Project Title
 Revival of Ahar-Pyne : Traditional Water
Management System in Palamu District of
  Jharkhand.
Target Groups
 Dalit
 Tribes
 Marginal farmers
 CBOs
Coverage Area
 State : Jharkhand
 District : Palamu
 Block : Paton
 Village : Angra
Project Objective
 Systematically revive the traditional Ahar-Pyne
system in Angra village of Palamu district
  supplemented with improved agriculture practices
to ensure livelihood sustainability of the tribal
  community.
Historical Background of DBI
 Scarcity of Irrigation Structures.
 Diminishing Traditional Ahar-Pyne System
 Mismanagement of land and water.
 Higher input cost of agriculture.
 Scarcity of Agriculture based technical
  knowledge among farmers.
 Food insecurity.
 Huge Seasonal Migration
 Unavailability of Govt. Schemes.
Historical Background of DBI
 The village is dominated by Scheduled Tribes
mostly Oraon (69.9%) and Schedule Castes
  (30%).
 They are considered to be the most marginal
  section of the society.
 The current level of food security was for about six
months and hence the distress migration was very
  high from the village.
 The village is rich in network of Ahars and Pynes
which was in a stage of decay.
Historical Background of DBI

     Agriculture and Livelihood
 Rainfed agriculture.
 Drought Prone Area
 Major source of irrigation is AharPyne system.
 Barka Ahar irrigated around 150 acres of land
  even then.
 Major Kharif crops are paddy and maize.
 Average production of paddy was 6.75 q./acre and
  maize 2.40 q./acre.
 Apart from paddy and maize, other crops grown
are wheat, barley and Pigeon pea but production
  was very low.
Historical Background of DBI
      Demographics and Resource
               Details
 Angra is one of the revenue villages of Patan
  Block.
 Towards the north, it is surrounded by mountain
range known as Angra Mountain, in the west it is
surrounded by Kararkalan, in the east by Jagodih
and in the south by Aaredana villages
  respectively.
 Angra is Khasmahal village which means that
there was no Zamindari system prevalent in this
village. It was directly under the control of British
  Government during their regime.
Historical Background of DBI

 It is endowed by rich forest resources with trees
like Shorea robusta (Sal), Madhuca indica
(Mahua), Butea monosperma (Palash), etc. as
dominant tree species. But these resources are
dwindling slowly due to various reasons.
 Total households in the village are 199.
  Total population is 1143
 This village is dominated by Scheduled Tribes
Mostly the Oraon-- 69.9% followed by Scheduled
   Caste- 30% .
 This village comes under one of the backward
   villages of the region.
 The literacy rate in the village is around 21%
 The remoteness of the location has resulted in
very limited developmental work being carried out
   in the area.
Historical Background of DBI

                Land Resources
                         Land Type Area in acre
                 Total geographical area 732

Innovations
 Pipe line from Nawlakha checkdam was
deviated to reduce the cost of trench
  digging.
 Fish farming was adopted in Lalmatia ahar
and Barka ahar resulting earning of
  Rs.75000/- by 38 beneficiaries during 2011.
Difficulties Faced
 Local Naxalite groups demanded for levy
  which delayed completion of physical
activity. Process followed to overcome the
difficulty- we along with the villagers
contacted them and convinced towards our
  objectives.
 Farmers had no faith on new technology
  like- SRI,SWI,
Scope for Diversion Based Irrigation

 Undulating Topography and traditional
natural structure like Ahar-Pyne abundant in
locality which can be renovated as they
  have been dead.
Suggestion for better implementation

 Linkage with Government schemes,
  MNREGA.
 Awareness generation among villagers
  regarding importance of traditional system.
