Reading Comprehension Strategies
Steps:
1. Look at the pictures and words.
2. Set up a purpose. ( Why do you want to read that story for?)
3. Ask and answer questions. ( About what you see on the pics)
4. Re read ( Read again the story)
5. Summarize (Organize your ideas about what you have read on the
story)
6. Make connections( Try to remember if you have read that before or
seen pictures like those before? )
7. Look out for the new vocabulary(Study the new words)

The story : Rich gets big.
Rich gets big
Rich has a wish to be big. Rich stands to get a branch. He cannot
get it. “Grow just an inch more.!” Mom calls. Rich wants to pitch
and catch. He cannot see the mitt on his shelf. Mom tells Rich, “You
will not be small for long”. Rich sits on his porch with his cat patch,
he thinks he will not grow. Mom brings Rich a chest with
snapshots. Mom was small. Now she is big. “I will grow!” thinks
Rich.
Will Rich get that branch? Yes!
Will Rich get that mitt? Yes!
Event#1.
Rich
tries to
reach
the
branch
and the
mitt.
Event#2.
Rich got sad
because he
couldn’t reach
those two things.

Rich talked to his
Mother about
that situation.

Retelling:
1. What things did Rich try to reach? Rich tried to reach his mitt
and the branch of the tree.
2. What happened when Rich realized that he couldn’t reach any
of those two things? Rich got sad and sat on his porch.
3. Who did help Rich to feel better about his situation? Rich’s
Mom /His Mom did.
4. How did she help him to feel better? She showed him pictures
when she was a Little girl.
5. How did Rich feel after he talked to his Mom? He felt much
better and very happy.
6. Why did Rich feel very happy after he talked to his Mom?
Because he knows now he will grow more.
