A little history, boring but important,[object Object],The first volleyball net, borrowed from tennis, was only 6'6" high.,[object Object],The offensive style of setting and spiking was first demonstrated in the Philippines in 1916. Over the years that followed, it became clear that standard rules were needed for tournament play, and that’s whenthe USVBA (United States Volleyball Association) was formed in 1928.,[object Object]

Two years later, the first 2-man beach volleyball game was played, though the professional side of the sport did become big until later on. A TIMELINE OF SIGNIFICANT VOLLEYBALL EVENTS.,[object Object],In 1900, a special ball was designed for the sport.,[object Object],In 1916, in the Philippines, an offensive style of passing the ball in a high trajectory to be struck by another player (the set and spike) were introduced.,[object Object],In 1917, the game was changed from 21 to 15 points.,[object Object],In 1920, three hits per side and back row attack rules were instituted.,[object Object],In 1922, the first YMCA national championships were held in Brooklyn, NY. 27 teams from 11 states were represented.,[object Object]

In 1928, it became clear that tournaments and rules were needed, the United States Volleyball Association (USVBA, now USA Volleyball) was formed. The first U.S. Open was staged, as the field was open to non-YMCA squads.,[object Object],In 1930, the first two-man beach game was played.,[object Object],In 1934, the approval and recognition of national volleyball referees.,[object Object],In 1937, at the AAU convention in Boston, action was taken to recognize the U.S. Volleyball Association as the official national governing body in the U.S.,[object Object]

In 1947, the Federation Internationale De Volley-Ball (FIVB) was founded.,[object Object],In 1948, the first two-man beach tournament was held.,[object Object],In 1949, the initial World Championships were held in Prague, Czechoslovakia.,[object Object],In 1964, Volleyball was introduced to the Olympic Games in Tokyo.,[object Object],In 1965, the California Beach Volleyball Association (CBVA) was formed,[object Object]

In 1974, the World Championships in Mexico were telecast in Japan.,[object Object],In 1975, the US National Women's team began a year-round training regime in Pasadena, Texas (moved to Colorado Springs in 1979, Coto de Caza and Fountain Valley, CA in 1980, and San Diego, CA in 1985).,[object Object],In 1977, the US National Men's team began a year-round training regime in Dayton, Ohio (moved to San Diego, CA in 1981).,[object Object],In 1983, the Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) was formed.,[object Object],In 1984, the US won their first medals at the Olympics in Los Angeles. The Men won the Gold, and the Women the Silver.,[object Object]

In 1986, the Women's Professional Volleyball Association (WPVA) was formed.,[object Object],In 1988, the US Men repeated the Gold in the Olympics in Korea.,[object Object],In 1990, the World League was created.,[object Object],In 1995, the sport of Volleyball was 100 years old!,[object Object],In 1996, 2-person beach volleyball will be an Olympic Sport.,[object Object]

Bump, Set, Spike,[object Object],There are three hits on a side.,[object Object],First a bump, then a set, and then a spike.,[object Object]

ACTIVITY!,[object Object],Get into groups of 3 and practice the bump set and spike. Once you all get a chance to try all three hits, come back to your seats.,[object Object]

Communication activity,[object Object],Get into groups of no more than four, and come up with six words that will work well on the court. When you are done, get back into your group of three and see how well the words help with the neatness of your game.,[object Object]

Rules of the game,[object Object],There are six basic rules of the game,[object Object], the serve,[object Object], scoring,[object Object], rotation,[object Object], volley,[object Object], basic violations,[object Object], the court,[object Object]

The Serve,[object Object],The server must serve from behind the end line until after contact. ,[object Object],The ball may be served underhand or overhand. ,[object Object],The ball must be clearly visible to opponents before serve. ,[object Object],The served ball may graze the net and drop to the other side for point. ,[object Object],The serve must be returned by a bump or set only. You CANNOT attack or block a serve,[object Object]

Scoring,[object Object],Rally scoring will be used. ,[object Object],There will be a point scored on every score of the ball. ,[object Object],Offense will score on a defense miss or out of bounds hit. ,[object Object],Defense will score on an offensive miss, out of bounds hit, or serve into the net. ,[object Object],Game will be played to 25 pts. ,[object Object],Must win by 2 points. ,[object Object]

Rotation,[object Object],Team will rotate each time they win the serve. ,[object Object],Players shall rotate in a clockwise manner. ,[object Object],There shall be 4-6 players on each side.,[object Object]

Volley,[object Object],Maximum of three hits per side. ,[object Object],Player may not hit the ball twice in succession ( A block is not considered a hit ). ,[object Object],Ball may be played off the net during a volley and on serve. ,[object Object],A ball touching a boundary line is good. ,[object Object], If two or more players contact the ball simultaneously, it is considered one play and the players involved may not participate in the next play. ,[object Object],A player must not block or attack a serve. ,[object Object],Switching positions will be allowed only between front line players. ( After the serve only ). ,[object Object]

Violations,[object Object],Stepping on or over the line on a serve. ,[object Object],Failure to serve the ball over the net successfully. ,[object Object],Hitting the ball illegally ( Carrying, Palming, Throwing, etc. ). ,[object Object],Touches of the net with any part of the body while the ball is in play. If the ball is driven into the net with such force that it causes the net to contact an opposing player, no foul will be called, and the ball shall continue to be in play. ,[object Object]

More violations,[object Object],Reaching over the net, except under these conditions: ,[object Object],1 - When executing a follow-through. ,[object Object],2 - When blocking a ball which is in the opponents court but is being returned ( the blocker must not contact the ball until after the opponent who is attempting to return the ball makes contact). Except to block the third play. ,[object Object],Reaches under the net ( if it interferes with the ball or opposing player ). ,[object Object],Failure to serve in the correct order. ,[object Object]

The court,[object Object],PLAYING AREA ,[object Object],Both indoor and outdoor courts are 18 m x 9mi (29'6" x 59').Indoor courts also include an attack area designated bya line 3 m (9'10") back from the center line.Lines on the court are 5cm (2" wide).NET HEIGHT Net height for men, co-ed mixed 6, & outdoor is 2.43 meters or 7'11-5/8".Net height for women, 7'4-1/8".The height of the net shall be 8'.BALLThe ball weighs between 9 and 10 ounces. Ball pressure is between 4.5 and 6.0 pounds,[object Object]

Lingo,[object Object],Ace- When the ball is served to the other team, and no one touches it.,[object Object],Sideout- When the team that served the ball makes a mistake, causing the ball to go to the other team.,[object Object],Roof- When a player jumps above the height of the net, and blocks the ball. ,[object Object],Stuff-When a player jumps above the height of the net, blocks the ball, and the ball goes back at the person who attacked(spiked) the ball.,[object Object],Dig- When a player makes a save from a very difficult spike. ,[object Object],Kill- When a team spikes the ball and it either ends in a point or a sideout. ,[object Object]
