The last two factors of attending are to resist tuning out and avoid interruptions. When it comes to
tuning out and interrupting, I have a huge dilemma while communicating with others. Back in high
school, that was one thing that I was good at; tuning out. I even still struggled with it coming into
college. In my first semester at Nassau Community College, a student asked me what we had to
get done on a class assignment and I had completely tuned out because I got easily distracted by

One of my greatest weaknesses was my peers observed me nervously looking at the clock
throughout the meeting. I was not even aware that I was doing that, but I do know that I was
concerned about the time because my other children needed to be picked up from school at a
certain time. My peers stated that I seemed that I was in hurry, and that added a note of
distraction to my listening skills. Another weakness of mine was the act of defensive listening.
Every time a bad behavior was noted in my son, I was obviously offended and seemed to always

I enjoy watching nurses grow in knowledge, skill and confidence and feel great gratification in
helping them grow and develop their skills.

First, you have to develop an effective coach/mentor relationship with the development of mutual
respect. Touch base with you mentee regularly and praise them on jobs well done and goals met.
When constructive criticism is needed, ask them to explain the situation and ask if there is

especially if they are not sure what they should have done differently. Review policies and
procedures with them and give them a copy for easy reference. End the conversation with praise for
specific jobs well done and tell them you have confidence that they will do better in a similar
