The document provides an 8-step guide to creating the perfect resume. It instructs the reader to choose an appropriate resume format, include their contact information, write a targeted job objective, include a list of relevant qualifications and skills, list their work experience beginning with most recent and including accomplishments, list their education credentials, include other interests to demonstrate being well-rounded, and provide references. It also provides 3 extra tips to spell check, keep the resume up to date, and use relevant keywords.
2. Step 1
Choose a Resume Format:
• Check our “Resume Templates” section in the
Resources area of our webpage in order to
choose the format that’s right for you.
3. Step 2
Create Your Resume Heading
• This should include:
• Name, phone number, email address and (if
visible to the public) social networking
account names.
4. Step 3
Your Job Objective
• This should be no more than two sentences
and should be specific according to the job.
• If your field is quite targeted and focused, so
should your objective. If the field is much
more broad or entry level, your objective
should be equally broad and less concise.
5. Step 4
Summary of Qualifications
• This is your place to brag! Include all of your
relevant skills and abilities here. These should
be targeted towards the job/industry that
you’re applying for, but ensure that you don’t
leave out unrelated skills that are transferable.
6. Step 5
List Your Work Experience
• List your work experience- beginning with most
recent.
• You should try to list your last 7 years of work
experience. If your last 7 years has been in the
same role, you may want to include the one prior.
• Be sure to include your accomplishments within
each postion.
7. Step 6
List Your Education
• List your education- beginning with the most
relevant or important.
• Include your most recent completed
education. For example, if you are part way
through college, you should still include your
high school.
8. Step 7
List Your Other Interests
• Employers want to know more about you.
Include at least 3 other interests that
demonstrate you are a well rounded
individual.
• Community service and charity work also
should be listed here.
9. Step 8
References
• You should include at least 3 employment
references.
• If you do not have 3 references due to lack of
experience, use college professors or find co-
worker references- but be sure to indicate
them as such!
10. 3 Extra Tips
• 1. Spell check! You make a bad first impression
with typos.
• 2. Up to date information! Don’t just use the
same resume you used five years ago.
• 3. Key words! A lot of recruiters are only
looking through resumes online. Use relevant
keywords in your resume that recruiters would
likely be searching for in your field.
