THE HISTORY AND STABILITY OF THE PHILIPPINES "A nation's culture resides in the
hearts and in the soul of its people (Ghandi, Mahatma 2017). For about the first time this lush land
was discovered, the Filipinos have always been proud of their culture, their religion, customs and
beliefs. A part of their culture is transmitted through their various languages, material objects,
rituals, institution, and art from one generation to the next. They, like any other country had its
ups and downs with things they're not so proud of like their stability financially and with their
government. But despite that, the Philippines have more to offer than just their land and what the
land has to offer other countries for they literally are still fighting their own wars within
themselves and the country is still going through turmoil then and now. In 1521, a Portuguese
explorer named Ferdinand Magellan was discovering lands for Spain and came across a body of
islands which stretched across the seas, which became known as the Philippines; officially known
as the Republic of the Philippines (Lambert, Tim). Since Magellan was working in Spain at that
time, He was able to claim the island for Spain. But a few months later, Magellan was killed during
a tribal warfare against the Lapu–Lapu's Army on the Mactan Island. Because of that, the Spaniard

claim to be different tribes choosing to be one nation. And the more freedom they get in promoting
their own subcultures, the more unified they will be.
Under the 1951 Mutual Defense Treaty the Republic of the Philippines and the United States became
treaty allies. Both nations share strategic interests, with that the Philippines rely on the U.S. for its
outer security. However in 1991, their senate revoked the U.S.'s Military Base Agreement with the

As a general rule, the activities of the cultural centres are free or very affordable, so that nobody be

Filipinos are the second largest Asian group in the United States. In the past data has been hard to
obtain about Filipino Americans, primarily because of inconsistences in coding race and ethnicity in
research projects. Demographics of Filipino Americans did not start being properly recorded until
the early twentieth century, when the Filipino Islands became part of the United States territory. Even
with the limited data, they have gathered enough information on the Filipino culture. Filipino
American beliefs differ drastically from that of Americans, such as their culture, health rituals and
religious practices that may make healthcare more difficult (Dela Cruz, 2010).
Studies of the Filipino American health practices show that Filipinos who reside in a rural area are
more knowledgeable in home remedies, super natural ailments, traditional healing techniques, where
those from urban areas rely more on WesternMedicine and over the counter drugs. In both settings,
indigenous folk and western medicine is used simultaneously. A popular self–medication among
these groups is Chinese hot/cold application system (Pasma), and Chinese oils which sometimes
perceived as a remedy to all ailments such as headaches, dizziness, relaxing, or the common cold. If
home remedies do not work, many seek a local healer who uses treatments which includes roots and
herbs.

other Asian countries. Younger Filipinos recognize individuality but still strives to conform to group
norms to maintain harmony. Most Filipinos emphasize the importance of establishing lasting and
trustworthy relationships prior to the actual negotiation process and agreement. Typically, Filipinos
only do business with people they like and this involves getting to know some personal details

What is my cultural identity? What does cultural identity mean? If culture includes one's native
language, customs, beliefs, artistic characteristics, philosophies, theologies, norms, mores, and
community, then my culture is Pilipino. Filipinos are the people who are native to, or identified
with the country of the Philippines. Filipinos come from various ethnolinguistic groups. Currently,
there are more than 175 ethnolinguistic groups, each with its own language, identity, culture and
history. The modern Filipino identity, with its Austronesian roots, was developed in conjunction

The family is still a stronger influence, even during adolescence. Television and radio are the two
most popular forms of media: kids love to watch Saturday morning cartoon shows while older youth
tend to prefer the radio. Most songs communicate themes of honor, respect, and responsibility to
family values. Other themes in songs are about love, dreams of happiness, and relationships with
sad endings. Films are popular and have been enjoyed even before video stores became prevalent.
Theaters and televisions ushered the "outside" world into my life. Those "outside" views depicted
on the screens were forbidden in my family; yet, family values of honor, respect, integrity, goodness

comfort of my family and community to attend college in a totally different environment that I

In a profession such as nursing, being aware of diverse cultural practices can help individuals
provide the best care possible. According to Larry Purnell, there are twelve domains pertaining to
culture that can define how unconsciously or consciously we are either competent or incompetent.
These domains include heritage, communication, family roles, workforce, bicultural ecology,
high–risk behaviors, nutrition, pregnancy and childbearing, death rituals, spirituality, health care
practice, and health care practitioners. To expand my knowledge on these domains pertaining to
Filipino culture, I interviewed Joseph A. His mother emigrated to the United States over 25 years ago
from the Philippines, and has ensured that their family stays true to many Filipino traditions,
including speaking their native language of Tagalog at home.
Family Roles and Organization
In Filipino culture, family is the most important thing to them and everything is centered on family.
In his household, his mother does the cooking, cleaning, and sets the rules for the children. Joseph
and his brother do all the heavy lifting, errands, and driving in the family. Overall, children are
expected to do all that is asked of them, and work hard in school to ultimately attend college.

a standard for the way norms and issues are taken care of in everyday life. The arts bring out the
creativity and imagination a country's culture has to offer. A country's culture is much more the
distinctions between other nations. It is a gateway to the heart and soul of the people and the
Philippines demonstrates just how powerful culture can be for their nation as well as the rest of
