Microsoft has embarked on its DevOps journey more than 8 years ago, when it started modeling a new set of engineering tools and practices called One Engineering System (1ES), fully based on their own platforms – Azure DevOps (ex Visual Studio Team Services - VSTS) and Azure. Since then, multiple product development teams have gone through a massive transition in terms of how they organize their work and deal with infrastructure, tools and processes. This session tells the story of the transformation of 70+ teams with more than 800 people that develop Azure DevOps, both Service and Server (ex Team Foundation Server – TFS). These teams have been previously producing the monolithic 3-tier on premises TFS environment every couple of years. Nowadays, they moved to the cloud cadence and deliver daily updates to Azure DevOps Services, their global scale, always available, cloud SaaS service made up of dozens of micro-services. At the same time, they deliver the same capabilities on premises every couple of months. Join us to learn how Microsoft’s teams transitioned from an inert waterfall to a highly performing agile organization, whereby drastically changing the way how they develop, test, deploy and monitor their products. We will explain how they manage large agile distributed product development, how they improved their development process by switching to GIT, how they changed their approach to testing and quality control and managed to take full control over their technical debt.

As engineers we spend much of our time getting stuff to production and making sure our infrastructure doesn’t burn down out right. We however spend very little time learning to understand and respond to outages. Does our platform degrade in a graceful way or what does a high cpu load really mean? What can we learn from level 1 outages to be able to run our platforms more reliably. Plenty of people are jumping on the new hype, Observability, lots of them are replacing their “legacy” monitoring stack. Not all of them achieve the goals they set. But observability is not a tool — it is a property of a system. Moving from many small black boxes to a more holistic view of your system. In this talk we ll talk about how to prepare teams to tweak their testing and monitoring setup and work instructions to quickly observe, react to and resolve problems. We look at improving your monitoring by adapting your culture and then maybe your tooling. Where we as engineers not only write, maintain and operate our software platforms but actively pursue ways to learn and predict its (non-functional) behavior. Furthermore we ll discuss the need for and the options of not only monitoring our platforms and it's envitable outages, but also their (potential) length and impact. We ll look at tools like at using Service Level Objects for ways to prepare teams to tweak their testing and monitoring setup and runbooks to quickly observe, react to and resolve problems.

You think you can program 24 hours a day if you are able to do so. You also think that software development is a profession and you are a member of such a huge great community. You feel proud of what you are belonging to. At this point I am sure that only a very few of you do your profession under the lights of ethics in software development. As in every professions, software development has a common set of ethical values, behaviors and rules. That might be the most forgotten and abandoned area in our profession and my main goal is to trespass it with this presentation. I presented the slides at Voxxed Days Istanbul 2015 Conference on 9th of May, 2015.

Git is one of the most powerful tool in developers' toolbox. If you use it correctly, it dramatically increases productivity of developers and eliminates the waste products continuously. Developers cultivate a development culture on top Git most of the time. It's powerful but its power is untamed. Many teams fall into several traps of misusing commands and therefore feel uncomfortable while using Git. We mess up Git history, the codebase and the whole preferred branching strategy in seconds. We use branches, merge/rebase strategies, creating commits in wrong ways. Even we never take committing paradigms into account while using Git. As a software craftsman, I've been using Git for years and I've already educated Git to hundreds of developers in all levels. I'm so lucky; I had a chance to experience huge amount of anti-patterns in time. In this talk, I will talk about what those anti-patterns are and what should we do in order not to fall into them.

Modeling languages are generally applied for developing systems and software – both internally, with domain-specific languages, and with standardized languages targeting a general purpose and a wide audience. Way too often these languages are weakly created and defined leading to poor quality: Language definitions tend to contain errors and inconsistencies; notations do not recognize the communication and problem-solving needs of humans; standardization organizations push exchange formats that do not fully work and offer certificates that do not measure mastery of the language. We describe common problems in language development and point them out with examples from known cases. To overcome these problems, we suggest several solutions to improve language development, including using modeling languages specifically designed to define modeling languages, continuous testing and prototyping, and keeping language users in the loop.
