Dedicated to all of my teachers.

This is the work of your student’s students,
and as such I make dua that you be granted a share in its reward,
by virtue of your having been their teacher’s teacher.

Foreword

A long time ago now, we students embarked upon an online course entitled “as-Sabīl ilā
Tafhīm al-Waḥī – The Road to Understanding the Revelation”, in order to learn how to
understand the Book of Allah without needing a translated copy to hand. Back then,
classes were conducted once a week in a two-hour session on a Saturday or Sunday
morning – a small sacrifice for some precious knowledge, as it seemed back then. Little
did we know that this course would tie us all together for just over two years, and that in
the end we would be privileged to produce such a piece of work as this one (as well as
attending class four times in one week!).

For over a year we participated in these classes, learning the ins-and-outs of Arabic
grammar and morphology by memorising tables, translating short passages of the Qur‟ān,
and even studying a little bit of Arabic poetry. And alḥamdulillahi rabbil ‘ālamīn, during
this time we managed to attain a certain amount of proficiency in understanding and
translating the Arabic language. Cue our final assessment – our mission, should we
choose to accept it, was to translate a few aḥādīth, in order to find out just how much we
had actually learnt.

For almost a year we laboured on this project, with our weekly sessions now taking on a
different format to the classes. Whereas before we had been sitting and listening to the
teacher, we now began to translate independently and edit the translations collectively.
Who knew that translating could be such an arduous process? We spent months doing
this, trying to remember grammar rules, arguing semantics, and staring intently at the
computer screen in our attempts to ascertain exactly where to place the full stop (or the
semi-colon, as it so often happened). And then changing our minds and switching it
around all over again...
By the mercy of Allah – and after a long and fraught yet enlightening and ultimately
rewarding process – we have finally managed to complete what we originally set out to
do: translating and compiling the book that you now have before you.

As ever, all that is good in this book is from Allah , and any mistakes within belong to
us. We ask Allah to reward all of the people who made this book possible: first and
foremost our teacher, the_middle_road, for creating and conducting the course without
help or reward; Abu Mus„ab and Al-Farooq for their creative and knowledgeable input;
and all those who supported us along the way. We also ask Allah, Most Mighty and
Majestic, to accept our efforts and to make this book a benefit to the Muslim ummah,
allahumma āmīn.

Introduction
All praise is due to Allah, the Cherisher and Sustainer of the entire universe. And the
peace and blessings of Allah be upon Muh ̣ammad , his family and his companions.

The Prophet said, “I have only been sent to perfect the standards of good character.”
(Majma„ az-Zawā‟id) He had the most beautiful and perfect character, and it was the
way he behaved and interacted with others that won their hearts over and brought them
into the dīn of Islam. As his followers, it is only befitting for us that we should strive our
outmost to mould our own character on the lofty standard he has set for us. We should
adorn ourselves with the beautiful qualities and traits he possessed, and through so doing
become a reflection of his beauty. Each one of us is supposed to be a copy of him in the
way we conduct ourselves, so that when people see us, they see him – in some tiny,
minisclue way.

This aspect of the dīn, of having noble and refined moral character, is by no means a
minor issue. It was heavily emphasised by the Messenger of Allah who said, “Indeed,
from the best of you are those who have the most beautiful character.” (Ṣaḥīḥ Bukhārī)
Another version states, “Indeed, from amongst you, the most beloved to me are those who
have the most beautiful character.” (Ṣaḥīḥ Bukhārī) The reward that it carries is also very
great, as he has informed us: “There is nothing more weighty in the scale of good deeds
than having beautiful character.” (Sunan Abū Dāwūd) This issue should thus not be
belittled or neglected but be given the importance it deserves.

It was for this purpose of helping us attain beautiful character that this book was
compiled. It is a compilation of forty aḥādīth, which cover some of the qualities which
constitute beautiful character. This is by no means a comprehensive list of all noble traits,
but merely a selection of some of the more important ones. There are fifteen qualities in
total, with three aḥādīth being related regarding each one.
This book shouldn‟t be approached in the manner that other books are, where one reads it
from beginning to end in one go. Rather, try and open it each day or every other day and
read just one ḥadīth or one chapter. Then try and implement it by endeavouring to bring
that particular quality into your life.

One way in which I have been using this text, and a way in which I hope others will use it
as well, is for ta‘līm: which is where after the ṣalāh one person reads out a ḥadīth to the
rest of the congregation. In order to facilitate this, the majority of the aḥādīth that have
been selected for inclusion in the book are very short and hopefully easy to understand,
without requiring much explanation or elaboration. All of the aḥādīth are, to the best of
my knowledge, either ṣaḥīḥ (authentic) or ḥasan (good), unless otherwise stated as being
ḍa‘īf (weak).

A check-list has been included at the end of the book for the purpose of self-reflection.
We ought to assess ourselves in order to determine which of these qualities we already
possess and which areas we are lacking in and need to improve on – and then start to
work on trying to change that.

We ask Allah to make it easy for all of us to adorn ourselves with all of these beautiful
qualities, and thus become true representatives of the Beloved Messenger of Allah .

confined by His creation. It could also be referring to the angels, in which case it means that they will
supplicate to Allah to have mercy on you.

Anas ibn Mālik related that some Jews once entered upon the Prophet and said,
“Death be upon you.” The Prophet replied, “Death be upon you.” „Ā‟ishah then
interjected, “Death be upon you, O brothers of apes and pigs! And may the curse of Allah
and His anger be upon you!” “O „Ā‟ishah, stop,” he told her. “O Messenger of Allah, did
you not hear what they said!?” she protested. “And did you not hear what I said to them
in return?” he responded. “O „Ā‟ishah, gentleness never enters anything, except that it
beautifies it; and it is not removed from anything, except that it disfigures it.”

sound, as there is another authentic ḥadīth related in Ṣaḥīḥ Bukhārī which conveys the same meaning.

Abū „Abdullāh al-Jadalī said, “I asked „Ā‟ishah about the character of the Messenger of
Allah . She replied, „By nature he was not a vulgar person, nor would he purposefully
act in a vulgar way; he was not loud-mouthed in the marketplaces; and he would not
repay evil with evil - rather, he would pardon and overlook [people‟s transgressions].‟”

Anas narrated that a Jewish woman once brought a poisoned sheep to the Messenger of
Allah , and he ate from it. She was then brought before the Messenger of Allah who
questioned her about it. She said, “I wanted to kill you.” He replied, “Allah would not
give you the power to do that,” or he said, “Allah would not give you that power over
me.” The Companions exclaimed, “Should we not kill her!?” “No,” he replied. Anas
continued, “Ever since then, I would see [the effect of the poison] on the uvula of the
Messenger of Allah .”

Anas ibn Mālik related that the Prophet once passed by a woman who was
weeping at the side of a grave. “Be mindful of Allah and be patient,” he advised her. Not
recognising who he was, she replied, “Get away from me! Indeed, you have not been
afflicted by my misfortune!” She was then told, “That was the Prophet !” So she went
to his door and found that it was unguarded. “I did not realise who you were,” she
explained. He responded, “True patience is only that which comes at the initial stroke of a
calamity.”

Abū Sa„īd al-Khudrī related that a group of Anṣār once asked the Messenger of Allah
for some charity. Not a single one of them made a request except that the Prophet gave
him something, until everything that he had was finished. When he had spent with his
own hands all that was with him, he told them, “If I had anything more to give, I would
not withhold it from you. Indeed, whoever seeks to be abstinent, Allah will make him
abstinent; whoever seeks to be patient, Allah will make him patient; and whoever seeks to
be self-sufficient, Allah will make him self-sufficient. And never will you be granted any
gift better and more vast than patience.”

Anas ibn Mālik related, “I was once walking along with the Messenger of Allah
who at that time was wearing a Najrāni cloak which had a coarse hem. A Bedouin then
came up to him and roughly pulled his cloak. When this happened, I looked at the
shoulder of the Prophet and saw that the hem of his cloak had left an imprint on him,
due to how forcefully the Bedouin had pulled him. The Bedouin then demanded,
„O Muhammad! Give me something from the wealth of Allah which is with you.‟
The Prophet turned towards him, laughed, and then commanded that he be given
something.”

„Ā‟ishah - the wife of the Prophet - once asked him, “Have you ever experienced
any day more severe than the day of Uh ̣ud?”

He replied, “Indeed, I suffered at the hands of your people that which I suffered. But the
most severe encounter I ever had with them was on the day of „Aqabah, when I presented
myself to the son of „Abd-Yālīl ibn „Abd-Kulāl (to call him to Islam) - but he did not
respond to me as I had desired. So I left, while I was deeply grieved at their opposition
towards me, [and I was so lost in grief] that I did not even realise where I was, until I
found myself at mount Tha„ālib. I then raised my head, and all of a sudden there was a
cloud which had shaded me. I looked and saw therein Jibrīl, who called out to me and
said, „Indeed, Allah has certainly heard what your people said to you and what their
response to you was, and He has sent to you the Angel of the Mountains so that you may
command him to deal with them as you wish.‟ The Angel of the Mountains then called
out to me, greeted me, and said, „O Muh ̣ammad! It will be as you wish: if you want, I
will upturn these two mountains over them.‟”

The Prophet replied, “[No], rather I hope that Allah will bring forth from their progeny
someone who will worship Allah alone, without associating anything with Him.”

  • 6. Foreword A long time ago now, we students embarked upon an online course entitled “as-Sabīl ilā Tafhīm al-Waḥī – The Road to Understanding the Revelation”, in order to learn how to understand the Book of Allah without needing a translated copy to hand. Back then, classes were conducted once a week in a two-hour session on a Saturday or Sunday morning – a small sacrifice for some precious knowledge, as it seemed back then. Little did we know that this course would tie us all together for just over two years, and that in the end we would be privileged to produce such a piece of work as this one (as well as attending class four times in one week!). For over a year we participated in these classes, learning the ins-and-outs of Arabic grammar and morphology by memorising tables, translating short passages of the Qur‟ān, and even studying a little bit of Arabic poetry. And alḥamdulillahi rabbil ‘ālamīn, during this time we managed to attain a certain amount of proficiency in understanding and translating the Arabic language. Cue our final assessment – our mission, should we choose to accept it, was to translate a few aḥādīth, in order to find out just how much we had actually learnt. For almost a year we laboured on this project, with our weekly sessions now taking on a different format to the classes. Whereas before we had been sitting and listening to the teacher, we now began to translate independently and edit the translations collectively. Who knew that translating could be such an arduous process? We spent months doing this, trying to remember grammar rules, arguing semantics, and staring intently at the computer screen in our attempts to ascertain exactly where to place the full stop (or the semi-colon, as it so often happened). And then changing our minds and switching it around all over again...
  • 7. By the mercy of Allah – and after a long and fraught yet enlightening and ultimately rewarding process – we have finally managed to complete what we originally set out to do: translating and compiling the book that you now have before you. As ever, all that is good in this book is from Allah , and any mistakes within belong to us. We ask Allah to reward all of the people who made this book possible: first and foremost our teacher, the_middle_road, for creating and conducting the course without help or reward; Abu Mus„ab and Al-Farooq for their creative and knowledgeable input; and all those who supported us along the way. We also ask Allah, Most Mighty and Majestic, to accept our efforts and to make this book a benefit to the Muslim ummah, allahumma āmīn. Hiking (25th Dhul-Ḥijjah 1433 / 10th November 2012)
  • 8. Introduction All praise is due to Allah, the Cherisher and Sustainer of the entire universe. And the peace and blessings of Allah be upon Muh ̣ammad , his family and his companions. The Prophet said, “I have only been sent to perfect the standards of good character.” (Majma„ az-Zawā‟id) He had the most beautiful and perfect character, and it was the way he behaved and interacted with others that won their hearts over and brought them into the dīn of Islam. As his followers, it is only befitting for us that we should strive our outmost to mould our own character on the lofty standard he has set for us. We should adorn ourselves with the beautiful qualities and traits he possessed, and through so doing become a reflection of his beauty. Each one of us is supposed to be a copy of him in the way we conduct ourselves, so that when people see us, they see him – in some tiny, minisclue way. This aspect of the dīn, of having noble and refined moral character, is by no means a minor issue. It was heavily emphasised by the Messenger of Allah who said, “Indeed, from the best of you are those who have the most beautiful character.” (Ṣaḥīḥ Bukhārī) Another version states, “Indeed, from amongst you, the most beloved to me are those who have the most beautiful character.” (Ṣaḥīḥ Bukhārī) The reward that it carries is also very great, as he has informed us: “There is nothing more weighty in the scale of good deeds than having beautiful character.” (Sunan Abū Dāwūd) This issue should thus not be belittled or neglected but be given the importance it deserves. It was for this purpose of helping us attain beautiful character that this book was compiled. It is a compilation of forty aḥādīth, which cover some of the qualities which constitute beautiful character. This is by no means a comprehensive list of all noble traits, but merely a selection of some of the more important ones. There are fifteen qualities in total, with three aḥādīth being related regarding each one.
  • 9. This book shouldn‟t be approached in the manner that other books are, where one reads it from beginning to end in one go. Rather, try and open it each day or every other day and read just one ḥadīth or one chapter. Then try and implement it by endeavouring to bring that particular quality into your life. One way in which I have been using this text, and a way in which I hope others will use it as well, is for ta‘līm: which is where after the ṣalāh one person reads out a ḥadīth to the rest of the congregation. In order to facilitate this, the majority of the aḥādīth that have been selected for inclusion in the book are very short and hopefully easy to understand, without requiring much explanation or elaboration. All of the aḥādīth are, to the best of my knowledge, either ṣaḥīḥ (authentic) or ḥasan (good), unless otherwise stated as being ḍa‘īf (weak). A check-list has been included at the end of the book for the purpose of self-reflection. We ought to assess ourselves in order to determine which of these qualities we already possess and which areas we are lacking in and need to improve on – and then start to work on trying to change that. We ask Allah to make it easy for all of us to adorn ourselves with all of these beautiful qualities, and thus become true representatives of the Beloved Messenger of Allah . the_middle_road (26th Dhul-Ḥijjah 1433 / 11th November 2012)

But the most severe encounter I ever had with them was on the day of „Aqabah, when I presented myself to the son of „Abd-Yālīl ibn „Abd-Kulāl (to call him to Islam) - but he did not respond to me as I had desired. So I left, while I was deeply grieved at their opposition towards me, [and I was so lost in grief] that I did not even realise where I was, until I found myself at mount Tha„ālib. I then raised my head, and all of a sudden there was a cloud which had shaded me. I looked and saw therein Jibrīl, who called out to me and said, „Indeed, Allah has certainly heard what your people said to you and what their response to you was, and He has sent to you the Angel of the Mountains so that you may command him to deal with them as you wish.‟ The Angel of the Mountains then called out to me, greeted me, and said, „O Muh ̣ammad! It will be as you wish: if you want, I will upturn these two mountains over them.‟” The Prophet replied, “[No], rather I hope that Allah will bring forth from their progeny someone who will worship Allah alone, without associating anything with Him.” (Ṣaḥīḥ Bukhārī) 43
