Why Do We Eat Food Essay
INTRODUCTION Food can be a hobby and a true lust of life. Sometimes food can actually be life.
We eat food because we need it to live. It is what gives us the nutrients that we need for our bodies
to grow. Another reason we eat food is because of psychological reasons. If we are happy, we eat;
if we are sad, we eat; boredom, depression and loneliness are other reasons that we eat. We also use
food for social needs. When we have friends or family over we usually have some form of food to
offer them, whether it be a light snack or a full meal.Food is a large part of all holidays and
celebrations, not just the major ones we hear about often, but also small everyday family
celebrations. Food and celebrations unite people in the same family, giving them a common bond.
Celebrations of all sorts, and the food that adorns them brings people from all over the world closer
together around one table. And of all methods of cooking BAKING is what I love doing the most.
Unlike other types of cooking, baking doesn't...show more content...
The cakes we eat today were different from the first cakes made in ancient times, as what history
tells. They were more bread–like and sweetened with honey, they often add nuts and dried fruits.
Medieval European bakers often made fruitcakes and gingerbread which could last for many months.
Sometime in the mid–17th century, round cakes with icing were first baked in Europe. Advances in
technology and ingredient availability is what made this possible. The first icing was poured on the
cake and it was usually a boiled composition of the finest available sugar, egg whites and
flavorings. The cake was then returned to the oven for a while. When removed the icing cooled
quickly to form a hard, glossy covering. Many cakes made at this time still contained dried fruits.
The cake we know today arrived on the scene in the middle of 19th century (Olver, L.

When it comes to the topic of nutrition, most us will readily agree that in order to live a long and
healthy life one must eat right and choose nutritious alternatives to preserved and fast food

"Escape from the Western Diet" is an essay that summarizes the stereotypes that are directly
correlated with the western diet. Pollan advocates that society most often chooses food that is
fast, easy, and cheap. For example, fast food restaurants provide food that is inexpensive and
convenient but most people overlook the amount of calories and fat that the food contains. Most
people also overlook the fact that if you chose to eat fast food or processed food, you are more
prone to obtaining diseases such as diabetes, high cholesterol, and heart disease. Pollan claims that
the idea of nutritionalism is the best thing that has happened to society in a while and that it will
ultimately bring "pleasure back into eating." Although many people find pleasure in eating fast and
easy food, in the long run it will not agreeable when it affects your body in a negative way. If more
people in society choose healthier alternatives to food, it will be beneficial in the long run both
physically and emotionally. In recent studies, researchers have found that Americas spend less than a
half hour making food and more than one hour to actually eat the food. Pollan emphasizes that if
individuals spend more time preparing more fruits and veggies, which contain healthier
carbohydrates, in their diet. Pollan also advises that in order to obtain enough nutrients to grow

Food Culture Essay
Factors Influencing Food Habits and Culture Eating food is essential for all of us, it keep us alive
and also gives us enjoyment at the same time. Food can be defined as any substance that can be
metabolized by an animal to give energy and build tissue. (ilearn) In ancient time, when people feel
hungry, they eat. However, as human history keep developing and evolving, we have a higher
standard on choosing food that we like to eat nowadays. In this paper, we are going to evaluate
factors that are influencing our food habits and food culture. Those factors can be divided into two
main categories, internal factors (individual preference and values) and external factors
(geographical, religion, social, economic and political). Internal...show more content...
Another example would be Chinese like to eat hot pot in winter to keep them warm. In the
northern part of China, there are more spicy dishes than the southern part of China. This is
because eating spicy food will keep people warm. In costal region, there is more seafood than the
inland region. The reason is because it is easier to get fresh seafood in costal region than in the
inland region. Japan is an island surrounded by sea, and that is why eating seafood is famous in
Japan. Some locations are better for growing specific food, for example China have the climate
advantage in growing tea, and France have the advantage in growing wine. Religion is another
external factors influencing food habits and food culture. Different culture has different religion,
different religion has different custom and food is an important part of a religion. Some religion
such as Muslims, consider eating pork as a dirty food, and people should not eat them. Buddhism
do not recommend members to eat meat, because they think that is cruel to kill an animal and that
we should respect them so we should not eat them. Therefore, a lot of Buddhism followers are
vegetarians. Hinduism followers do not eat cow because they think that cows are scarce. People
who believe in a religion will follow the rules of the religion, so this will influence their food habit.
Some religions do not have rules about food, but they have specific food to eat.

My Favorite Experience Of Eating Food
As a foodie, eating foods is my favorite thing and I also find my speciality in eating, that is tasting
food and know the condiment in every dishes. When I was a child, I usually go to kitchen to see
adults cooking. My intention is not to learn how to cook, but to know where the dishes that I felt
very delicious from out of curiosity. As time passed, I knew the recipe of every dishes that I like
gradually and learned how to improve it taste. I born at a country that have many delicious foods
and the cuisine like to use many kinds of condiments. Through the process of knowing the recipe of
cuisine, I also learned many condiments and their use. I didn't know I can have the skill that I can
know what condiments put in dishes until I was in middle school. Once a time, I taste a food that
cooked by an aunt, then I asked her if this dish used some sugar and Thirteen Spice (a spice that
produced at China) and cooked by olive oil rather than sesame oil. The aunt is very surprised that
I got the whole right condiments. She praised me a lot and said I had this skill that other people
don't have. After that, I begin to notice my gustation and form a habit that Before I eat each dish, I
have to try and guess what kind of seasoning is in it. Until now, I still keep this habit.
The process of tasting is happy for me, I enjoy the feeling that food melt in my mouse and the
flavour disperse gradually. But it also exists some problems, I have the keen taste sense and smell

Food And Its Impact On Society
Everyone on earth needs food to sustain themselves, but have we ever thought to consider what we
put in our mouths? Foods have changed greatly as humans continue to advance technologically. The
greatest change of food however comes from society. The foods that we eat and create are
influenced greatly by societies behaviors and habits. Foods in a culture sometimes represent a
society itself. These habits vary from around the world. The easiest and most efficient way for a
society to sustain itself is to produce its own food. As nomadic societies grew larger they were
forced to settle and become somewhat of a agricultural society to sustain their larger population.
The crops that were produced varied around the world but as the world became more
technologically advanced foods could be anywhere at any time we wanted. As populations rise
people had to find a way to produce a great deal of food in a short amount of time. Back then it
was simple because there were not many mouths to feed. The people of today are concerned
about the health issues of food ever since it was industrialized. According to Texas A and M
university the meat inspection act was made for, " Detection and Destruction of diseased meat and
/or contaminated meat." These laws and acts came in place for concern of the people. Even today
there is controversy with genetically grown foods. There are major benefits to genetically grown
crops such as growing crops fast but there are also concerns. According to

Food Essay : My Favorite Food
Food is the one thing that we cannot live without. Even for those who have developed the
discipline to fast for a specified period, eventually, they must start eating again. We love our food
to the point that recorded in history as being the first sin. Food is something we all enjoy, and
sometimes it shows. Most of the human race eats three to four meals a day, and the selection of
those foods are not a part of the recommended daily allowances. I will share my favorite foods, my
least favorite foods, and the reason I eat the way that I do and what foods I will incorporate for a
balance diet.
For me, my favorite likes are warm–hot rolls. I prefer wheat more than white with lots of butter.
Biscuits with butter and my homemade apple butter or bacon jam. Oh, my it's yummy. I also make
granola bars with some butter smeared on the bottom of the pan. I put the butter on the parchment
paper which is the last step before I place them in the oven for 25 minutes in a low–temperature
oven. Another one of my likes is my butter crГЁme frosting on top of a white or chocolate cake,
and I scoop the frosting off with lays potatoes chips. These are my special treat items that I
occasionally enjoy.
The food that I enjoy the most is Mexican food. Burrito smothered in green chill, Carnitas,
quesadillas, tacos, guacamole, are my favorite picks. With the population of Hispanics being so
large in Colorado my family enjoys eating Mexican food. The Mexican food here in North Carolina

Food and Nutrition Essay
Proper nutrition is one of the most essential elements to being healthy and living a long life.
People deal with food every day, and food has been a part of life since the beginning of
civilization. What we eat becomes our diet, and our diet plays a major role in deciding how
healthy we are and how well our body functions. Without proper diet, our body cannot carry out the
functions it needs to perform. Most people have some common knowledge on what is good and
what is bad for the human body to consume. Fruits, vegetables, nuts, and grains are some common
items people think of when they think of healthy foods. However, it is not enough just to know
what foods are good for your body, it is also important to understand why certain foods are...show

These include obesity, diabetes, and several heart conditions. Obesity is the term used for
someone who qualifies as significantly overweight. A BMI (Body Mass Index) records weight in
relation to height. A BMI of 25 is overweight and a BMI of 30 is obese. Obesity is not a disease in
its self but it can lead to different health issues, some fatal. Obesity can be related to eighty
percent of type two diabetes, seventy percent of cardiovascular disease, thirty percent to gall
bladder surgeries, and forty two percent to breast and colon cancer. Unfortunately, obesity rates
in people are rising rapidly. The United States alone had an obesity rate of twenty six percent in
2007. Some cases of obesity are gene related, but most other cases are a result of improper dieting
and exercise among the individual ("Why Is Proper Nutrition Important?", Case Western Reserve
University). Type II diabetes is another major effect from improper diet and nutrition. When
someone is a type II diabetic, their body either produces too little of an amount of insulin, or their
body's cells ignore the insulin. Insulin is important in helping your body use sugar for Kavanaugh 3
energy. When a person consumes food with sugar, the sugar is broken down into glucose. Glucose
is used as an energy source for the body and is transported throughout your blood into the cells by
insulin. Without proper amounts of insulin, your body is unable to use the glucose as

My Passion For Food
Pleasure, survival, passion, greed, and enjoyment all link to one thing and that is food. There are
those who are privileged enough to eat food for pleasure, those who eat for survival, and those
who eat because of stress and so much more. Some people have so much passion for food they
make a career out of it; while those who don't just enjoy the gift they create. I, on the other hand,
have a hate–love relationship with food: I eat it when I'm hungry, when I am stressed, and when I'm
sad. At the end, I always end up feeling guilty for eating too much or too little. In fact, there's times
when I think about food more than I should and then again there are times when I don't think about
it at all. Neither of those options are healthy. I try to make good choices by eating veggies, fruits,
and nuts and try to avoid meat. I try to have a plant based diet only, but I still eat meat when I have
no other choice since my parents are the ones who cook. They got to pick what my sister and I
ate unless we were asked if we wanted something in particular. To begin with, my relationship
with food hasn't been great. For one, I am a picky eater, which is one of the reasons why I don't
enjoy meat. Secondly, I used to binge eat, then I would feel guilty about it and would throw it up.
As disgusting as that sounds, my beginning stages of bulimia are a big reason why I decided to
change my diet and try a healthier alternative; however, I still slip once in awhile and make terrible

Food Waste Essay
Food Waste Position/Proposal
By Natalie Parisi
An Introduction to the Problem
Food waste is something that affects us all. It happens anywhere food has a presence; the grocery
store, restaurants, in our homes, at schools, on farms, in production and even in transportation. It
affects people everywhere; those living oceans away and those that share our boarders, people living
across America and throughout Utah, businesses and households alike.
Being Aware is a Personal Responsibility
So is the problem food waste itself, or that food is being thrown out when there are alternative
options? Or is it that we just don't stop to consider there is a problem? My concern is that it's not a
priority for most people. In addition, there are...show more content...
(Sklamberg, par.3)
Claiming Ownership
In our homes waste caused because we don't pay attention; we are inattentive and ignorant. For some
of us, it just isn't important. (Jones, Dive!)
Wasting food is a bad habit that affects all of society and we continue to implicate ourselves in
the problem. Of the total of food loss that is going on about 40 percent is in the household. Overall a
typical household of four loses about 600 dollars in food a year. (Jones 11)
Like many things, we just don't bother or we don't feel that we have the time. We aren't realizing
how much it affects each of us. Have you ever taken the time to stop and think about it?
Thinking about it, I realize that every day I throw something away that could be saved and eaten
later. When I take the trash out there are a number of food items that don't need to be there. After
we finish dinner I am wiping food off of plates and realizing that I've made too much. Every time I
clean out the fridge there is food going into the garbage because I waited too long to use it.
Whatever the reason, I realize that it does affect me in many ways and it's constantly happening in
my home.
Looking at the Impacts of Food Waste
Food Waste affects our pocket book because we are essentially throwing out money. At the same
time it is impacting us financially it's also playing a huge role in the problems we see happening to
our environment.
The US Environment Protection Agency said, "Generating food waste

Food Relationships
Food Relationships The past few days I have been trying to change my fast food eating habits.
Unfortunately, this
weekend was my official departure from the healthy diet I have been trying, and I mean trying hard,
to
eat all semester long. While, I have been better about exericse, diet on the other hand, has been my
demise! My girlfriend has been cooking me some spinach, baked chicken, rice, fish, lean beef and
pork, tofu and plenty of other nutritious foods. However, that came to a screeching halt this weekend.
I have been eating plenty of protein lately, but my body was screaming for carbohydrates! As a
result, I succumbed to a three piece extra crispy, dark meat chicken meal from KFC. That, plus the
sweet corn and cheesy macaroni as side dishes, released more endorphins than a marathon runner's
high!
Unfortunately, the fat and calorie rife meal of a lifetime, after several but fish, chicken breast, pork
and water, did not end with Colonel Sanders brand of comfort food. After eating such high calorie,
high fat foods, I figured my attempt to keep healthy was ruined. I started to have sugar cravings. I
don't mean fruit sugars, I mean cake batter and cookies and cream flavored yogurt topped with
mini M&M's, cheesecake pieces and gummy bears! Baskin Robbins was right across the street, so I
took myself there and ate a double dipped waffle cone with all the toppings and trimmings.
Truth is, fast food is cheap, tastes great, and much

Food Identity
Food plays a major role in defining our identity. Whether one is aware of it or not, our food
preference gives a sense of one's culture. Many times, when ask someone what they like to eat; they
will fluently dictate the food, the kind, and the taste. However, if you ask them why, they are usually
inarticulate in explaining it. Therefore, since food is intertwined with culture, then, by scrutinizing
and knowing one's taste of food would surely direct us to his cultural background. And it happens
because as human beings, authenticity matters to our identity as a cultural group, or even personal.
But if we ponder on that, it is quite mind–blowing the fact that we can by simply look at one taste of
food, and can tell about their background. For...show more content...
The black pork is known as a national animal. It is a cross between a pig, which was imported to
Haiti during the Columbus Days, and the wild boar, which is native the island. Haiti which was
colonized by France, profited from a pig which the France brought into the island for their own
consumption. However, it is believed that the Island already had possessed boars. Thus, during
their breaking apart, 'Haiti' and France, the island ended up with the pigs and the boars which are

western portion of the island of Hispaniola namely the French, African, Tainos natives, and Spanish.
For this reason, it is almost impossible to track the origin of the Griyo's dish. Haitian Marinade is
made of shallot, minced, onion, chopped garlic clove, a little of water, Adobo, baking soda, flour,
olive oil. It is estimated that Shallots probably originated in Central or Southeast Asia, travelling
from there to India and the eastern Mediterranean. However, Archaeologists and food historians

One of the biggest struggles in my life tends to be food. I love eating, but at the same time, I rather

beyond my fears and gorge on food. Located in Wrightsville beach, Poe's Tavern tends to be one of
my favorite places to eat to feel satisfied after a meal, and fascinated as a literary fanatic throughout
the entire experience. This restaurant has been created in honor of the author and poet, Edgar Allan

Reflective Essay About Food
Food brings everyone together no matter what culture you are in. Culture is a way of life shared
by a group of people, beliefs, customs, symbols and etc. Many families can spend time with each
other by preparing and eating dinner at the table, going out for dinner or just celebrating holidays. In
my family, when we eat at the dinner table, we talk about our day and build better bonds through
our interactions. My mother cooks the meal, my sisters and I set up the table with utensils and
place mats and my father is ready to eat. We all sit at the table, no technology, elbows off the table
and we give grace. While we eat, we talk about our day or anything exciting has happened and we
argue and laugh with each other.
Being in my family, we have made many traditions that have been part of my culture since I was a
kid. Going to Disneyland is one of the traditions we have. The entire family would go come to
have a good time with each other. Since we were a big family, it would be too expensive to buyfood
for everyone so we make sandwiches. Everyone would contribute to bring food, my parents would
bring bread, my uncles would bring the meats and veggies and my aunts would bring chips and
sodas. Being a hispanic family, we would also bring black beans with bread. Since its too much to
carry, we would meet up at the cars in the parking structure and eat in the cars. The sandwiches
weren't just ordinary sandwiches, the bread which call " pan frances" basically french bread.

The Effects Of Food On The Body Essay
Food
Food is any nourishing substance that is eaten, drunk or otherwise taken into the body to sustain life.
Food supplies nutrients to perform important functions in the body. Nutrients are substances that
provide energy for physical activities, for digestion and for regulation of body temperature and also
provide materials for the growth and repair of the body, and for keeping the immune system healthy.
If these nutrients are not present in our food in sufficient amount, could lead to ill health and in
severe cases, death.
The human body requires a wide range of nutrients to stay healthy such as 'macronutrients '
micronutrients, water and fiber. A macronutrient is a major nutritional component present in
relatively large amounts, such as carbohydrates, protein, and fat. Micronutrients, also major
nutritional components that are present in relatively small amounts, such as vitamins & minerals.
The body also needs water, which is needed for every process that the body performs, it is necessary
for digestion, absorption, circulatory and excretory function. Fiber helps to move food through the
digestive system, it is not digested but it helps in the easy elimination of food and prevents
constipation
Many other non–nutritive components also present in food such as colors (natural and synthetic),
flavors, additives, dietary fiber, phytochemicals, flavonoids and various contaminants such as
pesticides which can have a significant impact on health, whether beneficial or toxic.

In food service it is important to realize and address hot button issues within the industry to begin to
understand what the target market wants, increase revenue and decrease cost centers. In researching
the increasingly pressing issue of food sustainability in global food service it was discovered that
implementations are initially expensive and require large amounts of dedication but are ultimately
huge factors in increasing brand loyalty and recognition and gaining popularity within the "green"
market segment. It was the goal of this paper to outline specific concerns posed by the issue of food
sustainability as well as methods of the industry's participation in its solutions and to analyze the

Additionally, on a socio–cultural level, many consumers feel that restaurants partaking in green
initiatives and operations are doing their part to not only help sustain the earth but also to
conserving natural resources (Hu, Parsa & Self, 2010). "Going green" is not simply a trend in the
food service industry but around the world and in all forms of business. Corporate companies
consider "going green" as a sensible business strategy in building recognition for corporate social
responsibility among consumers concerned with environmental conservation efforts. Lastly,
technological initiatives such as Energy Star appliances (dishwashers, refrigerators, ice machines,
etc.) and faucets that use less water must also be analyzed in their ecological conservation capability
and weighed against their financial costs (University of Notre Dame, 2014).
"Reduce, reuse, and recycle" is a motto that pioneered environmental programs in schools, and public
announcements. This motto also holds true in the food service industry. Following the trend to "go
green" means implementing this motto into restaurant operations. This includes procedural changes
that aim to reduce the amount of resources used, attempting to reuse resources, and recycling those
that cannot be reused. Restaurants can move toward more sustainable food service through the

Persuasive Essay About Food Bank
Food banks are a terrible solution to a terrible issue. Hunger is one of the biggest issues the
human race experiences. One in nine people in the world, or 795 million people, out of the 7.4
billion people go hungry every day because they do not have enough to eat. Every 10 seconds, a
child dies from hunger–related diseases (The Hunger Project, 2017). The way lots of organizations
try to help these people in need are through food banks. A foodbank is a non–profit, charitable
organization that distributes to those who have difficulty purchasing enough food to avoid hunger.
Food banks are inefficient in aspects of time, money, and effort because so much more can be done
through donations of money, not non–perishable foods and items....show more content...
Another issue arises though, it needs to be transported from the warehouse to the appropriate
drop–off place, which is most likely in a high–density residential area, not an industrial area. The
time it takes for all this to happen is simply too much and non–efficient. We are in an era where time
is valuable. Everyone is so busy with their lives, be it for work, school, family, or hobbies, it is
unnecessary to spend all this time just to donate something that not even the buyer would eat. To
show an example, let's say a donator's name is David. David works a 9–5 job which pays $20 per
hour and has three kids, two of which have swimming practice after school. David picks up his
kids at 5:30, and goes home right in time for dinner. On his dinner table, he has high quality foods
that are packed with nutrients. David remembers there's a food drive raffle near his workplace that
is looking for donations for a chance to win a grand prize. David now has to go out of his way to go
to a grocery store to buy non–perishable foods. Instead of wasting his time going, he can go to the
food bank and simply donate money. If David was planning on spending $5 and 45 minutes for
the whole process, from purchasing the items to dropping them off, he actually spent $20 plus a
few extra dollars for gas. Instead of wasting 45 minutes of his time to get $5 worth of food, he could
easily have donated $25, which go a long way. This will be explained later, but

Food Habits Assignment
The aim of this essay is to try and explain my food choices through three unique surveys that I have
filled in, these being "Food and diet questionnaire", "24hour recall questionnaire and a food variety
survey". These surveys will be affected by personal background which includes the following details:
Age: 20
Gender: Female
Nationality: Australian
Postcode: 3125
Living arrangements: Share house with 3 housemates
Religion: Christian
Study Commitments: Full time university student
Cultural group: Anglo–Australian
Language spoken at home: English
Through these details I am going to explain why my own personal eating habits occur and ways I
can work to improve them.
1/ I do my own shopping and cook my...show more content...
7/ I eat most of my meals in my unit on the couch. I eat while sitting on the couch because I like to
watch the TV while I am eating my meals and also my house mates also tend to eat their main
meals sitting there also and so it becomes a social area and a time for us to catch up on what has
been happening throughout the day as well as watch the TV.
8/ I eat most of my meals with at least one of my three house mates. This is because we share the
same house and we like to talk about our daily activities and find out how each of us is going. It is
also a good time to bring up house issues such as cleaning or maintenance problems that need to be
addressed.
9/ I think that there are things that I would share with people from other cultures because of
Australia's diverse culture which involves eating foods from many other cultures such as Italian
and their pizza and pasta, Chinese and their dim sim and fried rice and Greeks and souvlaki. I also
think there would be some eating patterns which some cultures have would be completely different
from some I have adapted to such as Chinese and their eating of raw fish. I also think that there
would be some groups of people from certain cultures who live in Australia that would only eat food
from their own culture as a sign of respect or pride of their own culture.
10/ If I had to grow and

Food Essays

  • 1. Why Do We Eat Food Essay INTRODUCTION Food can be a hobby and a true lust of life. Sometimes food can actually be life. We eat food because we need it to live. It is what gives us the nutrients that we need for our bodies to grow. Another reason we eat food is because of psychological reasons. If we are happy, we eat; if we are sad, we eat; boredom, depression and loneliness are other reasons that we eat. We also use food for social needs. When we have friends or family over we usually have some form of food to offer them, whether it be a light snack or a full meal.Food is a large part of all holidays and celebrations, not just the major ones we hear about often, but also small everyday family celebrations. Food and celebrations unite people in the same family, giving them a common bond. Celebrations of all sorts, and the food that adorns them brings people from all over the world closer together around one table. And of all methods of cooking BAKING is what I love doing the most. Unlike other types of cooking, baking doesn't...show more content... The cakes we eat today were different from the first cakes made in ancient times, as what history tells. They were more bread–like and sweetened with honey, they often add nuts and dried fruits. Medieval European bakers often made fruitcakes and gingerbread which could last for many months. Sometime in the mid–17th century, round cakes with icing were first baked in Europe. Advances in technology and ingredient availability is what made this possible. The first icing was poured on the cake and it was usually a boiled composition of the finest available sugar, egg whites and flavorings. The cake was then returned to the oven for a while. When removed the icing cooled quickly to form a hard, glossy covering. Many cakes made at this time still contained dried fruits. The cake we know today arrived on the scene in the middle of 19th century (Olver, L. Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Food Essay When it comes to the topic of nutrition, most us will readily agree that in order to live a long and healthy life one must eat right and choose nutritious alternatives to preserved and fast food products. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of how this can "healthy lifestyle" can be obtained. Whereas some are convinced that trusting yourself and your body will lead to better choices, others maintain that eating food in moderation and more fruits and vegetables is the best path to choose. "Today, more than 95% of all chronic disease is caused by food choice, toxic food ingredients, nutritional deficiencies and lack of physical exercise." In other words, there needs to be change in how we go about our daily diet....show more content... "Escape from the Western Diet" is an essay that summarizes the stereotypes that are directly correlated with the western diet. Pollan advocates that society most often chooses food that is fast, easy, and cheap. For example, fast food restaurants provide food that is inexpensive and convenient but most people overlook the amount of calories and fat that the food contains. Most people also overlook the fact that if you chose to eat fast food or processed food, you are more prone to obtaining diseases such as diabetes, high cholesterol, and heart disease. Pollan claims that the idea of nutritionalism is the best thing that has happened to society in a while and that it will ultimately bring "pleasure back into eating." Although many people find pleasure in eating fast and easy food, in the long run it will not agreeable when it affects your body in a negative way. If more people in society choose healthier alternatives to food, it will be beneficial in the long run both physically and emotionally. In recent studies, researchers have found that Americas spend less than a half hour making food and more than one hour to actually eat the food. Pollan emphasizes that if individuals spend more time preparing more fruits and veggies, which contain healthier carbohydrates, in their diet. Pollan also advises that in order to obtain enough nutrients to grow Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Food Culture Essay Factors Influencing Food Habits and Culture Eating food is essential for all of us, it keep us alive and also gives us enjoyment at the same time. Food can be defined as any substance that can be metabolized by an animal to give energy and build tissue. (ilearn) In ancient time, when people feel hungry, they eat. However, as human history keep developing and evolving, we have a higher standard on choosing food that we like to eat nowadays. In this paper, we are going to evaluate factors that are influencing our food habits and food culture. Those factors can be divided into two main categories, internal factors (individual preference and values) and external factors (geographical, religion, social, economic and political). Internal...show more content... Another example would be Chinese like to eat hot pot in winter to keep them warm. In the northern part of China, there are more spicy dishes than the southern part of China. This is because eating spicy food will keep people warm. In costal region, there is more seafood than the inland region. The reason is because it is easier to get fresh seafood in costal region than in the inland region. Japan is an island surrounded by sea, and that is why eating seafood is famous in Japan. Some locations are better for growing specific food, for example China have the climate advantage in growing tea, and France have the advantage in growing wine. Religion is another external factors influencing food habits and food culture. Different culture has different religion, different religion has different custom and food is an important part of a religion. Some religion such as Muslims, consider eating pork as a dirty food, and people should not eat them. Buddhism do not recommend members to eat meat, because they think that is cruel to kill an animal and that we should respect them so we should not eat them. Therefore, a lot of Buddhism followers are vegetarians. Hinduism followers do not eat cow because they think that cows are scarce. People who believe in a religion will follow the rules of the religion, so this will influence their food habit. Some religions do not have rules about food, but they have specific food to eat. • 4. My Favorite Experience Of Eating Food As a foodie, eating foods is my favorite thing and I also find my speciality in eating, that is tasting food and know the condiment in every dishes. When I was a child, I usually go to kitchen to see adults cooking. My intention is not to learn how to cook, but to know where the dishes that I felt very delicious from out of curiosity. As time passed, I knew the recipe of every dishes that I like gradually and learned how to improve it taste. I born at a country that have many delicious foods and the cuisine like to use many kinds of condiments. Through the process of knowing the recipe of cuisine, I also learned many condiments and their use. I didn't know I can have the skill that I can know what condiments put in dishes until I was in middle school. Once a time, I taste a food that cooked by an aunt, then I asked her if this dish used some sugar and Thirteen Spice (a spice that produced at China) and cooked by olive oil rather than sesame oil. The aunt is very surprised that I got the whole right condiments. She praised me a lot and said I had this skill that other people don't have. After that, I begin to notice my gustation and form a habit that Before I eat each dish, I have to try and guess what kind of seasoning is in it. Until now, I still keep this habit. The process of tasting is happy for me, I enjoy the feeling that food melt in my mouse and the flavour disperse gradually. But it also exists some problems, I have the keen taste sense and smell over the average, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Food And Its Impact On Society Everyone on earth needs food to sustain themselves, but have we ever thought to consider what we put in our mouths? Foods have changed greatly as humans continue to advance technologically. The greatest change of food however comes from society. The foods that we eat and create are influenced greatly by societies behaviors and habits. Foods in a culture sometimes represent a society itself. These habits vary from around the world. The easiest and most efficient way for a society to sustain itself is to produce its own food. As nomadic societies grew larger they were forced to settle and become somewhat of a agricultural society to sustain their larger population. The crops that were produced varied around the world but as the world became more technologically advanced foods could be anywhere at any time we wanted. As populations rise people had to find a way to produce a great deal of food in a short amount of time. Back then it was simple because there were not many mouths to feed. The people of today are concerned about the health issues of food ever since it was industrialized. According to Texas A and M university the meat inspection act was made for, " Detection and Destruction of diseased meat and /or contaminated meat." These laws and acts came in place for concern of the people. Even today there is controversy with genetically grown foods. There are major benefits to genetically grown crops such as growing crops fast but there are also concerns. According to Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Food Essay : My Favorite Food Food is the one thing that we cannot live without. Even for those who have developed the discipline to fast for a specified period, eventually, they must start eating again. We love our food to the point that recorded in history as being the first sin. Food is something we all enjoy, and sometimes it shows. Most of the human race eats three to four meals a day, and the selection of those foods are not a part of the recommended daily allowances. I will share my favorite foods, my least favorite foods, and the reason I eat the way that I do and what foods I will incorporate for a balance diet. For me, my favorite likes are warm–hot rolls. I prefer wheat more than white with lots of butter. Biscuits with butter and my homemade apple butter or bacon jam. Oh, my it's yummy. I also make granola bars with some butter smeared on the bottom of the pan. I put the butter on the parchment paper which is the last step before I place them in the oven for 25 minutes in a low–temperature oven. Another one of my likes is my butter crГЁme frosting on top of a white or chocolate cake, and I scoop the frosting off with lays potatoes chips. These are my special treat items that I occasionally enjoy. The food that I enjoy the most is Mexican food. Burrito smothered in green chill, Carnitas, quesadillas, tacos, guacamole, are my favorite picks. With the population of Hispanics being so large in Colorado my family enjoys eating Mexican food. • 7. Food and Nutrition Essay Proper nutrition is one of the most essential elements to being healthy and living a long life. People deal with food every day, and food has been a part of life since the beginning of civilization. What we eat becomes our diet, and our diet plays a major role in deciding how healthy we are and how well our body functions. Without proper diet, our body cannot carry out the functions it needs to perform. Most people have some common knowledge on what is good and what is bad for the human body to consume. Fruits, vegetables, nuts, and grains are some common items people think of when they think of healthy foods. However, it is not enough just to know what foods are good for your body, it is also important to understand why certain foods are...show more content... These include obesity, diabetes, and several heart conditions. Obesity is the term used for someone who qualifies as significantly overweight. A BMI (Body Mass Index) records weight in relation to height. A BMI of 25 is overweight and a BMI of 30 is obese. Obesity is not a disease in its self but it can lead to different health issues, some fatal. Obesity can be related to eighty percent of type two diabetes, seventy percent of cardiovascular disease, thirty percent to gall bladder surgeries, and forty two percent to breast and colon cancer. Unfortunately, obesity rates in people are rising rapidly. The United States alone had an obesity rate of twenty six percent in 2007. Some cases of obesity are gene related, but most other cases are a result of improper dieting and exercise among the individual ("Why Is Proper Nutrition Important?", Case Western Reserve University). Type II diabetes is another major effect from improper diet and nutrition. When someone is a type II diabetic, their body either produces too little of an amount of insulin, or their body's cells ignore the insulin. Insulin is important in helping your body use sugar for Kavanaugh 3 energy. When a person consumes food with sugar, the sugar is broken down into glucose. Glucose is used as an energy source for the body and is transported throughout your blood into the cells by insulin. Without proper amounts of insulin, your body is unable to use the glucose as Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. My Passion For Food Pleasure, survival, passion, greed, and enjoyment all link to one thing and that is food. There are those who are privileged enough to eat food for pleasure, those who eat for survival, and those who eat because of stress and so much more. Some people have so much passion for food they make a career out of it; while those who don't just enjoy the gift they create. I, on the other hand, have a hate–love relationship with food: I eat it when I'm hungry, when I am stressed, and when I'm sad. At the end, I always end up feeling guilty for eating too much or too little. In fact, there's times when I think about food more than I should and then again there are times when I don't think about it at all. Neither of those options are healthy. I try to make good choices by eating veggies, fruits, and nuts and try to avoid meat. I try to have a plant based diet only, but I still eat meat when I have no other choice since my parents are the ones who cook. They got to pick what my sister and I ate unless we were asked if we wanted something in particular. To begin with, my relationship with food hasn't been great. For one, I am a picky eater, which is one of the reasons why I don't enjoy meat. Secondly, I used to binge eat, then I would feel guilty about it and would throw it up. As disgusting as that sounds, my beginning stages of bulimia are a big reason why I decided to change my diet and try a healthier alternative; however, I still slip once in awhile and make terrible food Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Food Waste Essay Food Waste Position/Proposal By Natalie Parisi An Introduction to the Problem Food waste is something that affects us all. It happens anywhere food has a presence; the grocery store, restaurants, in our homes, at schools, on farms, in production and even in transportation. It affects people everywhere; those living oceans away and those that share our boarders, people living across America and throughout Utah, businesses and households alike. Being Aware is a Personal Responsibility So is the problem food waste itself, or that food is being thrown out when there are alternative options? Or is it that we just don't stop to consider there is a problem? My concern is that it's not a priority for most people. In addition, there are...show more content... (Sklamberg, par.3) Claiming Ownership In our homes waste caused because we don't pay attention; we are inattentive and ignorant. For some of us, it just isn't important. (Jones, Dive!) Wasting food is a bad habit that affects all of society and we continue to implicate ourselves in the problem. Of the total of food loss that is going on about 40 percent is in the household. Overall a typical household of four loses about 600 dollars in food a year. (Jones 11) Like many things, we just don't bother or we don't feel that we have the time. We aren't realizing how much it affects each of us. Have you ever taken the time to stop and think about it? Thinking about it, I realize that every day I throw something away that could be saved and eaten later. When I take the trash out there are a number of food items that don't need to be there. After we finish dinner I am wiping food off of plates and realizing that I've made too much. Every time I clean out the fridge there is food going into the garbage because I waited too long to use it. Whatever the reason, I realize that it does affect me in many ways and it's constantly happening in my home. Looking at the Impacts of Food Waste Food Waste affects our pocket book because we are essentially throwing out money. At the same time it is impacting us financially it's also playing a huge role in the problems we see happening to our environment. • 10. Food Relationships Food Relationships The past few days I have been trying to change my fast food eating habits. Unfortunately, this weekend was my official departure from the healthy diet I have been trying, and I mean trying hard, to eat all semester long. While, I have been better about exericse, diet on the other hand, has been my demise! My girlfriend has been cooking me some spinach, baked chicken, rice, fish, lean beef and pork, tofu and plenty of other nutritious foods. However, that came to a screeching halt this weekend. I have been eating plenty of protein lately, but my body was screaming for carbohydrates! As a result, I succumbed to a three piece extra crispy, dark meat chicken meal from KFC. That, plus the sweet corn and cheesy macaroni as side dishes, released more endorphins than a marathon runner's high! Unfortunately, the fat and calorie rife meal of a lifetime, after several but fish, chicken breast, pork and water, did not end with Colonel Sanders brand of comfort food. After eating such high calorie, high fat foods, I figured my attempt to keep healthy was ruined. I started to have sugar cravings. I don't mean fruit sugars, I mean cake batter and cookies and cream flavored yogurt topped with mini M&M's, cheesecake pieces and gummy bears! Baskin Robbins was right across the street, so I took myself there and ate a double dipped waffle cone with all the toppings and trimmings. • 11. Food Identity Food plays a major role in defining our identity. Whether one is aware of it or not, our food preference gives a sense of one's culture. Many times, when ask someone what they like to eat; they will fluently dictate the food, the kind, and the taste. However, if you ask them why, they are usually inarticulate in explaining it. Therefore, since food is intertwined with culture, then, by scrutinizing and knowing one's taste of food would surely direct us to his cultural background. And it happens because as human beings, authenticity matters to our identity as a cultural group, or even personal. But if we ponder on that, it is quite mind–blowing the fact that we can by simply look at one taste of food, and can tell about their background. For...show more content... The black pork is known as a national animal. It is a cross between a pig, which was imported to Haiti during the Columbus Days, and the wild boar, which is native the island. Haiti which was colonized by France, profited from a pig which the France brought into the island for their own consumption. However, it is believed that the Island already had possessed boars. Thus, during their breaking apart, 'Haiti' and France, the island ended up with the pigs and the boars which are now using for Griyo. However, although Griyo is a pork, when we are usually referring to it as a whole dish. It contains of Marinades, Plantains, Accra, Griyo or sometimes Chicken, the Haitian style chicken. Haiti's cuisines originate from a blend of several culinary styles that populated the western portion of the island of Hispaniola namely the French, African, Tainos natives, and Spanish. For this reason, it is almost impossible to track the origin of the Griyo's dish. Haitian Marinade is made of shallot, minced, onion, chopped garlic clove, a little of water, Adobo, baking soda, flour, olive oil. It is estimated that Shallots probably originated in Central or Southeast Asia, travelling from there to India and the eastern Mediterranean. However, Archaeologists and food historians cannot figure when did Shallots make it in the Americas. • 12. Descriptive Essay About Food One of the biggest struggles in my life tends to be food. I love eating, but at the same time, I rather not eat. I love trying new foods with exotic flavors and unique recipes, but I fear the reaction that by body will force on me. I have recently been diagnosed with a condition known as dyspepsia. This essentially means my stomach does not enjoy food as much as my mouth does. With each meal, I face the possibility of becoming nauseous after eating. As a result, I tend to avoid large portions, greasy, or overly sweet foods. Although, every now and then, I push my fears of food aside and fully indulge myself in spectacular meals. Poe's Tavern has been the restaurant in which I break beyond my fears and gorge on food. Located in Wrightsville beach, Poe's Tavern tends to be one of my favorite places to eat to feel satisfied after a meal, and fascinated as a literary fanatic throughout the entire experience. This restaurant has been created in honor of the author and poet, Edgar Allan Poe. Poe has been credited as the creator of the mystery and horror genera. He tends to be most well known for his poems and short stories, in which Poe's Tavern glorifies through their restaurant environment as well as food selection. • 13. Reflective Essay About Food Food brings everyone together no matter what culture you are in. Culture is a way of life shared by a group of people, beliefs, customs, symbols and etc. Many families can spend time with each other by preparing and eating dinner at the table, going out for dinner or just celebrating holidays. In my family, when we eat at the dinner table, we talk about our day and build better bonds through our interactions. My mother cooks the meal, my sisters and I set up the table with utensils and place mats and my father is ready to eat. We all sit at the table, no technology, elbows off the table and we give grace. While we eat, we talk about our day or anything exciting has happened and we argue and laugh with each other. Being in my family, we have made many traditions that have been part of my culture since I was a kid. Going to Disneyland is one of the traditions we have. The entire family would go come to have a good time with each other. Since we were a big family, it would be too expensive to buyfood for everyone so we make sandwiches. Everyone would contribute to bring food, my parents would bring bread, my uncles would bring the meats and veggies and my aunts would bring chips and sodas. Being a hispanic family, we would also bring black beans with bread. Since its too much to carry, we would meet up at the cars in the parking structure and eat in the cars. The sandwiches weren't just ordinary sandwiches, the bread which call " pan frances" basically french bread. Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Additionally, on a socio–cultural level, many consumers feel that restaurants partaking in green initiatives and operations are doing their part to not only help sustain the earth but also to conserving natural resources (Hu, Parsa & Self, 2010). "Going green" is not simply a trend in the food service industry but around the world and in all forms of business. Corporate companies consider "going green" as a sensible business strategy in building recognition for corporate social responsibility among consumers concerned with environmental conservation efforts. Lastly, technological initiatives such as Energy Star appliances (dishwashers, refrigerators, ice machines, etc.) and faucets that use less water must also be analyzed in their ecological conservation capability and weighed against their financial costs (University of Notre Dame, 2014). "Reduce, reuse, and recycle" is a motto that pioneered environmental programs in schools, and public announcements. This motto also holds true in the food service industry. Following the trend to "go green" means implementing this motto into restaurant operations. This includes procedural changes that aim to reduce the amount of resources used, attempting to reuse resources, and recycling those that cannot be reused. • 17. Persuasive Essay About Food Bank Food banks are a terrible solution to a terrible issue. Hunger is one of the biggest issues the human race experiences. One in nine people in the world, or 795 million people, out of the 7.4 billion people go hungry every day because they do not have enough to eat. Every 10 seconds, a child dies from hunger–related diseases (The Hunger Project, 2017). The way lots of organizations try to help these people in need are through food banks. A foodbank is a non–profit, charitable organization that distributes to those who have difficulty purchasing enough food to avoid hunger. Food banks are inefficient in aspects of time, money, and effort because so much more can be done through donations of money, not non–perishable foods and items....show more content... Another issue arises though, it needs to be transported from the warehouse to the appropriate drop–off place, which is most likely in a high–density residential area, not an industrial area. The time it takes for all this to happen is simply too much and non–efficient. We are in an era where time is valuable. Everyone is so busy with their lives, be it for work, school, family, or hobbies, it is unnecessary to spend all this time just to donate something that not even the buyer would eat. To show an example, let's say a donator's name is David. David works a 9–5 job which pays $20 per hour and has three kids, two of which have swimming practice after school. David picks up his kids at 5:30, and goes home right in time for dinner. On his dinner table, he has high quality foods that are packed with nutrients. David remembers there's a food drive raffle near his workplace that is looking for donations for a chance to win a grand prize. David now has to go out of his way to go to a grocery store to buy non–perishable foods. Instead of wasting his time going, he can go to the food bank and simply donate money. If David was planning on spending $5 and 45 minutes for the whole process, from purchasing the items to dropping them off, he actually spent $20 plus a few extra dollars for gas. Instead of wasting 45 minutes of his time to get $5 worth of food, he could easily have donated $25, which go a long way. This will be explained later, but Get more content on HelpWriting.net
