Washington State University Team Mentoring Program To meet the needs of an increasingly diverse student population, WSU launched the Team Mentoring Program (TMP) in 2007 to increase participation, persistence, achievement, and graduation of underrepresented minority students pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering, and math. Students are connected to a multifaceted support system that includes upper-level students, faculty members, and program staff. TMP offers activities intended to strengthen connection to colleges; facilitate student success; increase STEM retention and graduation rates; and direct the student toward graduate / professional schools or leadership in the workforce. The comprehensive mentoring strategy has several focused tracks that, together, address many of the challenges that may cause attrition. These tracks include academic support; internship resources and professional development; undergraduate research opportunities; cultural understanding; and community-building. Scholarship support provided by the University and by corporate donors including AT&T and Boeing enable these activities. J. CAST (Collaborative Alignment Support Team) How does a group of educators and industry professionals come together effectively in the process of aligning curriculum with their individual standards? This session will demonstrate how to use a Collaborative Alignment Template and how this template is designed to align instructional units with the Model Curriculum Standards – both Academic Content Standards and Career Technical Education Standards. During this session participants will also work through the process that allows for building of future curriculum utilizing the Collaborative Alignment Template. Flash drives with the template, the California Standards and Framework, as well as aligned curriculum samples and other resources will be handed out to participants.

Increasing disposable income, rapid urbanization, and rising living standards are driving local demand for advanced education. At the same time, a shortage of quality local universities, and a substantial increase in the number of school age children make the sector ripe for investment. The Vietnamese government has acknowledged shortcomings in the current education system and recently changed its tone on foreign participation in local education. Efforts are afoot to pave the way for foreign investment, evidenced most recently by the introduction of concrete proposals to soften existing restrictions on foreign investment into the sector.

This presentation introduces the concept of Alternative Digital Credentials (ADC’s), sometimes referred to as “badges.” It discusses what ADCs are, how they are used, why they are important, how they are an imperative for higher education, how employers are beginning to accept and use ADCs, and what the future of ADCs might be. The basic thesis of this presentation is that ADCs are and will be a permanent feature of the higher education landscape and that societies and institutions that fail to adopt and recognize ADCs will lose their competitive advantage in the marketplace and fall short of their social responsibility.

This presentation discusses the creation of a javascript bookmarklet that executes a search of library resources from any web page. Many user searches begin with searches on the internet, often in Google and Wikipedia. For users to search the library resources, they first need to locate the library website, find the appropriate search tool and then execute their search. To make it easier for students to search the library resources, we created a Javascript bookmarket that eliminates the step of having to go to the library website first before searching. The bookmarket provides an important bridge between common search behaviors (especially among undergraduates), and the "deep web" content located in library-funded, proprietary databases, thus easing their transition into scholarly research. The bookmarklet can be dragged-and-dropped into any browser, after which a search can then be initiated from any webpage the user visits. When the bookmarklet is clicked, the search terms default to the title of the page, and a prompt is displayed that allows the user to change the terms.
