PRIMARY RESEARCH MATERIAL
My primary texts are:
• Dredd (Pete Travis 2012) Travis, Pete , 2012. Dredd, DNA Films.
• Rush (Ron Howard 2013) Howard, Ron , 2013. Rush, Exclusive Media Group.
• Country Wedding (Valdís Óskarsdóttir 2008) Óskarsdóttir, Valdís, 2013.
Country Wedding, Mystery Island.
• Antichrist (Lars von Trier 2009) Trier, Larsvon, 2009. Antichrist, Zentropa
Entertainments.
I have chosen these films because they are all separate genres however they all have
elements that are similar and you can see his distinctive style in his films. I want to find
how Dod Mantle uses mise-en-scene specifically lighting or the lack of lighting to
enhance his works. I want to find how it enhances his shots and the decisions he makes
to create a specific gritty feel in his films. I will also be looking to see if there is
continuity between his earlier ‘non-Hollywood’ movies and his recent Hollywood
movies.

Daly, Kristen M., 2009. New Mode of Cinema: How Digital Technologies
are Changing Aesthetics and Style, New York, Columbia University Press.
This is a report on the changing of aesthetic and style in
cinema. The report directly references Dod Mantles
work this will help me understand his style and aesthetic
in his film it also references how many films are made
etc.

This is a run down on Dod Mantles work in Rush which
is one my primary research materials, this will be useful
when looking into the film myself and it has some
insight on how specific scenes where filmed.

A simple QnA with Dod Mantle however some of the
questions are rather in depth and offer some good
insight into his work and his techniques. It also cover
multiple films which will be useful for me finding if he is
consistent throughout his career.
BFI Dod Mantle Interview

Interview, 2011. ‘Anthony Dod Mantle’, BFI Online, accessed
09/12/14: http://explore.bfi.org.uk/4ce2badd867ec
This interview is about Dod Mantles life, however
it is clear in the interview that many of his
inspirations come from the areas he travelled to,
this gave me an idea on what type of cinema to
look at when thinking about work that
influenced him.

Dod Mantle in this interiew talks about his role
during post and pre, while also stating some aspects
that he liked or was inflected by when making
certain films. His work with slow-motion is metioned
during the interview which is good because I shall
be using it within my short film.
