Mental Attitude: Mild Cognitive Impairment Affects Men and Women Differently. Despite similar scores on the Clinical
Dementia Rating Scale, Mini-Mental Status Examination, and Dementia Rating Scale, a study that compared women and men with
mild cognitive impairment (MCI) found females experience a greater impairment in total verbal learning and verbal recall than males.
The authors of the study don't hypothesize on why such a difference between the sexes exists in this regard but hope future research
may determine the underlying mechanism. Journal of Clinical and Experimental Neuropsychology, January 2016
Health Alert: Salmonella Lives in Dry Foods Longer Than Thought. Salmonella, as well as other pathogens, can survive for at
least six months in cookies and crackers, according to a new study published in the Journal of Food Protection. Salmonella is a
bacteria that causes diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12-72 hours after infection. In severe cases, hospitalization and treatment
with antibiotics is needed to bring the infection under control. Journal of Food Protection, December 2015
Diet: Low Vitamin D Levels Linked with IBS. According to a new study, many patients who suffer from irritable bowel syndrome
(IBS) are vitamin D deficient. IBS is a chronic disorder of the gastrointestinal tract that includes symptom such as diarrhea,
constipation, bloating, urgency, white or yellow mucus in the stool, and the sensation of incompletely passing stools. The study
followed 51 patients with IBS and found 82% exhibited insufficient vitamin D levels. Furthermore, low vitamin D status also
correlated with lower perceived quality of life scores. The research team hopes to carry out larger and more definitive clinical trials to
determine what levels of vitamin D supplementation could help IBS patients. BMJ Open Gastroenterology, December 2015
Exercise: Do Elite Athletes Have an Anti-Aging Secret in Their Muscles? Older elite runners do not experience muscle weakening
in the same way non-athletes do, and researchers aren't sure why. In a recent study published in the American Journal of Physiology -
Cell Physiology, a team of Canadian researchers hypothesized that the constant physical training of older elite runners preserved their
muscle fibers; however, their results showed the muscle fibers of older elite runners and older non-athletes experienced a similar age-
related reduction in muscle quality. They note that further research will look to identify how the muscles of older elite runners
compensate for reduced performance at the muscle fiber level in order to maintain their overall superior performance.

Chiropractic: Chiropractic Services in Military & Veteran Health Care Facilities. A recent literature review has found that
chiropractic services have successfully been implemented in a variety of military and veteran healthcare settings. The authors of the
review note that doctors of chiropractic collaboratively work with other healthcare providers to manage common neurological and
musculoskeletal conditions, severe injuries obtained in combat, complex cases, and cases that include psychosocial factors. The
review also adds that overall, both veterans and active personnel are highly satisfied with the chiropractic services they've received.

Wellness/Prevention: Preventing Home Cooking Fires. In many houses, the kitchen is a gathering place. Unfortunately, the kitchen
is also where two-out-of-five home fires start. According to the Electrical Safety Foundation International, following these tips can
help make sure your kitchen remains a safe place: never leave the kitchen without turning off the stove, never leave children
unsupervised in the kitchen, keep the stovetop and oven clean of grease and dust, don't store flammable items near cooking areas, turn
off and unplug appliances that are not in use, never store electrical appliances near the sink, and families with little children should put
cooking pots on back burners or turn pot handles inward. Electrical Safety Foundation International, December 2015
