SCHOOL ROUTINES:
ORGANISING YOUR MORNING
ROUTINE
It doesn’t matter the age of your child(ren)
the morning routine in the household can
often be chaotic! Here are a few simple
tips that can help ease that pressure!
For Younger Children
 Set aside at least 2-3 minutes in the
wake up routine for a cuddle or quiet
moment asking what they hope to do
that day
 Make sure the kids get out of bed go to
the toilet and at least get dressed
before breakfast
 Ensure there is time for a good
breakfast
 Get the kids to clear their breakfast
dishes from the table
 Move on to the cleaning routine – make
sure they wash their face and hands
and clean their teeth
 Make sure the school bag is packed.
Lunch, drink bottle, school books, any
kit needed for that day, hat, etc
 Have a timetable to check if you are
keeping on track, eg 7.45 am we
should be finishing breakfast, or 8.15
am have we packed the school bags
yet?
 If you are really organised get the kids
to make their bed and tidy their room
before school!
 If practical walk to school it is far less
stressful
Make sure you stick to the same routine
as much as you can. Younger kids enjoy
and relate to familiarity.
Hibiscus Coast Kindergarten - 88 Riverside Rd,

Silverdale Kindergarten - 2 Longmore Lane,

One way to help ease the routine is to have
a schedule of your child’s school timetable
on the wall or fridge. That way you can make
sure you are organised with things like PE
kit, dance shoes, swimming gear or anything
else!
For Older Children
The tweens may be older but can often be
more hard to keep organised.
 Allow more time for the wake up routine –
make regular but not rowdy calls into the
bedroom (until you get beyond your time
allowance for rising!)
 Make sure they have their own written
schedule – they know that if they haven’t
eaten breakfast by 8.15 am they are
pushing things
 Make sure their clothes are set out the
night before
 Make sure you have a curfew for the night
before, this will help immensely with the
wake up routine
 Their routine should allow for them to also
make their own lunches, ensuring they are
wearing a clean uniform and they have all
the necessary equipment or uniform for
each particular day
 It is still a good idea for you to have a copy
of their timetable available – there will no
doubt be times where gentle reminders are
appreciated
Also have a specific place school notices are
placed or pinned – that way you won’t lose
permission slips, notices of outings or
equipment that needs to be provided for a
specific project.
Above all, Stay calm! As long as you allow the
time you should be able to achieve all the
above and actually make the morning time
before school pleasant!

do before going to bed...

routine sorted, make sure the
evening runs smoothly too!

STUDY TIPS FOR BETTER
LEARNING
There is no doubt that just a few tweaks to
a routine or environment can make a huge
difference to anyone’s ability to learn and
retain information. Here are a few tips to
help both yourself, if you work in a home
environment, and your kids make the
learning experience more valuable and
better.
 Create a comfortable working
environment. Have a particular room or
part of a room in which to work. Make
sure the area has a good work surface,
is well lit and has plenty of room to place
books and store required equipment
 Have a study planner in clear view. This can
either just be a schedule to follow or may be
more interactive as a white board to mark
progress or notice board to add notes and
reminders
 Sometimes adding music can be very
beneficial to learning but make sure it is not
a distraction! Some classical music is brain
friendly including Bach, Vivaldi, Handel and
Pachelbel
 Use a calendar, alongside your study
planner, to mark days for upcoming tests
and organise study schedules. Here you can
expand on the study planner notes. Mark
specific topics that need to be studied for a
future test, etc

After School programme. Join the friendly staff down at the HBC Youth Centre for fun filled
afternoons including Indoor Rock Climbing, Art Attack!, Games, Theatre, Outdoor Sports.
Swimming some days so bring your togs!
 Work at your best time of day. It is often
good to allow children a short time (1/2
hour to 1 hour) after school to “wind
down” before starting homework.
However, some people actually work
better in the morning and can get up early
and study. Morning workers need a good
routine though and must stick to it, no
extra lie in!
 Make it clear when you are studying to
the rest of the family to avoid
interruptions
 Track your progress and make sure you
are on track. There’s nothing worse than
getting to 2 days before an exam and
realising you are only half way through
your curriculum revision! Work out at the
beginning how long each topic should
take to study and plan accordingly. Tick
off topics as you reach certain levels and
track this against your time left
 Make it easy on yourself. Always over
allow for time when studying – if a topic
needs at least 2-3 hours to complete
allow 3-4 hours. It is far better and more
conducive to have extra time!
 Be honest with yourself. If you have a test
or project deadline approaching don’t kid
yourself you can go out late the night
before and still get it completed!
Especially around exam time give up
those social nights (or at least some of
them) – don’t worry they’ll still be
happening when the exams are over!
Follow these tips and we’ll see you at the
top!
WHY DO KIDS ‘WAG’ SCHOOL?
OK so all kids have days when they really
don’t feel like school. They don’t have to be
genuinely sick, perhaps they have forgotten
to finish their homework or maybe they don’t
want to have to do PE that day.
Some will just pretend to be sick and stay
home with you but of course, sometimes,
kids pretend to go to school and then
disappear off to do their own thing. The

 They may be being bullied at school
 They may have friends who play truant
 They may be running away from

 They just want to play and have a day off
Whatever the reason often parents are the
last to know so if you are worried look out for
tell tale signs which might include –
 not doing homework
 avoiding conversations about school
 not talking about friends or teachers
 changing the morning school routine
If there have been any changes in your
child’s or family circumstances this can
contribute to a situation like this. Remember
teens are very sensitive and often don’t know
how to express themselves to adults.
If you do discover your child is wagging
school don’t however immediately assume it
is because they are in with a “bad” crowd,
sometimes it may just be that they don’t like
that particular subject, think there is
something better to do or, if they are
particularly bright they may simply be bored.
What is important however is to establish,
why they are doing it and treat it as a
problem to be solved with care and
understanding, not bullying and punishment.
Help them to understand the importance
and value of their learning experiences.
MAKE YOUR WEEKENDS
FAMILY FRIENDLY
How many times do you find yourself saying
on a Sunday night – well the weekend is
over again and we still haven’t done what
we planned!
Routine, Routine, Routine
A word that harbours dread in many but one
that can make your life so much easier! If
you have your week day routines organised
well this will not only free you up at the
weekend but also help create simple
weekend routines.
Plan some of those larger chores for during
the week to free up weekend time. Instead
of washing everything on a Saturday
morning why not do the bulk on a Tuesday
or Wednesday leaving Friday evening or
early Saturday to just wash school uniforms
and work outfits.
Don’t leave cleaning the bathroom basin

until the weekend – wipe it down each day
and then set an evening, perhaps a
Thursday just to go round and give the
bathrooms a thorough clean.
If you are planning a party or friends round
at the weekend, don’t leave the shopping
until Saturday morning and spend the day
cooking. Shop on Thursday and pre-
prepare some of the dishes.
Get the kids to help
For those jobs that do need doing at the
weekend have a roster and get the kids to
help. Not only is this good for their
development and discipline but can help
them appreciate the fun family time, plus it
can be good family time in itself. Chat about
the day and week while folding the washing
with Mum or pulling up weeds with Dad!
Make sure you allocate jobs appropriate to
their age and ability.
Weekend Activities
If your kids are involved in weekend soccer,
cricket or other activities try to streamline
these. Car pool with other parents. Don’t build
up your children’s expectations that you will
watch every single soccer match or ballet
class. It won’t mean you love them any less!
Plan Your Time
Once you have done all the “necessary”
weekend tasks and trips make sure you
actually plan something together so the rest of
the weekend doesn’t fritter away.

ACNE: WHAT IS IT AND WHAT CAN
YOU DO
So what is acne? Acne is a skin condition
that occurs when the oil-secreting glands in
the skin are clogged and become inflamed
or infected.
If you are a teen chances are you will have
some acne with acne being considered by
most as a normal part of development
between a kid and an adult.
Acne can be in the form of whiteheads
(when a pore gets clogged up, closes, and
bulges out from the skin) or blackheads
(when a pore clogs up but stays open).
Pimples are caused when the wall of the
pore is broken and bacteria and dead skin
cells get under the skin.
Kids and teens get acne because of the
hormone changes in puberty. Luckily for
most acne clears by the time you reach
your twenties.
Here are some ways you can help to keep
acne away –

 To help prevent the oil build up wash your
face once or twice a day with warm water
and a mild soap or cleanser
 Don't scrub your face. Scrubbing can
actually make acne worse. Use your
hands to wash not a facecloth
 Keep hair sprays and gels away from your
face as they can clog pores
 If you have long hair, keep it away from
your face and wash it regularly to reduce
oil
 Try not to touch your face
 Make sure any makeup you use is oil free
 Wash your face after exercise or if you
have been sweating a lot
 Don't pick, squeeze, or pop pimples
 Try not to get sunburned
 Avoid extreme stress
 Exercise regularly
 Don’t rest your face in your hands while

 Eat a good balanced diet. Foods good for
acne clearing are deep coloured fruits

Here are a few simple tips that can help ease that pressure! For Younger Children  Set aside at least 2-3 minutes in the wake up routine for a cuddle or quiet moment asking what they hope to do that day  Make sure the kids get out of bed go to the toilet and at least get dressed before breakfast  Ensure there is time for a good breakfast  Get the kids to clear their breakfast dishes from the table  Move on to the cleaning routine – make sure they wash their face and hands and clean their teeth  Make sure the school bag is packed. Lunch, drink bottle, school books, any kit needed for that day, hat, etc  Have a timetable to check if you are keeping on track, eg 7.45 am we should be finishing breakfast, or 8.15 am have we packed the school bags yet?  If you are really organised get the kids to make their bed and tidy their room before school!  If practical walk to school it is far less stressful Make sure you stick to the same routine as much as you can. Younger kids enjoy and relate to familiarity. • 6. One way to help ease the routine is to have a schedule of your child’s school timetable on the wall or fridge. That way you can make sure you are organised with things like PE kit, dance shoes, swimming gear or anything else! For Older Children The tweens may be older but can often be more hard to keep organised.  Allow more time for the wake up routine – make regular but not rowdy calls into the bedroom (until you get beyond your time allowance for rising!)  Make sure they have their own written schedule – they know that if they haven’t eaten breakfast by 8.15 am they are pushing things  Make sure their clothes are set out the night before  Make sure you have a curfew for the night before, this will help immensely with the wake up routine  Their routine should allow for them to also make their own lunches, ensuring they are wearing a clean uniform and they have all the necessary equipment or uniform for each particular day  It is still a good idea for you to have a copy of their timetable available – there will no doubt be times where gentle reminders are appreciated Also have a specific place school notices are placed or pinned – that way you won’t lose permission slips, notices of outings or equipment that needs to be provided for a specific project. Above all, Stay calm! As long as you allow the time you should be able to achieve all the above and actually make the morning time before school pleasant! • 7. STUDY TIPS FOR BETTER LEARNING There is no doubt that just a few tweaks to a routine or environment can make a huge difference to anyone’s ability to learn and retain information. Here are a few tips to help both yourself, if you work in a home environment, and your kids make the learning experience more valuable and better.  Create a comfortable working environment. Have a particular room or part of a room in which to work. Make sure the area has a good work surface, is well lit and has plenty of room to place books and store required equipment  Have a study planner in clear view. This can either just be a schedule to follow or may be more interactive as a white board to mark progress or notice board to add notes and reminders  Sometimes adding music can be very beneficial to learning but make sure it is not a distraction! Some classical music is brain friendly including Bach, Vivaldi, Handel and Pachelbel  Use a calendar, alongside your study planner, to mark days for upcoming tests and organise study schedules. Here you can expand on the study planner notes. Mark specific topics that need to be studied for a future test, etc We Linku2 our recommended … HIBISCUS COAST AFTER SCHOOL, EXTRA CURRICULAR AND SCHOOL HOLIDAY SERVICES The Leisure Centre, 156 Brightside Road, Stanmore Bay, Ph: 424 1914 W: www.theleisurecentre.co.nz - Leisure Kidz school holiday programmes, swimming classes, kids entertainment clubs, groups and activities. • 8.  Work at your best time of day. It is often good to allow children a short time (1/2 hour to 1 hour) after school to “wind down” before starting homework. However, some people actually work better in the morning and can get up early and study. Morning workers need a good routine though and must stick to it, no extra lie in!  Make it clear when you are studying to the rest of the family to avoid interruptions  Track your progress and make sure you are on track. There’s nothing worse than getting to 2 days before an exam and realising you are only half way through your curriculum revision! Work out at the beginning how long each topic should take to study and plan accordingly. Tick off topics as you reach certain levels and track this against your time left  Make it easy on yourself. Always over allow for time when studying – if a topic needs at least 2-3 hours to complete allow 3-4 hours. It is far better and more conducive to have extra time!  Be honest with yourself. If you have a test or project deadline approaching don’t kid yourself you can go out late the night before and still get it completed! Especially around exam time give up those social nights (or at least some of them) – don’t worry they’ll still be happening when the exams are over! Follow these tips and we’ll see you at the top! WHY DO KIDS ‘WAG’ SCHOOL? OK so all kids have days when they really don’t feel like school. They don’t have to be genuinely sick, perhaps they have forgotten to finish their homework or maybe they don’t want to have to do PE that day. Some will just pretend to be sick and stay home with you but of course, sometimes, kids pretend to go to school and then disappear off to do their own thing. • 10.  They just want to play and have a day off Whatever the reason often parents are the last to know so if you are worried look out for tell tale signs which might include –  not doing homework  avoiding conversations about school  not talking about friends or teachers  changing the morning school routine If there have been any changes in your child’s or family circumstances this can contribute to a situation like this. Remember teens are very sensitive and often don’t know how to express themselves to adults. If you do discover your child is wagging school don’t however immediately assume it is because they are in with a “bad” crowd, sometimes it may just be that they don’t like that particular subject, think there is something better to do or, if they are particularly bright they may simply be bored. What is important however is to establish, why they are doing it and treat it as a problem to be solved with care and understanding, not bullying and punishment. Help them to understand the importance and value of their learning experiences. MAKE YOUR WEEKENDS FAMILY FRIENDLY How many times do you find yourself saying on a Sunday night – well the weekend is over again and we still haven’t done what we planned! Routine, Routine, Routine A word that harbours dread in many but one that can make your life so much easier! If you have your week day routines organised well this will not only free you up at the weekend but also help create simple weekend routines. Plan some of those larger chores for during the week to free up weekend time. Instead of washing everything on a Saturday morning why not do the bulk on a Tuesday or Wednesday leaving Friday evening or early Saturday to just wash school uniforms and work outfits. If you are planning a party or friends round at the weekend, don’t leave the shopping until Saturday morning and spend the day cooking. Shop on Thursday and pre- prepare some of the dishes. Get the kids to help For those jobs that do need doing at the weekend have a roster and get the kids to help. Not only is this good for their development and discipline but can help them appreciate the fun family time, plus it can be good family time in itself. Chat about the day and week while folding the washing with Mum or pulling up weeds with Dad! Make sure you allocate jobs appropriate to their age and ability. Weekend Activities If your kids are involved in weekend soccer, cricket or other activities try to streamline these. Car pool with other parents. Don’t build up your children’s expectations that you will watch every single soccer match or ballet class. It won’t mean you love them any less! Plan Your Time Once you have done all the “necessary” weekend tasks and trips make sure you actually plan something together so the rest of the weekend doesn’t fritter away. Acne is a skin condition that occurs when the oil-secreting glands in the skin are clogged and become inflamed or infected. If you are a teen chances are you will have some acne with acne being considered by most as a normal part of development between a kid and an adult. Acne can be in the form of whiteheads (when a pore gets clogged up, closes, and bulges out from the skin) or blackheads (when a pore clogs up but stays open). Pimples are caused when the wall of the pore is broken and bacteria and dead skin cells get under the skin. Kids and teens get acne because of the hormone changes in puberty. Luckily for most acne clears by the time you reach your twenties. Use your hands to wash not a facecloth  Keep hair sprays and gels away from your face as they can clog pores  If you have long hair, keep it away from your face and wash it regularly to reduce oil  Try not to touch your face  Make sure any makeup you use is oil free  Wash your face after exercise or if you have been sweating a lot  Don't pick, squeeze, or pop pimples  Try not to get sunburned  Avoid extreme stress  Exercise regularly  Don’t rest your face in your hands while studying, reading or watching TV  Eat a good balanced diet.
