2. PRIMARY RESEARCH MATERIAL
My primary texts are:
• Dredd (Pete Travis 2012) Travis, Pete , 2012. Dredd, DNA Films.
• Rush (Ron Howard 2013) Howard, Ron , 2013. Rush, Exclusive Media Group.
• Country Wedding (Valdís Óskarsdóttir 2008) Óskarsdóttir, Valdís, 2013.
Country Wedding, Mystery Island.
• Antichrist (Lars von Trier 2009) Trier, Larsvon, 2009. Antichrist, Zentropa
Entertainments.
I have chosen these films because they are all separate genres however they all have
elements that are similar and you can see his distinctive style in his films. I want to find
how Dod Mantle uses mise-en-scene specifically lighting or the lack of lighting to
enhance his works. I want to find how it enhances his shots and the decisions he makes
to create a specific gritty feel in his films. I will also be looking to see if there is
continuity between his earlier ‘non-Hollywood’ movies and his recent Hollywood
movies.

This interview is about Dod Mantles life, however
it is clear in the interview that many of his
inspirations come from the areas he travelled to,
this gave me an idea on what type of cinema to
look at when thinking about work that
influenced him.
