Not all wine drinkers are the same just as not all web users are alike. After a
thorough analysis, it was found that Gallo Family Vineyards wines appeal to low-to-
mid income, cross-over drinkers who favor the mobile to desktop.The challenges
to overcome were a user experience that didn’t aid in the wine selection process
and the site not being optimized for mobile user. By considering a variety of “wine
moments” iiD created a user experience for beginner wine drinkers to intuitively
choose wines to suit their varied lifestyles.

Given Gallo Family Vineyard’s position
as an affordable way to enjoy wine for a
wide demographic of drinkers who had
previously enjoyed beer or cocktails,
the company needed to revamp its
website to establish an approachable
branded channel of communication to
appeal to a variety of consumers lacking
the knowledge to choose the right wine.
The challenges to overcome were a user
experience that didn’t aid in the wine
selection process and the site not being
optimized for mobile users who made
up a large proportion of web traffic.
iiD created an interface for a wine
website that completely changes
the way users interact with a wine
company’s products. We began our
process by researching the possible
user scenarios in choosing wines. By
considering a variety of “wine moments”
we came up with highly useful tools for
transitioning wine drinkers to choose
wines by type, taste, food, recipe, and
occasion. We created a UX design that
had an app-like appeal, encouraging
users to try a variety of different filters
to decide the right wine and have an
engaging experience with the brand.
