• 54% of Service Users live with children
• 3% of Service Users have children with a Child Protection Plan
• 2% of Service Users have children with a Child In Need Plan

3. How do CRI safeguard individuals
and their families
• Help individuals understand they have a right to feel safe
• Maintain professional curiosity throughout the treatment journey.
• Understand the service user’s role in family life
• Support the individual to identify key outcomes for them and their
children.

5. Home Visits
• Home visits are arranged when someone comes into treatment
and they live with children.
• Visits check unmet need
• Safe storage.
• Observes the relationship between children and their parents.

6. Parenting needs Assessment
• Identification of the needs of children
• Impact of client’s substance use and parental / childcare
responsibilities
• Storage of drugs, alcohol, medication and injecting equipment
• Impact of client’s own needs on children
• Client’s perception about substance use

• Over emphasis on self reporting without checking out the
information
• Strength based approach can lead to worker optimism
• Risk of assuming the non using parent is the protective factor for
the child.
• A lack of professional curiosity during treatment journey
• Not detailing how risky the medication is for children of all ages.

• A fear of challenging other professionals.
