Looking Forward:
The Library of the Future
Or, how not to be left behind

      Howard Boksenbaum, Chief Library Officer
       Karen Mellor, Library Program Manager
RI Office of Library & Information Services
About libraries
Who uses the library today?
 Libraries are not losing relevance.
• Visits are up.
• Program attendance is up.
• Computer usage is up.
But some traditional services are down.
• Reference.
• Circulation?
Who supports the library?
Library funding support is only marginally related to
 library visitation
Perceptions of librarians are an important predictor of
 library funding support
Voters who see the library as a 'transformational'
force as opposed to an 'informational' source are
more likely to increase taxes in its support
From Awareness to Funding: A study of library support in America
                                                      (OCLC 2008)

How not to be left behind
 Be findable. Be available.
Become a node for information and interaction.
 Help people master new literacies.
 Develop social capital.
Talk to users, find out what they want.
Be where your users are using their tools.
Broadcast yourself and earn your audience.
And so . . .

• Everything has changed.
• Nothing has changed.
• The container does not matter,
    libraries are about connecting
    people and information.
