2. EMMRC
In 1984 University Grants Commission(UGC) New Delhi has launched
Country Wide Class Room(CWCR) and production facilities at 6 universities
in India through establishing media centres in the name of Audio Visual
Research Centres(AVRC) .
Later these centres have been renamed as EDUCATIONAL MULTIMEDIA
RESEARCH CENTRES.
EMMRC was mainly to use electronic media for the quality enrichment of
higher education.
UGC began its transmission of Country Wide Class Room (CWCR)
programme from 15th August 1984 through Doordarshan National Network.
Initially the coordination with these centres was done from UGC office
with the support of a consultant.
3. Subsequently, an inter- University Centre named as ‘Consortium For
Educational Communication’ (CEC) was set up in the year 1993 to
coordinate with media centres (AVRC and EMMRC) and to make CWCR
mission most effective and successful.
The Educational Multimedia Research Centre(EMMRC) was established as
Audio Visual Research Centre (AVRC) by the UGC – CEC under the Country
Wide Class Room (CWCR) project,with the following objectives:
1. Production of educational programmes(especially video and audio)and
related support material and setting up of appropriate facilities for this
2. Research related to optimizing the effectiveness of the programmes.
3. Providing a forum for the active involvement of academic and other
scholars in the creation of appropriate educational programme.
4. Studying, promoting and experimenting with new techniques/technology
that will increase the reach and effectiveness of educational
communication.
4. The centre is presently funded by the UGC and MHRD for producing
enrichment, educational video lecture and e-content programmes for
broadcasting these through educational channel on Doordarshan and
Internet streaming commanding a viewership of more than 25 million
students.
It invites faculty from within and outside the university as subject experts
to participate in the activities of the centre to write scripts on the topics
of their subject specialization followed by the production of film.
The centre is equipped with a large state –of-the-art studio with chroma
facility,latest technology broadcasting equipment and high powered
multimedia workstation to produce educational video content,e-content
programmes.
Besides this, the centre also conducts research related to the
creation,dissemination and evaluation of educational content.
5. Main functions:
It is the constant endeavor of EMMRC to get the best teachers from across
the country to deliver high quality lectures to be telecast on Gyandarshan
and Vyas, the 24 hour higher educational channel.
With the advent of internet,the activities of EMMRC has also diversified, in
addition to the educational television programmes, it is also active in
developing e-content and e-learning packages for web based education
and webcasting through the National Knowledge Network.
The main objective of the centre is to produce high-quality educational TV
Programmes,develop e-learning application such as e-content,multicast
live interactive lectures using EDUSAT and conduct media research.
EMMRC to produce educational documentaries on all subject to
complement and supplement the regular under graduate curriculum.
To record syllabus oriented video lectures of selected UG subjects from
the approved model curriculum of UGC.
6. To develop e-content programmes for web based education and for the
upcoming virtual university and National Knowledge Network.
The extension activities of EMMRC include organizing regular workshops
and seminars to train the interested faculty of all the universities in the
state in TV-presentation skills,development of television and e-content
scripts etc.
To produce internship programmes to PG students of Mass Communication
from across the state of Odisha.
The centre also undertake research in all aspects of educational
technology in relation to learning for both Urban and Rural college going
students in various disciplines.
The centre has made about 180 programes covering various subject and
areas.
