1980s. She suffered from drug addiction, later infected by HIV and was among the first women in the public eye to die from AIDS-related complications.
“Baby Jessica” On October 14, 1987, at age 18 months she fell into a well in Midland, Texas and was the central news story the world over as rescuers worked feverishly for 3 days before she was safely retrieved from the well.  She is currently (as at 2004) a teenager growing up in Texas, she has had 15 surgeries over the years but does not remember the incident at all. Her lifetime dream is to sing the national anthem at the Superbowl. Her plans are to go to college, get married, raise a family.

Soviets Leave Afghanistan The last Soviet soldier came home from Afghanistan on February 16, 1989, the Soviet Union announced, leaving behind a war that had become a domestic burden and an international embarrassment for Moscow.
What is Fashion? For some, the 80’s were a great time. The creation of MTV revolutionized fashion, the music industry and even how we watched TV. For others, it was nothing but bad hair, worse clothing and music that often had more to do with machines than talent.   • 2. Eruption of Mt. St Helens The first sign of Mt. St Helens was a series of small earthquakes, which started on March 16th. It finally erupted on May 18th 1980!
  • 3. Olympic Gold? On the day of the Olympic games the U.S. defeated Russia, and it was definitely a miracle on ice! February 22, 1980, when the young Americans took down the mighty Red Machine from the USSR.
  • 4. Death of John Lennon John Lennon was born on October 9, 1940, and unfortunately died on December 8, 1980. He was apart of the very popular band The Beatles. He was finishing autographing his book for some fans and he left there and was returning to his home, when he arrived there a mentally ill man was standing outside and called he name then shot him 5 times. December 10th 1980 he was cremated.
  • 5. Sandra Day O’Connor Sandra Day O’Connor was the first lady to become part of the Supreme Court, on July 7, 1981.
  • 6. What is MTV? MTV was a big hit sensation for the people in the 1980’s. MTV, or Music Television, a cable television network that devotes most of its programming time to video clips that accompany popular songs, has had a profound influence on young people, and on popular culture in general, since its first broadcast in 1982.
  • 7. Iran-Contra Affair It began with Ronald Reagan’s administration supplied weapons to Iran. a sworn enemy — in hopes of securing the release of American hostages held in Lebanon by Hezbollah terrorists loyal to the Ayatollah Khomeini, Iran's leader. 1986 the word had gotten out about the secret transactions. The Lebanese magazine Ash-Shiraa published a series of articles in November 1986, that exposed the weapons-for-hostages deal. On Christmas Eve 1992, President Bush issued presidential pardons to all indicted in the scandal. The Iran-Contra Affair was ended.
  • 8. Assassination Attempt of Reagan March 30th 1981, John Hinckley fired six shots from a .22 caliber revolver at president Reagan, when he was finishing a speech he was giving to the National Conference of Building and Construction Trades Department of the AFL-CIO at the Washington Hilton.
  • 9. Michael Jackson This wonderful man was born on August 29th 1958. He was basically a singer entertaining people his whole life. His life had an early end when he died on June 25th 2009 age 50 of a drug-induced cardiac arrest, just as he was coming out of a four-year reclusive period and rehearsing for a sold-out London concert "comeback" in July. His first song ever and was the most famous Thriller .
  • 10. Liposuction In 1974, Dr. Giorgio Fischer, a gynecologist from Italy invented the original form of liposuction. French physicians Illouz and Fournier further developed liposuction around 1978. By 1980, liposuction was extremely popular in the United States but was confronting negative publicity due to patients experiencing excessive bleeding and undesirable rippling of the skin after surgery. In 1985, Dr. Jeffrey A. Klein, a California Dermatologist, invented the tumescent technique for liposuction, revolutionizing liposuction surgery. Patients could now have liposuction surgery without the fear of excessive bleeding and undesirable skin depressions.
  • 11. Drug of the 1980’s Cocaine was a very highly addictive drug in the 1980’s. You can’t smoke Cocaine you have to snort it or inject it into your skin.
  • 12. Flight 007 On September 1, 1983, Korean Air Lines flight 007, on its way from Anchorage, Alaska to Seoul, Korea, carrying 269 passengers and crew, strayed off its intended course and entered into Soviet airspace.  A Soviet Sukhoi 15 fighter jet, piloted by Major GennadieOsipovich, was sent up to destroy the intruding Boeing 747. This, at the height of the Cold War era, was a major international incident.
  • 13. Who was Sally Ride? Dr. Ride was selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA in January 1978. In August 1979, she completed a 1-year training and evaluation period, making her eligible for assignment as a mission specialist on future Space Shuttle flight crews. Dr. Ride served as a mission specialist on STS 41-G, which launched from Kennedy Space Center, Florida, on October 5, 1984. In June 1985 Dr. Ride was assigned to the crew of STS 61-M. Mission training was terminated in January 1986 following the Space Shuttle Challenger accident.
  • 14. Beirut Terrorist Attack A suicide bomber in a pickup truck loaded with explosives rammed into the U.S. Embassy in Beirut, Lebanon. Sixty-three people were killed, including 17 Americans, eight of whom were employees of the Central Intelligence Agency, including chief Middle East analyst Robert C. Ames and station chief Kenneth Haas. Reagan administration officials said that the attack was carried out by Hezbollah operatives, a Lebanese militant Islamic group whose anti-U.S. sentiments were sparked in part by the revolution in Iran. The U.S. government took no military action in response to the embassy bombing.
  • 15. CD’S? James Russell invented the compact disk in 1965. James Russell was granted a total of 22 patents for various elements of his compact disk system. However, the compact disk did not become popular until it was mass manufactured by Philips in 1980.
  • 16. Olympics in Los Angeles? The Olympics in Los Angeles started on July 28th 1984 and it ended on August 12th 1984. After the financial problems of 1976, only Los Angeles bid for the right to host the 1984 Olympic Games. The bid was criticised for depending heavily on existing facilities and corporate sponsors.
  • 17. Who was Vanessa Williams? Vanessa Williams was the first black Miss America and the first Miss America to resign her crown. The resignation took place, under pressure from the Miss America organization, following the 1984 publication in Penthouse magazine of steamy photographs taken of Williams when she was nineteen. Williams emerged from the controversy with a great deal of sympathy from the public—many people believed that she had been exploited—and was well on the way to the career she desired. In fact, the publicity surrounding her resignation may have helped her chances more than merely being Miss America could have.

  • 19. Crack Cocaine Crack Cocaine is the type of Cocaine you can smoke. Crack cocaine is a highly addictive and powerful stimulant that is derived from powdered cocaine using a simple conversion process. Crack emerged as a drug of abuse in the mid-1980s. It is abused because it produces an immediate high and because it is easy and inexpensive to produce--rendering it readily available and affordable.
  • 20. Len Bias Considered by many to be one of the greatest college basketball players of the modern era. During the 1985 and 1986 seasons, this unheralded Northwestern High School (Hyattsville, MD) product asserted himself into the forward spot at the University of Maryland. He was the second pick taken by the Boston Celtics in the 1986 NBA Draft, expected to pick up where a retirement-bound Larry Bird left off. Tragically, that would never come to pass. Three days after being drafted, Bias spent a night partying with friends and snorting cocaine in his University of Maryland dorm room. Overtaken by heart failure, he died shortly after. On June 19th 1986.
  • 21. Nintendo! :D The Nintendo 64 was released in the year 1996. It was the most amazing and fun thing for everyone to do. Everyone and there family were going out and buying the game system. It was the new spectacular game system out there. “Everyone had to have one”.
  • 22. What happened to the Challenger… The Challenger was supposed to take off on January 22nd 1986, but there were so many delays and the weather was bad. The Challenger finally lifted off at 11:38:00 a.m. EST on January 28th 1986. Seventy three seconds into the mission, the Challenger exploded, killing the entire crew.From the beginning, though, Shuttle Mission STS-51L was plagued by problems.
  • 23. AIDS Another way to refer to aids is HIV and HIV stands for “Human Immunodeficiency Virus. We know that HIV can hide for long periods of time in the cells of your body and that it attacks a key part of your immune system – your T-cells or CD4 cells. Your body has to have these cells to fight infections and disease, but HIV invades them, uses them to make more copies of itself, and then destroys them. Over time, HIV can destroy so many of your CD4 cells that your body can't fight infections and diseases anymore. When that happens, HIV infection can lead to AIDS. There is no cure for aids.
  • 24. Supermodel GIA She was the first American Supermodel. GiaCarangi was a top US fashion model of the late 1970’s and early 1980s. She suffered from drug addiction, later infected by HIV and was among the first women in the public eye to die from AIDS-related complications.
  • 25. “Baby Jessica” On October 14, 1987, at age 18 months she fell into a well in Midland, Texas and was the central news story the world over as rescuers worked feverishly for 3 days before she was safely retrieved from the well. She is currently (as at 2004) a teenager growing up in Texas, she has had 15 surgeries over the years but does not remember the incident at all. Her lifetime dream is to sing the national anthem at the Superbowl. Her plans are to go to college, get married, raise a family.

  • 27. Soviets Leave Afghanistan The last Soviet soldier came home from Afghanistan on February 16, 1989, the Soviet Union announced, leaving behind a war that had become a domestic burden and an international embarrassment for Moscow.
  • 28. What is Fashion? For some, the 80’s were a great time. The creation of MTV revolutionized fashion, the music industry and even how we watched TV. For others, it was nothing but bad hair, worse clothing and music that often had more to do with machines than talent.
