Authors' provide influential messages and lessons to the readers by using myriad themes throughout
their books. The author, Hemingway of the novella, The Old Man and the Sea, constantly states the
theme of "determination". Determination means not giving up on something that is desirable. In
everyday life, we all strive for things we desire. Hemingway expresses to the readers the real
meaning of determination and the use of determination in our everyday life. One of the major
myriad themes that Hemingway states in The Old Man and the Sea is determination. Determination
means firmness of purpose, to never give up. The meaning of this empowering word inspires many

By implementing determination, never allow failure to be a discouragement. For instance, a
historical figure named Thomas Edison tried multiple times to invent the light bulb, but was
unsuccessful. Because of his determination, he did not allow that to make him give up, yet he
allowed those failed attempts to encourage him to go above and beyond, and eventually he invented
the first light bulb and made history. This example was to enlighten not to allow one failed attempt
to become a discouragement, but yet an encouragement to do better. Like Edison once stated, "Our
greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more
time."
An author uses themes to apply life lessons for the readers. Hemingway, the author of The Old Man
and the Sea uses determination as the major theme of the book. Determination means never giving
up on anything. By applying determination to our life, just simply never allow anyone to stand in
your way of success. The true meaning of determination and how we should impact it in our daily
lifestyle was the message Hemingway was trying to indicate to the

Succeeding with determination Good morning fellow parents, faculty, staff, and classmates. It is an
honor to see many parents and family members arrange their busy, tight schedules to come and
commemorate a loved one's graduation, promoting from the 8th grade to high school. Many people
in the audience can agree that the 8th grade class of 2016–2017 passed by extremely fast. It seems
like it was only a few months back when parents and students were shopping for school uniform
and supplies. However, time has passed in the blink of the eye. We had our eyes wide open when
we first walked into our new middle school building. But now, we have blinked and we are finally

Trying our best shows that we are willing to work hard, despite how difficult the task is. If we do
not try our best, how do we expect to accomplish our goals? Our decisions to try to our fullest will
reach our accomplishments. Although it is easier said than done, if we are determined,
committed and persistent in our works, it can attract others. One memory in 8th grade that will
always stick with me is what Ms. Yip has once said: I don't consider myself smart. But, I am very
hardworking. This is a powerful statement, considering the fact that you do not need to be smart to
succeed. There are people who can be smart, but they could be lazy and not productive. In order
for me to succeed, I do not need to be the smartest or the best. As imperfect humans, we cannot
always be the best. But, we all should try to be the best. Yet, we will encounter obstacles that will
interfere with our determination. It is certainly easy to give up, but we should keep on going even
though it is easier said than done. Think of this mathematical term: the slope intercept equation. Also
known as y=mx+b, the rise, run, and y–intercept can affect the position of the line. What do I mean
by this? The slope can be could be negative or

3. Determination, Discipline, And Dedication
Determination, discipline, and dedication are the three keys to Doctor Sampson (Sam) Davis'
success. Growing up in the streets of Newark was not easy for any child, pre–teen, teen, and adult,
especially for Davis but with the three D's to success he speaks of in The Pact: Three Young Men
Make a Promise and Fulfill a Dream, shows that anyone can succeed when you have friends to
help you through it all. Even though Davis did not have a perfect childhood, determination,
dedication and discipline would help push him. Davis, as a child, has seen what describes a
dysfunctional family and has witnessed many traits of physical, mental, and verbal abuse
between his mother and father; "Your daddy ain't shit," and, "Your mama ain't shit" (Davis 19). In
some instances, the violence was so severe that the use of a firearm or the destruction of property
occurred. Davis' father would divorce from his mother but, attempt to be there for his children, yet
the divorce still took an emotional toll on the kids. As for Davis, he would bury his feelings, to get
over the divorce. Davis acknowledged his mother lacked an adequate education, thus, this motivated
him to become well educated. However, acquiring adult responsibilities, such as writing and
making bank deposits and reading important documents to his illiterate was a grand task for a
young child. Times were getting harder for Davis' family and lack of funds meant utilities could not
be paid; his family would be powerless. Even through

`Determination is a driving force. For me, the determination to succeed has been my greatest
ambition. I have strove to push my limits; to surpass even own my expectations. My determination
to succeed has been the leading factor in everything I do for the larger portion of my life. I was
determined to pass high school with fantastic grades. I was determined to ace every test and every
paper. I was determined to get accepted into Arkansas State University. I am determined to
become a doctor and help others. I am determined to be something bigger; to have something much
greater. I was born and raised in Cave City, Arkansas. I am 17 years old. I am also a senior at Cave
City High School. When I am not a student, writing concurrent English Comp. 2 papers and
applying for every scholarship available, I am a writer. I hope that one day I will be able to
publish my own work. Though this is not my chosen career path, it is a goal I am more than

5. Essay on Determination
Some people believe that talent and a winning attitude are all you need in order to succeed in your
endeavors, but a winning attitude means having determination, which many people lack. As seen on
wisdomforthesoul.org, "Real leaders are ordinary people with extraordinary determination."
Determination is an important factor in the overall success or failure of a person's efforts.
Unfortunately, determination is not something that comes easy to the majority of people. To be truly
determined, a person must first be passionate about what they're doing. Passion, however, is only the
first step towards resolution and determination. One must have a clear goal in mind, and be willing to
do anything to achieve said goal. Once they have set...show more content...
(www.merriam–webster.com) This is synonymous with my personal definition of determination.
When the end is decided upon, there is no reason or desire to change said goal. A person under
the influence of determination is comparable to a train. The train will not change its direction, as
it cannot, and no matter what, the train will continue along the tracks until it either reaches its
destination, or is stopped by the conductor. For as an example, my plan after high school is to go
to college, and then move into the professional world. When confronted about possibly wanting to
join the military, my answer is absolutely not. Going to college right after high school has always
been my mindset, and there's no way my determination will let that change. I am the metaphorical
train, because my destination is set, and there's no chance for me to adjust my direction. I will not
stray from my goal, because it would mean wrecking myself and all those involved in my
endeavors. There will be mountains in front of me, and people I may have to run over to reach my
goal, but when one's mind is set, they will not waver, and neither will I.
Another dictionary defines determination as firmness of purpose (thefreedictionary.com). When one
is determined, they are ready for what life throws at them, because no matter how obscure the path
may be, they always have a clear view of their final destination. To be determined means to always

I believe in determination, which is what helps me conquer even the hardest obstacles in life. I
have come to find that I am most determined when it comes to school; pushing myself beyond the
limits. For example, each year at my school, I am given the task of picking out the classes I want

all my middle school years, and when I did, I got dead last from the top 8. I know, it's

8. The Importance of Determination Essay
The Importance of Determination
Everyday people face challenges, but it is important that one does not give up, and to keep trying
until they successfully overcome the obstacles that stand in their way. "Mother to Son" by Langston
Hughes and "Still I Rise" by Maya Angelou are two different works written by two different authors
yet they both convey the same message. Together, the two authors stress the significance of pushing
harder when faced with conflicts rather than simply giving up. Using figurative language and
repetition, Langston Hughes and Maya Angelou effectively emphasize this message in both of their
poems. In both poems, both authors attempt to convince the reader of the importance of not giving
up and trying harder, and...show more content...
Angelou writes, "You may trod me in the very dirt / But still, like dust, I'll rise." (Angelou, 3–4).
Angelou compares triumph after a challenge in life being similar to that of dust rising after dirt
has been trotted on, thus proving that just as important as it was for the dust to rise after the dirt, it
is equally as important to rise after being faced with a challenge in life. Identically to the previous
quotation, Angelou again expresses the importance of determination by writing, "Just like moons
and like suns / With the certainty of tides / Just like hopes springing high / Still I'll rise." (9–12).
Angelou effectively compares the sure rising of moons and suns rising with the certainty of tides,
and the guaranteed rise of hopes to her own certainty to rise. Her persistence to continue to rise after
being put through many evident hardships demonstrates the importance of pushing harder when
encountering difficulties rather than quitting when things get hard. All things considered, both poets
are able to successfully interpret the importance of pushing harder when faced with conflicts rather
than simply giving up by using figurative language such as metaphors and similes. Equally as
significant as the use of figurative language in both Langston Hughes' poem, and Maya Angelou's
poem, is the use

Self–determination Theory emphasizes seeking the best and healthiest way to grow.
Self–determination theory consists of autonomy, competence and relatedness, and when these needs
are met by someone, they feel motivated for action and feel positive emotions toward themselves and
their goals. (Intrinsic motivation). Autonomy is the feeling of freedom of choice, and ability to make
decisions for self. Competence is how capable one feels, being confident in their actions, and
relatedness means the connection that one feels towards and with others. For students in an

When we think business, we think more of a business man. There was an assumption that men are
better than women at mathematical skills, when that is not the case. Women actually tend to
underestimate their mathematical skills on surveys when they know they are being compared to
other male students. Jobs such as engineers, computer manufacturers, mathematicians are viewed
more of a male job and they all involve strength in mathematics. Classes that focus on the area of one
of those jobs, will likely consist more of men than female. The environmental stressor in this
situation being that if more men are in the field, it must mean they are slightly better and that those
job skills come more naturally to them. Therefore, when surveyed among other male students,
women fell under the pressure of these social factors, but when tested, they are just as smart as men

10. Definition Essay On Determination
DETERMINATION Determination is something that is in you. Most people have determination in
them whether they are trying to get better at a sport, get better grades,do something new, etc. But
other people don't really care much about determination such as lousy and lazy people. Those kind
of people want you to do everything for them and they get asked to do something and don't do
anything about it. They are people that don't have determination and don't realize that they could
be a better person if they had it. Determination and commitment are like a little person inside of
you. While you do anything such as playing a sport just know that while you are practicing the
little person in you is working harder and it's all on you to work just as hard. Basically, if you
want to play football and get better you can't be a lazy person you have to reach your limit and
have an even bigger goal. If you were at 0% and if you worked hard everyday that would get you
to 100% but you can't be lazy. This is what determination is. Don't expect yourself to get better

Jeanette is the one who decides to do something with her life, while Maureen continues to let her

Motivation plays a big role in a person's life. It allows you to set goals and build confidence.
However, a person is not born motivated, it is something you must find within yourself to achieve

She has played soccer since she was five years old. She grew up with many challenges on and off

Being an athlete, nutrition plays a major role in this person's program. When it comes to her body
weight, she regularly motivates herself to lose weight so she can be quicker and stronger to play her

The interviewee's overall outcome is for her to reward herself by improving so she can earn more
playing time. Although her ultimate reward is starting in a game, she is happy just knowing she
always puts in great effort and gives it her all.
One obstacle the subject sometime faces is her confidence. When she is not motivated at a training
session, it frustrates her and she begins to temporarily lack motivation. This causes her to have
thoughts of making excuses to stop training. However, when the thought of making excuses appears,
she ignores them, finds the strength to push forward, and completes her tasks. Finishing tasks in
difficult circumstances reveals a strong intrinsic motivation on her part.
When it comes to feedback after a task, the interviewee is motivated in a different manner. She
completely disregards positive feedback, choosing to focus on critical comments for her mistakes.

In society today, many people judge others by their actions, appearance, and words without

probably because my uncle has inspired me to try my hardest even if there are obstacles standing

I have become determined due to a couple of changes that have happened in my life. The first
reason is something that almost none of my friends know about. When I was 10, my uncle was

protective covering of the nerves. His disease has gotten progressively worse where he is now
unable to walk and has to have an assist dog. He struggles in his everyday life because he can not

shown me that I have to live each day to the fullest and never give up even if there are challenges
standing in my way. I have become determined because my uncle has also shown me that any of
these days could be my last and I should not settle for an okay life. Another one of my motivations
to be determined has happened to me more recently. In March, I got really sick and found out that
I had Type 1 Diabetes. This disease affects me in my everyday life similar to my uncle. With this
disease I see the world much differently than I did before and have found that I have to work

One competency that I have embodied through my educational career thus far is my determination.
Examples of this determination have shown in my perpetual struggle with mathematics. Ever
