3. Celiac is a genetic autoimmune disease that attacks villi in the small intestine which creates
an inability to absorb nutrients, essentially the person starves without diagnosis. Celiacs can
also have effects to the brain and skin.
Eventually, the decreased absorption of nutrients (malabsorption) that occurs with celiac
disease can cause vitamin deficiencies that deprive your brain, peripheral nervous system,
bones, liver and other organs of vital nourishment.
Celiacs deal with increased risk for other autoimmune diseases such as: 40% increase for
cancers, Thyroid, Diabetes, Autism*, Rheumatoid Arthritis.
No treatment can cure celiac disease. However, you can effectively manage celiac by a
change in your diet.
People who have celiac disease cannot tolerate gluten, a protein in wheat, rye, and barley.
Gluten is found mainly in foods but may also be found in everyday products such as
medicines, vitamins, and lip balms.
