INTRODUCTION
A Learning management system [L M S] is a software application
for the administration, documentation, tracking, reporting and delivery of
electronic educational technology [also called e-learning] courses or training
programs. Modern training needs to be easy and accessible. A LMS allows us to
create, distribute and track training anywhere, on any device. The LMS has
become a powerful tool for consulting companies that specialize in staffing and
training, extension schools, and any corporation looking to get a better grasp on
the continuing education of its workforce.
LMS range from systems for managing training and educational
records to software for distributing online or blended/ hybrid college courses
over the internet with features for online collaboration. Colleges, universities,
school districts, and schools use LMS to deliver online courses and argument on
– campus courses. LMS also act to argument the lessons the teacher is giving in
a brick and mortar environment, not just replace them. Corporate training
departments use LMS to deliver online training, as well as to automate record-
keeping and employee registration. A LMS sometimes also called “course
management system”, ”pedagogical platform”, “e- learning platform is a
software system that delivers course ware plus e- tutoring over the internet.
CONTENT
A learning management system (LMS) is a software application or Web-based
technology used to plan, implement, and assess a specific learning process.
Typically, a learning management system provides an instructor with a way to
create and deliver content, monitor student participation, and assess student
performance. A learning management system may also provide students with
the ability to use interactive features such as threaded discussions, video
conferencing, and discussion forums. The Advanced Distance Learning group,
sponsored by the United States Department of Defense, has created a set of
specifications called Shareable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM) to
encourage the standardization of learning management systems.
LMS is the framework that handles all aspects of the learning
process. An LMS is the infrastructure that delivers and manages instructional
content, identifies and assesses individual and organizational learning or
training goals, tracks the progress towards meeting those goals, and collects and
presents data for supervising the learning process of the organization as a
whole. A Learning Management System delivers content but also handles
registering for courses, course administration, skills gap analysis, tracking, and
reporting.
Most LMSs are web-based to facilitate access to learning
content and administration. They are also used by educational institutions to
enhance and support classroom teaching and offering courses to a larger
population of learners. LMSs are used by regulated industries (e.g. financial
services and biopharma) for compliance training. Student self-service (e.g., self-
registration on instructor-led training), training workflow (e.g., user notification,
manager approval, wait-list management), the provision of on-line learning
(e.g., computer- based training, read & understand), on-line assessment,
management of continuous professional education (CPE), collaborative-
learning (e.g., application sharing, discussion threads), and training resource
management (e.g., instructors, facilities, equipment), are all-important
dimensions of learning management systems.
Some LMS providers include "performance management
systems", which encompass employee appraisals, competency management,
skills-gap analysis, succession planning, and multi-rater assessments (i.e., 360
degree reviews). Modern techniques now employ competency-based learning
to discover learning gaps and guide training material selection.
In this technologically driven world, many parents have nowadays
said to prefer that their children should learn from online schools. Online LMS
for education starts from kindergarten to high school and offers standard
training on topics related to a typical curriculum in non-traditional setting.
Nowadays, importance is attached to technical proficiency for gaining lucrative
jobs. Students are required to be well-versed with the changing technology since
it is essential that they get a hands-on on different aspects of IT for even the
routine tasks. Nowadays in America, adolescents and teenagers are well
connected with the latest technologies and are well-versed with gizmos. With
the help of LMS, they are finally getting freedom to learn in the perfect sense
since the Internet provides them with comprehensive information on different
topics along with illustrations as if they are in a virtual classroom. Online-based
forums and discussion boards are now used for interactions with teachers and
other professionals.
A learning management system makes learning fun and also
teaches the students with valuable real-life skills. The students can now apply
the theories that they learn in practical terms. Students can now retain a
competitive edge when they get into the real world. There are certain learning
tasks which are perfect when handled by the LMS including centralized
functions including content management. Learning itself though is not what the
system can help in since it is multi-faceted and depends on the ability of each
and every student. It is difficult for promoting informal learning in enterprises
with the help of a LMS since it is only a performance support tool, or
knowledge management application. Feature-rich tools are useless for the
average user since the more features it uses in the application, it increasingly
becomes difficult for the average user to handle and use it. Specialization and
decentralization are important learning foundations since it adjusts to different
learning environments and changing knowledge states.
When content is pivotal to learning, a LMS is sufficient to
help the learning process. But learning actually depends on more and more
interaction and connections although there are some different tools available
online including social tools which offer a reasonable alternative. LMS though
are useful for some fields which can benefit from the structured approach as
some subjects are quite linear and depend on rules rather than unstructured
thinking. If content is highly structured, then comprehension-based subjects can
be learning through the LMS. The artificial constructs of content lose value
since higher learning is based on cognitive thinking and any interaction imposed
by an LMS limits the learning ability of the students.
CONCLUSION
LMS refers to a suite of functionalities designed to deliver, track,
report on and manage learning content, learning progress and learning
interactions. LMS can be apply to very simple course management systems, or
highly complex enterprise-wide, distributed environment. The LMS offers a
number of features to support communication and collaboration within subjects
and communities. The various communication tools can help manage the
sharing of information and promote interactions between members. It includes
announcements, blogs, journals, wikis, discussion board, E-mail, providing
individual files to students, sign- up lists. Large, all- purpose LMS typically
include features aimed at facilitating collaborative learning- although many of
these systems do not seem to get much past providing four threaded discussion
groups. The two best known large commercial systems are blackboard and web
CT, but there are many, many others and some, such as IBM’S lotus workplace
and collaborative learning claim to be strong and collaborating features. There
are also many open- source and free LMS. Some competing directly with large
commercial offerings for others focusing on unique features. LMS also contain
evaluation process also.
