For my music video, I wanted to use the
conventions of other music videos that belong
to the rather niche genre of acoustic songs
performed by rock bands/singers.
One music video that well and truly epitomises
this niche, is Good Riddance by Green Day,
pictured on the left.
This heavily influenced my the performance
elements of my music video, because I wanted
to replicate the simplistic imagery of the video
that puts emphasis on the star as a performer.

The shot [from Green Day] I tried to pay
homage to seems to put emphasis on close up
of the singer playing the song, and I tried to
use this convention in my own product.
Audiences like to have one star to identify
with, particularly in this niche genre where
there’s typically one singer/guitarist.
I tried to use the mise en scene seen in the
conventions, by including a star dressed in
casual clothing, holding a guitar.
Too complete the homage, I kept the shot as a
medium long shot.
Green Day’s video used a montage edit, as do
almost all music videos (not necessarily
specific to the genre), and so I did the same
with my editing.

The music video for Good Riddance also employs the conventions of editing the speed of the shot, using
slow and fast motion editing to juxtapose each other. I reciprocated this too, but I tried to
challenge/develop the convention by switching the edit from being exclusively used on actors, to being
used on an action (the pouring of a drink).
I opened my music video with slow motion shots of Aaron, my star, to introduce him properly to my
audience. The camera essentially lingers on him, and the audience can see all features, clothing, and
facial idiosyncrancies that form his brand identity.

I used slow motion to add the significance to the pouring
of the glass, in the same way Green Day’s music video significance
to the sombre faces of the actors with slow motion.
I did this too with the dropping of the glass in black and white, with the
black and white convention mirroring that shown in music videos such as
Livin’ on a Prayer by Bon Jovi.

7. For the shots of my protagonist walking, I tried to replicate the
slow motion well framed shots seen in Listener’s Wooden Heart
video.
The shots show the protagonist of that video walking slowly in
long shot, and I replicated this but challenged the convention
slightly by using a 50mm lens and getting a closer shot.
