  1. 1. Has China been improving its Human Rights record? What do we know already? Opposition Parties are now allowed in Government. Secret Ballot elections held in villages and townships Increase in the standard of living for many people due to market economy - 300m lifted out of poverty One Child Policy has been relaxed Government has tried to encourage couples to have daughters Some forms of media have been allowed to criticise the Govt over issues such as the environment and corruption.

You should analyse the policies of the Chinese Government on human rights, and look at arguments for and against China having a good record. TASK:Look at your table. Pick 3-4 human rights issues that you will mention in your essay. *TIP* Pick the issues that you have the most information and balance for.
  4. 4. How do I write this essay? Introduction - Start with some background/general information about the issue. Address the question somewhere in the introduction. Since the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, the Communist Party of China (CPC) have had strict control over the rights and freedoms of the Chinese people. This has, in recent years, come under scrutiny with many in China and abroad accusing the Chinese Government of Human Rights violations. This essay will discuss China’s record on human rights and analyse whether it shows any signs of improving.
  5. 5. How do I write this essay? Main Body – Take human rights issues, describe them, give examples and analyse whether the Chinese Government is showing any improvement in these areas. The CPC is the main political body in China and controls all decision making. All positions at national and provincial levels are occupied by CPC members. There are some opposition parties but these are under the control of the CPC, other parties such as the China Democracy Party are banned and leaders are in exile. The CPC has moved to create secret ballot elections at local level in recent years however the selection of candidates by the CPC means that there are very few democratic institutions in China.
  6. 6. How do I write this essay? Conclusion – Address the question and summarise the evidence you have put forward to answer it. You do not need to come to a definitive conclusion on your question. In conclusion, there is evidence to show that China has made some progress in addressing its poor Human Rights Record such as trying to establish some democratic structures, being more open to the media and improving the standards of living for many Chinese citizens through the establishment of a market economy . However we can see from the world coverage of the run up to Beijing Olympics this year that China has a long way to go if its wants to have a good human rights record.
