The Basics… <ul><li>Type of lyric poem </li></ul><ul><li>Usually a formal lament for a person’s death </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Expresses sorrow over the death of someone the poet loved, respected, or admired </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Sometimes mourns the passing of all life and/or beauty </li></ul></ul>

Back up…What is lyric poetry?? <ul><li>Takes its name from songs accompanied by the lyre (a type of small harp) </li></ul><ul><li>Boundaries (form) are flexible </li></ul><ul><li>Usually fairly short </li></ul><ul><li>Often personal </li></ul><ul><li>The sonnet and the ode are other types of lyric poetry, along with the elegy </li></ul>

Categories of the Elegy <ul><li>Threnody </li></ul><ul><li>Monody </li></ul><ul><li>Dirge </li></ul><ul><li>Pastoral Elegy </li></ul><ul><li>Each of the first three categories are very similar in that they are all songs/poems that lament a person’s death. </li></ul><ul><li>The Pastoral Elegy is slightly different in that it also focuses in on idyllic, rural life (the other three do not necessarily have to have this focus) </li></ul>
