The Rock Cycle
Analyze the Learner
• A fourth grade class, 20 students: 11 boys and 9
girls.
Objective
• A fourth grade class will identify how all of the
three types of rocks work together in the rock
cycle by watching a YouTube video about the
rock cycle, and using their completed
WebQuests to create their own visual
representations of the rock cycle and presenting
them to the class with 100% accuracy by the end
of the day.
Select Methods, Media, Materials
• Video: Students will watch a YouTube video
about the rock cycle
• WebQuest: Students will use the WebQuest they
have been working on all week, as well as the
knowledge they gained from the video in order
to create their own diagram/representation.
Utilize Media and Materials
• Preview Material: The teacher will watch the
video to ensure it is appropriate and accurately
depicting the rock cycle.
• Prepare Material: The teacher will make sure
that students’ WebQuests are graded so that they
may use them for reference. The teacher will
provide materials (art supplies/paper/etc.) for
students to create their diagrams. The teacher
will make sure the video is working.
• Prepare Environment: The teacher will make
sure the desks are arranged in such a way that
everyone can see the video.
• Prepare Learners: The teacher will prepare
students to learn by guiding a discussion about
the three types of rocks to refresh the students’
memories.
• Provide a Learning Experience: The teacher will
be excited about the material so she might
inspire excitement in her students.
Require Learner Participation
• Students will be encouraged to ask questions
throughout the lesson. Students will pay
attention to the video. Students will use their
completed and graded WebQuests to create their
diagrams of the rock cycle using the materials
available.
Evaluate and Revise
• Students will be evaluated based on the accuracy
of their completed rock cycle diagrams.
