Native American’s struggle for equal rights Problems: Mascot Racism Reservations And so many  more Bentley Smith Jon
Guiding Question  What can I learn from past civil rights struggles to help resolve issues that still exist today?
Native Americans are living on reservations and can’t get out Native Americans are living on reservations that are also used to hold toxic waste Reservations are fairly small by comparison to the industrial world Map of Western Native American Reservations
Questions that helped us research How far did the government go with mistreating Native Americans? How is a bill made a law? How do we get to Congress? Why does the government need so much land? Is there anyone who might support us?
Research that helped us solve the problem We found that there was a Native American running for Congress who is named Jeff Doctor The story of Wounded Knee, 1890 A company called the Native American Business Alliance (NABA) A group for Native Americans called the Native American Rights Fund (NARF) The story of the Native Americans storming Alcatraz We learned how to pass a law
Final Solution of the Problem The final solution to our problem is to pass a law giving Native Americans there own land.
Up Sides(Pros) Native Americans will get there own land. We know good writers who will help us write the law. We know important people to support us. We know a lot of people. Native Americans can get jobs.
Down Sides (Cons) We are kids with little power. We have to get to Congress. The important people we know aren’t powerful in the Government. Native Americans can’t pay for land. Government can treat Natives however they want. Native Americans can’t get jobs.
Facts to help support us globally A mascot that is racist to another country is the Michigan State Spartan making fun of people in Sparta Another mascot that is racist towards another country is the Notre Dame Fighting Irish that is a racist leprechaun In Zimbabwe, there has been increasing racism against the white farmers, due to poverty and lack of land ownership by Africans
Color: Magenta  Magenta is a color that at first glance looks bright, colorful, and pink, but if you look closer you find that it is darker and sadder than pink. The Native Americans are like this because at first look the Natives look happy and joyful, but if you look at them more closely you will doubt if they are happy being forced to live near toxic waste
Symbol: British Petroleum (bp) Symbol The British Petroleum (bp) symbol has much in common with Native Americans First, both are not liking the way recent history treated them. As an example, Native Americans probably don’t like the way that they have been pushed onto tiny reservations.  British Petroleum (bp) probably doesn’t like the oil spill that happened months ago.

We used to think… That Native Americans should just go and get equal rights for themselves because everyone needs to get what they earn
But know we think… That Native Americans can’t get equal rights because no one will listen to them
