3. Presence & Coverage
• SPWD is Promoting SRI since 2005 with SDTT
Support
• Initiated in two tribal village of Orissa
(Mayurbhanj district) in 2005
• Expanded its presence from 2008 in
Jharkhand & West Bengal
• Coverage has increased from 1600 to 34000
farmers (area from 641 acres to 12000 acres)

6. Status of 2011
• Satisfactory rainfall
• Group nursery is common feature in several
places
• 34000 farmers and 12000 acres
• Production range ( 4.5 to 6 ton /ha)
• Farmers have practiced green manuring
• Traditional seeds were used in few pockets
• Seed preservation is being practiced in large

7. Strategies adopted in 2011
• Farmers' training also had coping mechanisms incorporated alongwith
training on SRI
• Combined seed treatment and nursery raising
• More focus on farmers own seed, certified seeds
• Preparation for 2nd and 3rd stage nurseries
• Availability of seeds were ensured for 2nd and 3rd stage of nurseries
• Repeat farmers was kept in loop to expand the area and to use as a
resource person for others
• Farmers’ exposures in Rabi season SRI & SWI has helped
• Government’s NFSM & ATMA run FS & FFS was used in few locations
which is beneficial
• Aromatic rice verity was taken up to increase the farmers’ income
• Progressive farmers meets were held to appreciate and expand
through discussions on achievements and problems

8. Policy Initiatives
• Regularly invited by State government in SRI promotion policy
framing
• Empanelled SPWD and partners throughout the state for promotion
of SRI.
• Farmers School and Farmers’ Field Schools were given in Ranchi
district exclusively on SRI principals promotion for the crops like
paddy, wheat and pulses
• State Agriculture policy is in draft stage which talks about SRI as a tool
for increase in food production.
• Incentives announced by GoJ for farmers done SRI lists were
submitted to respective district agriculture department
• The farmers list for SWI practices is also being demanded by DAO as
they know want to provide incentive to SRI principals in other crop
• Incorporated small irrigation structures like dobha, wells for paddy
and other crops irrigation is incorporated in State agriculture policy

10. Convergence
• Resource agency for 18 SRI partners of NABARD
• NFSM and ATMA programmes to promote SRI was
successfully mobilised
• GoJ has initiated a programme to extend SRI to 1.6 lakh Ha in
2011 kharif.
• SPWD has successfully inbuilt SRI as an important component
promoted the UNDP supported project ‘Biodiversity
Conservation and livelihood promotion through Community
based Natural resource management programme’ which is
reaching around 25000 HH in 50 villages of ecofrazile regions
of the state. As SPWD is one of the project partner so this
partners forum is used successfully to promote SRI and its
principals in others crops among project beneficiaries.
