Routine Hand washing Technique — Presentation Transcript
• 1. DR. LORENA C. BALACANAO Hand washing technique
• 2. Hand washing technique It is one of the most effective way to reduce spread of infection E.g. it
also reduce the risk of transfer of nosocomial infection It is done before and after each treatment
procedure
• 3. Important things to remember 1. Hand washing is done under the stream of water for at least
10-15 seconds 2. Antimicrobial soaps or granule soap or bar soap are use in this procedure
• 4. Techniques 1. Hands are held down (below the elbows) when they are soiled with body
substances and during routine hand washing procedure so that microorganisms are washed directly
into the sink. 2. FOR SURGICAL ASEPSIS- hands are held above the elbows so that the water
runs from the cleanest to the least clean area.
• 5. Routine Hand washing technique A 1. Prepare the things needed in hand washing technique

• 7. Assess hands B 1. Checks hands for breaks in the skin, such as hangnails or cuts.
• 8. Position of feet C 1. Balance the position of your feet to provide stability
• 9. D 1. Remove watch and jewelries note: microorganism can lodge in the setting of jewelry
Removal facilitates proper cleaning of the hands and arms

• 12. Adjust water Adjust the flow so that the water is warm Warm water removes less protective oil
of the skin than hot water

• 14. Apply soap to the hands. Liquid soap- apply 2 to 4 ml ( 1tsp). Bar soap – rub it firmly between
the hands
• 15. Make a lather by rubbing the palms of your hands Use firm rubbing and circular movement to
wash the palm
• 16. Change position- rub the dorsal part of your hand
• 17. Do the same thing to the other hand
• 18. Interlace the fingers and the thumb move the hands back and forth
• 19. Clean every digits of the hands
• 20. Cleaning of the digits starts from the proximal to the distal part
• 21. Do the same thing to other hand
• 22. Clean the finger tips of both hands
• 23. Rinsing Rinse the hands thoroughly

• 27. Thoroughly dry the hands and arms Use paper towel to dry hands thoroughly Moist skin
becomes chapped readily thus making it prone to lesions Discard the paper in the appropriate
container
• 28. Turn off the water Use paper towel to grasp a hand operated control To prevent picking up
microorganisms from the faucet handle
