Text 1: Fairy Tale (?)
What elements/characters
  do you expect to find?
Audience for a fairy tale?
What IS a fairy tale?
 A traditional story written for children which
 usually involves imaginary creatures and magic.
 A type of short story that typically features
 folkloric fantasy characters, such as fairies,
 goblins, elves, trolls, dwarves, giants, mermaids
 or gnomes, and usually magic or
 enchantments. However, only a small number
 of the stories refer to fairies.

21st Century Princess
A princess is an important female
member of a royal family, especially
a daughter or granddaughter of a
king and queen, or the wife of a
prince.
1st task: List 5 characteristics of a
princess. (3 minutes)
Beginning of the story..
           Once upon a time, in a land far away,
      a beautiful, independent, self-assured princess
      happened upon a frog. As she sat, contemplating
                        ecological issues
      on the shores of an unpolluted pond in a verdant
                     meadow near her castle.

1. Happen upon/on: to find or meet something or someone by chance.
2. Contemplate:to spend time considering a possible future action, or to
     consider one particular thing for a long time in a serious and quiet way.
3. Verdant:covered with healthy green plants or grass.
Whole class discussion:

Which elements “differ”
 from your CONCEPT of
   princess/fairy tale?
Middle of the story…
   The frog hopped into the princess's lap and said: Elegant Lady,
 I was once a handsome prince, until an evil witch cast a spell upon
                                    me.
   One kiss from you, however and I will turn back into the dapper,
                         young prince that I am!
                                ~~~~~~~
And then, my sweet, we can marry and set up housekeeping in your
                                   castle
with my mother, where you can prepare my meals, clean my clothes,
                            bear my children,
             and forever feel grateful and happy doing so.
  Spell:spoken words which are thought to have magical power, or (the
  condition of being under) the influence or control of such words
  Dapper: describes a man who is dressed in a fashionable and tidy way
  Set up: prepare,organize,make arrangements
Task 2:
List 3 characteristics of the prince you
infer from the story. Explain why.
Do these characteristics meet your
expectations as regards the CONCEPT
you have on a “prince”?
Ending…
That night, as the princess dined sumptuously on
        a repast of lightly sauteed frog legs,
seasoned in a white wine and onion cream sauce,
       she chuckled and thought to herself:
             I don't fucking think so.
Sumptuous:luxurious and showing that you are rich.
Repast:a meal
Sauteed: cooked in oil or fat over heat, usually until it is brown.
Chuckle: to laugh quietly
In what sense does this ending
    TEAR our concept of fairy
         tale/princess?
 Audience for this “fairy tale”?
Debate:
Gender roles in society
        today.
